Grade 1 Winner Doppelganger Retired To Florida’s Pleasant Acres Stallions For 2024

Pleasant Acres Stallions is pleased to announce the arrival of Doppelganger (Into Mischief / Twice the Lady, by Quiet American) – who will stand in Florida in 2024 for $10,000.

“A TDN Rising Star by Into Mischief has arrived in Florida for our breeders,” said Pleasant Acres Stallions owner Joe Barbazon. “Bred on the same crossover Fappiano-line mares as Champion and mutiple Grade 1 winner Covfefe and graded stakes winner Maximus Mischief, we are confident he will make an impressive impact on future Florida crops.”

Doppelganger – a $570,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Showcase yearling – broke his maiden in his debut at two with a performance that awarded him the coveted title of TDN Rising Star for his 3 ½ length score at the Los Alamitos Thoroughbred meet. He became Into Mischief's 29th Rising Star, joining an elite group of talent including Life Is Good ($85,000 stud fee), Mandaloun ($20,000 fee), and Goldencents.

“When we saw him at the sale the whole team, Bob, Tom, and myself, agreed he was an absolute must have,” said Donato Lanni. “I am looking forward to seeing his babies hit the sales in a couple of years.”

At three he ran at Santa Anita and placed in the G2 San Felipe Stakes and G3 Affirmed Stakes. With four wins at four, Doppelganger captured the G1 Carter Handicap Presented by NYRA Bets at Aqueduct as well as the Battery Park Stakes at Delaware Park.

Doppelganger's sire, Into Mischief – a four-time reigning champion general sire – stands for $250,000 at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky. He has $162,647,320 in progeny earnings with $149,795 average earnings per runner. He's had 140 (11.4 percent) black type winners and 259 (21 percent) black type placed runners. Currently he has 68 graded stakes winners and 18 Grade 1 winners. Continuing to break his own records, Into Mischief averaged nearly $600,000 for weanlings and close to $700,000 for yearlings in the sales ring in 2023 – a substantial increase from the prior year.

Doppelganger is out of the Quiet American mare Twice the Lady – a stakes winner and multiple stakes placed performer who was nearly 70 percent in the money.

His second dam, Catherine's Crown (Chief's Crown) is the dam of Michelle's Crown – the producer of Louisiana Champions Day Turf Stakes and Louisiana Showcase Turf Stakes winner Snakebite Kit. Catherine's Crown is the granddam of stakes winner Savingtime. Doppelganger's third dam – Catherine's Bet – was a Grade 2 winner and the dam of champion 3-year-old filly Blushing Katy and Midnight Bet – a multiple stakes winner of nearly $3 million in Japan.

Doppelganger joins stallions Amira's Prince (Teofilo), Bodexpress (Bodemeister), Chess Chief (Into Mischief), Curlin's Honor (Curlin), Gone Astray (Dixie Union), Gunnevera (Dialed In), Leinster (Majestic Warrior), Magic on Tap (Tapit), Neolithic (Harlan's Holiday), No Never No More (Scat Daddy), and Sweetontheladies (Twirling Candy), at the 220-acre farm located just northwest of Ocala.

Pleasant Acres Stallions has received many accolades for excellence, including 2021 Florida Freshman Sire of the Year for Neolithic, 2017 Florida Freshman Sire of the Year for Poseidon's Warrior, 2017 DRF Florida-bred Beyer Award, 2009 Florida Breeder of the Year, 2009 Florida Broodmare of the Year, Breeder of the 2009 Florida Horse of the Year, and was ranked third in the nation for leading breeders in 2009 by average earnings per starter with 10 or more starters.

Breeding Plans Topic Of Final 2023 Thoroughbred Owner Conference Panel

The 10th and final panel of the 2023 OwnerView Virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference was held Tuesday, Dec. 5, and covered breeding plans. Panelists were Carrie Brogden, owner of Machmer Hall Farm; Alan Porter, founder of TrueNicks; and Mark Toothaker, director of stallions at Spendthrift Farm. The panel was hosted by OwnerView's project manager, Gary Falter.

The conference is hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and sponsored by Bessemer Trust, Stoll Keenon Ogden, and The Green Group. This panel was sponsored by New York Thoroughbred Breeders.

Attendees were able to ask questions through Zoom's Q&A feature, sponsored by West Point Thoroughbreds.

The start of the conference showed a video of the OwnerView New Owner of the Year award recipients, Jim and Dana Bernhard and Alexander Bregman. The award is sponsored by 1/ST Racing.

Topics for the breeding panel included matings, nicking, conformation traits, inbreeding, broodmare preferences, and stallion selection.

The first question to the panelists referred to the saying, “breed the best to the best and hope for the best.” Toothaker replied, “I can't afford beautiful and pedigree, so I'm always going to lean more on the pretty side on my mares, and they may be just a little bit lacking on pedigree. Buy the prettiest mare that you can afford.”

Brogden considers conformation to be extremely important when making breeding decisions. “It is the most important thing,” she said. “After years and years and years of being on the farm now, we started to see a trend where every single graded stakes winner off our farm, on the dirt, every single one was in the top 30 percent of physicals of our yearling crop.”

In a discussion about inbreeding, Porter said, “Historically, too much close inbreeding is a negative. We got some statistics on this when we were upgrading TrueNicks. The grade 1 winners had a slightly higher than average inbreeding coefficient, but they existed within a narrower range.”

A replay of the panel and all previous panels can be viewed at bit.ly/OVVideosThe Thoroughbred Owner Conference virtual panels will continue in 2024. A full schedule will be available at bit.ly/OVSchedule in early 2024.

There is no registration fee for the virtual conference series, but registration is required. For more information about the owner conference, please visit ownerview.com/event/conference or contact Gary Falter at 859.224.2803 or gfalter@jockeyclub.com.

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

Bloodlines Presented By Walmac Farm: Dornoch Already Living Up To Fast-Growing Pedigree

Who's knocking at the door?

It's a bay colt. He's here with his agent, Conor Foley, and personal trainer, Danny Gargan, and the colt says that you're supposed to interview them.

Is that Dornoch?

Yes, Dornoch has knocked. The door has been answered. He says the password is “Remsen.”

Victory in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes on Dec. 2 has opened a lot of doors for Dornoch, as well as his connections.

Co-owner Larry Conley, founder of West Paces Racing, said that “getting this colt [before everyone knew the quality of his full brother Mage] is really down to Conor and his team at Oracle Bloodstock. They put us in the right spot to succeed.”

As part-explanation of the reason for their interest in the colt, Foley said, “We have been associated with this family for several years. I was involved in the selection of Puca as a yearling [at Keeneland September in 2013], and she became a stakes winner while racing for Donegal Stable.”

When the mare's first colt, a foal of 2020 by the champion juvenile Good Magic (by Curlin) came to the sales, Foley and his team at Oracle Bloodstock inspected and strongly approved of the result. Foley said, “We vetted Mage and tried to buy him, but the owners who did [at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale] have been tremendous for racing this year.”

Only four months later, however, “I saw the full brother,” Foley said, “and he was such a different horse. He's more like the dam, a little bigger and rangier. The day he sold, Danny and I went to the sale with this one in mind, and I remember jogging to the ring to be ready for this colt.”

Dornoch's trainer noted: “He's a powerful horse with a world of athleticism; the impressive thing is how strongly he finishes his works and how well he gallops out past his work distance.”

A winner of the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct by the minimum margin wouldn't typically be earning such raves for his accomplishment, but Dornoch made an impression with his effort to win the Remsen. Holding the lead nicely as he turned into the stretch, Dornoch flirted with the rail and allowed Sierra Leone to make a fetching run on the outside to take the lead and appear to be on his way to victory.

Not so. Dornoch switched back to business and made steady progress against his rival to win narrowly on the wire. The top two separated themselves from the third-place colt, Drum Roll Please (Hard Spun), by 4 ¾ lengths.

Bred in Kentucky by Grandview Equine, Dornoch is out of the Big Brown mare Puca, who went through the Keeneland November sale last month. She passed through the ring unsold at $2.8 million, then John Stewart bought her shortly thereafter for $2.9 million in foal to Good Magic (Curlin).

Champion juvenile Good Magic is also the sire of Dornoch and his full brother, 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage. The Derby winner has been retired to stud for 2024 and will stand at Airdrie Stud for a fee of $25,000. Their sire stands at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa for a stud fee of $125,000 live foal, if you can secure a season.

As a first-crop yearling, Mage sold to New Team for $235,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale, then resold to OGMA Investments as a 2-year-old at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale for $290,000. Racing for CMNWLTH, OGMA, Sterling Racing, and Ramiro Restrepo, the chestnut colt won two of his seven starts, finished second in the G1 Florida Derby and Haskell, third in the G1 Preakness, and earned $2.5 million.

The year-younger Dornoch sold for $325,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September sale to Oracle Bloodstock, agent, and races for West Paces Racing LLC, R. A. Hill Stable, Belmar Racing and Breeding LLC, Two Eight Racing LLC, and Pine Racing Stables.

Now a winner in two of four starts, Dornoch earned his first black type with a second-place finish in his second start, the Sapling Stakes, then won a maiden special at Keeneland. To win his maiden, Dornoch led at every call and pulled away to win by 6 ½ lengths as the odds-on favorite in the mile and a sixteenth race. To win the Remsen, favored Dornoch led at every pole up to the stretch call, when Sierra Leone was in front, then again when it mattered most.

Conley said, “What a heart, what a competitive spirit. You can't train that, can't buy that.

“For all of us involved with this colt, every week is going to be like Christmas week for the next few months; right now, he's getting some rest, then getting ready for the New Year.”
