Tale Of Verve, Greenpointcrusader, White Flag To Stand In Uruguay In 2023

A trio of North American-born stallions will stand the 2023 Southern Hemisphere breeding season in Uruguay.

Tale of Verve, a classic-placed son of Tale of Ekati, was sold to stand at Haras La Concordia, BloodHorse reports.

The 11-year-old previously stood at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky., where he entered stud in 2019. His first foals are 3-year-olds of 2023, led by stakes-placed six-figure earner Accident, who finished third in last year's Global Tote Juvenile Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs.

A homebred for Charles Fipke, Tale of Verve won two of 20 starts and earned $500,245. He parlayed a two-length maiden-breaking score at Keeneland in April of his 3-year-old season into a runner-up finish behind eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Preakness Stakes.

Tale of Verve is out of the placed Unbridled mare Verve, and he is a full-brother to Grade 3 winner Verve's Tale. Grade 1 winners Zoftig, Zaftig, and Zo Impressive can be found in his extended family.

Greenpointcrusader, a Grade 1-winning son of Bernardini, was acquired by Haras Marnu, with his place of residence still to be determined, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

Bloodstock agent Carlos Moore brokered the transaction for the 10-year-old horse, who previously stood at Ocala Stud in Florida since debuting at stud in 2018. From three crops of racing age, Greenpointcrusader has sired 23 winners with earnings of more than $1.5 million, led by stakes-winner Mia's Crusade and stakes-placed The Green Crusader.

Greenpointcrusader won three of nine starts and earned $473,300 on the racetrack, highlighted by a 4 1/2-length victory in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park during his 2-year-old season. At three, he finished second in the G2 Holy Bull Stakes.

Greenpointcrusader is out of the Grade 3-placed Cryptoclearance mare Ava Knowsthecode, whose other foals of note include Grade 1 winner Justin Phillip, Grade 2 winner Keyed Entry, and Grade 3 winner Successful Mission. He is also a full-brother to Grade 3 winner Algorithms, who also stands in Uruguay.

Rounding out the trio is White Flag, a multiple graded-placed stakes-winning son of War Front who will stand at Haras Los Robles, Turf Diario reports.

The 9-year-old retired with six wins in 26 starts racing as a homebred for Robert S. Evans, earning $534,278. The turf sprint specialist won the Allied Forces Stakes at Belmont Park as a 2-year-old, then he took the Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship Stakes at three. His graded placings include a third in the G1 Highlander Stakes at Woodbine.

Out of the unraced Gone West mare Shared Hope, White Flag's second dam is the Grade 1 winner Shared Interest, putting him in the same family as Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Cash Run, Grade 1 winner Forestry, and 2012 Saudi Arabian Horse of the Year Step In Time.

Malleymoo, Free Look Top Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses Of Racing Age Sale

A pair of 3-year-old fillies dead heated for the top spot at the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age sale Monday at the Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky. The sale's 11th annual renewal established new records for gross and median.

Malleymoo (Hip 444) was the first to reach the sale topping price of $550,000 when purchased by Steven W. Young, agent, from the consignment of Gainesway, agent (video). Malleymoo was a winner on debut at two in Ireland last year and annexed this year's Penn Oaks at Penn National on June 2. To date, the dark bay or brown filly has a record of two wins and one second from six starts and career earnings of $127,381. Malleymoo hails from the immediate family of two-time European champion New Approach.

Free Look (Hip 596) matched the top price of $550,000 when purchased by Chad Schumer, agent for Blue Diamond Stud, from the consignment of ELiTE, agent (video). Free Look was a winner last year at two at Saratoga and was subsequently just three-quarters of a length second in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont at the Big A. To date, she has a record of one win, one second, and two thirds from six starts and career earnings of $159,250. Free Look is out of a full sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Violence, from the immediate family of champion filly Sky Beauty.

“It was a terrific afternoon and early evening of horse sales today,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The horses of racing age marketplace was just dynamite. Three horses brought $500,000 or more… not only that, we had a lot of horses that got sold with modest reserves that were bringing significantly more than the reserves.”

Rounding out the top five prices of the day were:

– Crypto Mo (Hip 645), a 3-year-old filly by Mohaymen purchased for $500,000 by Hunter Valley from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent (video). Crypto Mo won the G3 Iowa Oaks in gate-to-wire fashion on July 9 at Prairie Meadows. The Oaks was her third consecutive victory at that track since May 28, when she won an allowance by nearly 18 lengths, after which she captured the Panthers Stakes on June 10. To date, Crypto Mo has won four times and finished third once in eight starts with career earnings of $210,870.

– Redifined (Hip 481), a 3-year-old daughter of More Than Ready purchased for $450,000 by Perry Harrison from the consignment of Lane's End Farm, agent. Redifined was a winner on debut at Belmont last year and won her most recent start in allowance company at that track on June 3. In addition, the bay filly was three time stakes placed at two, including a neck second in the G3 Matron Stakes at Belmont at the Big A in just her third start. To date, Redifined has a record of two wins, two seconds, and a third from six starts and career earnings of $173,990.

– Catiche (Hip 551), a 4-year-old filly by Arrogate purchased for $445,000 by Scott Mawaka from the consignment of ELiTE, agent. Catiche was twice a winner last year at three, including a six-length maiden victory at Gulfstream Park, and was just three-quarters of a length second in the G3 Selene Stakes at Woodbine. To date, the bay filly has a record of two wins, five seconds, and a third in 10 starts and career earnings of $163,629. Out of graded stakes winning Sacristy, Catiche is a half-sister to Grade 1 placed stakes winner Flor de la Mar from the immediate family of Japanese Grade 1 winner Mozu Superflare and Australian Group 1 winner Qafila.

“It was a great start to the July sales,” added Browning. “I am very, very pleased. Once again, it's a tribute to the people who bring the quality horses to us and give us an opportunity to sell (them). It sure worked well today.”

Overall, 142 horses sold for $13,982,000, exceeding by 29.3 percent the previous record gross set last year when 129 horses sold for $10,814,000. The average was $98,465, up 17.5 percent over last year's average of $83,829 and second only to the inaugural sale highwater mark of $105,800 set in 2013. The median rose 7.8 percent to a sale record $62,500 from the previous record of $58,000 set last year. Forty-eight horses sold for $100,000 or more, up from 34 at or above that price point in 2022, while the number of horses sold for $250,000 or more rose to 12 from nine last year. The RNA rate was just 16.5 percent.

Dreamfyre Gives Darby Dan Farm’s Flameaway First Stakes Winner

In an impressive career debut, Danny Eplin's Dreamfyre made short work of her rivals in winning the $75,000 Everett Nevin Stakes at the Alameda County fair meet in Pleasanton, Calif., on July 9, to become the first stakes winner and fourth winner, overall, for Darby Dan Farm's Flameaway, currently the No. 3-ranked First-Crop Sire.

Trained by O.J. Jauregui, Dreamfyre took command of the 5 ½-furlong event at the break and set a fast pace to the far turn, rattling off an opening quarter in an eye-catching :21.77 and a half in :44.27. Under jockey Francisco Duran, she shook free at the head of the lane and drew clear in the stretch to score by a dominating 3 ½ lengths, stopping the clock in 1:04.51.

Bred in Kentucky by John Oxley, Dreamfyre was acquired by Eplin for $140,000 out of the SGV Thoroughbreds consignment at this year's OBS Spring Sale where the dark bay or brown filly breezed an eighth in :09 4/5 at the sale's under tack preview. Darby Dan Farm sold Dreamfyre originally as a yearling at the 2022 Keeneland September Sale where she was purchased by Lehigh for $130,000. Dreamfyre is produced from the graded stakes-placed Sky Mesa mare Appreciating and is a half-sister to Grade 1-placed Nasreddine.

Flameaway's first 2-year-olds at auction have lit up the board this year and they include a filly that sold to Justin Casse, agent, for $370,000, the highest-priced horse by a freshman sire at the OBS June Sale and the highest-priced filly of the sale overall. All told, he has had 36 2-year-olds in training sell from 42 offered for total sales of $2,330,000, good for an average of $64,722.

First-Crop Sire Watch: 2023 Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale

Following is a list of stallions whose first crops of yearlings are represented in the upcoming Fasig-Tipton July Yearling Sale, including the number of horses cataloged and the farm where the stallion is currently advertised.

Offerings from the debut crop of a stallion are often met with a commercial premium from buyers at auction. A stallion's stud fee is often at its highest during their first season, increasing the initial investment, and the natural intrigue of a blue-sky prospect often put a unique spotlight on the rookie sires at any given sale.

Here are the opportunities to get in on the ground floor with a first-year stallion at this year's Fasig-Tipton July Sale.
