Sale Voided On Seven-Figure Speightster Colt At OBS Spring Auction

One of the highlights of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale was undone when buyer Larry Best of OXO Equine turned back the purchase of a $1.1-million Speightster colt, BloodHorse reports.

The purchase was voided under the Conditions of Sale after staff at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky., found the colt to be a cribber; a condition that was not announced at the time he was in the ring. Video was taken of the horse cribbing, and sent to the OBS staff, with Best formally announcing his intention to return the horse shortly before the end of the seven-day window to do so.

Tom McCrocklin consigned the colt as agent for Solana Beach Sales, the pinhooking wing of the Little Red Feather Racing partnership. The colt will be sent to trainer Bob Baffert to begin his racetrack career. McCrocklin told BloodHorse that the colt had showed no signs of cribbing prior to the sale, thus an announcement was not warranted, but the sellers were happy to retain the horse to race.

Named Fortunate Son, the New York-bred colt is out of the stakes-placed Indian Charlie mare Auspicious, who is the dam of three winners from four foals to race. He sold for $110,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale.

First Winner For Brody’s Cause Comes At Woodbine

Spendthrift Farm stallion Brody's Cause registered his first winner at stud on June 28 when Gospel Way bested a maiden special weight field at Woodbine, BloodHorse reports.

Gospel Way chased the two leaders through the opening part of the five-furlong race, then was angled out by jockey Emile Ramsammy in the stretch, where they gained the advantage as the finish approached to win by 1 1/4 lengths. The gelding stopped the clock in :58.37 seconds over Woodbine's all-weather Tapeta surface.

Trained by Nathan Squires, Gospel Way was bred in Virginia and races as a homebred for William Thompson Jr. He is out of the winning Pulpit mare Bible Belt.

Brody's Cause a 7-year-old son of Giant's Causeway, stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $7,500.

He won three of eight starts during his on-track career, highlighted by a sweep of the marquee races for colts, taking the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at two during the fall meet, then coming back during the spring meet to win the G1 Blue Grass Stakes. Brody's Cause also finished third in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, which was also held at Keeneland.

Brody's Cause is out of the multiple stakes-placed Sahm mare Sweet Breanna, making him a half-brother to stakes-placed Midnight Sweetie. His extended family includes Grade 1 winner Cure the Blues and Grade/Group 3 winners Went the Day Well, Evangelical, and Duke of Venice.

Mirth Named 2019 Pennsylvania-Bred Horse Of The Year

This year's Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association Iroquois Awards was held on Friday, June 26 via Zoom. The event virtually hosted top Pennsylvania breeders from all over in celebration of the 2019 stakes winners and champions.

Following is the complete list of winners from Friday's ceremony.

Horse of the Year, Older Female, Turf Female – Mirth

Bred by Barlar LLC

Mirth didn't make her stakes debut until June of her 4-year-old season in her 13th career start. Three months later, she was a Grade 1 winner. She won Santa Anita's Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at 1 1/4 miles while leading at every call in 1:58.47, wrapped up the year with a score in the G3 Robert J. Frankel Stakes, and in between, set the pace in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf before giving way late to be beaten less than six lengths. She won or placed in seven of 11 starts for the year and earned $347,281.

2-Year-Old Filly – Weed Wacker

A winner first time out, a stakes winner in her second start and outfinishing all but Pennsylvania-bred champion juvenile colt Newstome in her third start, Weed Wacker dominated her own division. She won the Mrs. Henry D. Paxson Memorial Stakes at Presque Isle Downs by 3 1/4 lengths after a 2 3/4-length maiden win.

2-Year-Old Colt – Newstome

A stakes winner at Presque Isle Downs in the Mark McDermott by three lengths, and at Laurel Park in the James F. Lewis III against open company, Newstome had three wins from five starts for the year and concluded his season with a third-place finish in the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes.

3-Year-Old Filly – Gotta Be Strong

A busy season saw the bay filly win or place in 11 of 14 starts. Tops among her five wins was Penn National's New Start Stakes in which she rallied from last to win in the final strides. She also finished third in the Alma North Stakes at Laurel Park.

3-Year-Old Colt – Parsimony

Starting at least once a month through November in 2019, Parsimony made starts at Santa Anita, Oaklawn Park, Keeneland, Los Alamitos and Del Mar. Four times he was sent out in graded stakes, and finished second to champion Game Winner in the G3 Los Alamitos Derby. He was also second in the Cinema Stakes and finished in the top three in nine of his 16 starts at three.

Older Male – Prince Lucky

Bred by Daniel W. McConnell Sr.

The richest Pennsylvania-bred runner of 2019, Prince Lucky kicked off his 4-year-old season with dominating back-to-back stakes scores in the G3 Hal's Hope, winning by six lengths, followed by the G2 Gulfstream Park Mile by nearly five lengths. Racing exclusively in stakes, he added a win in the State Dinner Stakes at Belmont in July and turned in a game performance to just miss when second in the G2 Kelso Handicap.

Turf Male – Pumpkin Rumble

Making his first start of the season in late June, the veteran Pumpkin Rumble made five starts, four in graded stakes company, and won twice – defending his title in Woodbine's G3 Valedictory Stakes by more than five lengths, and taking his only start away from his base in Canada in Parx Racing's Alphabet Soup Handicap. He also finished third in the G2 Nijinsky and G3 Dominion Day Stakes.

Female Sprinter – Bronx Beauty

Six starts, all stakes. Three wins at three different tracks. Bronx Beauty flew home in the Penn Ladies Dash at Penn National in 1:08.57 for six furlongs; battled home to win the Dashing Beauty at Delaware Park; and proved tough when taking Monmouth Park's Regret. She was also third in the Roamin Rachel at Parx.

Male Sprinter – Midtowncharlybrown

Bred by Godric LLC

A two-time stakes winner in the tough sprint division, Midtowncharlybrown shot to the lead and flew home in the Chocolate Town Sprint at Penn National, and followed with a gutsy performance in the Banjo Picker Sprint at Parx Racing while turning back multiple challengers.

Steeplechaser – Senior Senator

Bred by Charles C.D. McGill

The timber star made history by winning the Maryland Hunt Cup for a third time, the first horse to do so in 36 years, and also accounted for his third consecutive Grand National Timber Stakes.

Wicked Strong Colt Leads Third Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Under Tack Session

The third and final session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale's under tack show was highlighted on Friday by a Wicked Strong colt who covered a quarter-mile in :21 1/5 seconds.

The chestnut colt, offered as Hip 512, is the second foal out of the winning E Dubai mare E Classic, whose first foal is the stakes-placed E Rated. Champion sprinter Housebuster is in the colt's extended family, along with Grade 2 winners Something Extra and Nicole H. Wavertree Stables consigns the colt, as agent.

Five horses tied for the co-fastest time at an eighth of a mile on Friday, each breezing in :10 flat:

Hip 389, a Twirling Candy filly out of the placed More Than Ready mare Apple Cider, whose two foals to race are both winners. Grade 2 winners Hangover Kid and Who Did It And Run are in the family of this Maryland-bred, who is offered as property of Grassroots Training and Sales.
Hip 400, a Maclean's Music filly out of the placed Afternoon Deelites mare Ava G, whose four foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner Miss My Rose. Grade 2 winner Minstrel Miss is the fourth dam of this filly, who is consigned by Scanlon Training and Sales, agent.
Hip 505, a Pennsylvania-bred Fed Biz filly out of the unraced Awesome Again mare Dream Realized, who is the dam of four winners from six runners. Crane Thoroughbred Services consigns the filly, as agent.
Hip 518, a first-crop Frosted filly out of the stakes-placed Bluegrass Cat mare Enchante, whose first foal to race is a winner. SBM Training and Sales, agent, handles the filly, whose page includes champion Forty Niner.
Hip 552, a Dialed In filly out of the winning Menifee mare Fall Fantasy, who is the dam of eight runners and six winners.
