Keeneland’s 2020 September Yearling Sale Opens Sunday

Keeneland will kick off its 77th annual September Yearling Sale on Sunday, Sept. 13 at noon with the first of 12 sessions of the internationally important sale of Thoroughbred racing prospects, which will be conducted amid COVID-19 protocols that are designed to create the safest environment possible.

For those unable to attend the sale, Keeneland will offer online bidding and expanded phone bidding capabilities. The digital September Sale catalog also has been enhanced to deliver more information, such as walking videos of yearlings and comments from consignors, directly to customers.

“The September Sale is incredibly vital to our industry as a key annual marketplace for Thoroughbred breeders and sellers, a proven source of top-quality racing prospects for buyers from around the world and an invaluable economic driver for Central Kentucky,” Keeneland president-elect and interim head of sales Shannon Arvin said. “Though COVID-19 presents a unique set of operational challenges for everyone, we are confident that the protocols we have put in place will provide a stable marketplace and promote safety across the sales grounds. We thank everyone for their cooperation and their tremendous effort to make this sale happen.”

The September Sale produces horses that win at racing's highest level around the world. Through Labor Day, September Sale graduates had won 261 stakes, including 36 Grade/Group 1 events across North America as well as in Great Britain, Japan and Australia. Leading the graded stakes winners over the Labor Day weekend were Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Authentic and Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Shedaresthedevil.

Other September Sale graduates alumni who won Grade 1 races during the past weekend were Global Campaign (Woodward), Jackie's Warrior (Runhappy Hopeful), champion Monomoy Girl (La Troienne Presented by Oak Grove Gaming and Racing, Princess Noor (Del Mar Debutante) and Vequist (Spinaway).

Coverage of the September Sale begins Saturday, Sept. 12 at 9 a.m. when TVG2 will air “Rising Stock,” an hourlong preview show hosted by Christina Blacker, Gabby Gaudet and Scott Hazelton.

TVG2 will have live coverage of the first four days of the auction: noon to 7 p.m. on Sept. 13-14 and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 16-17.

2020 September Sale schedule

A total of 4,272 yearlings are cataloged in this year's September Sale, which will cover a total of 12 sessions:

Book 1 – Sunday-Monday, Sept. 13-14. Sessions begin at noon. A total of 448 yearlings are cataloged over the two days.

Tuesday, Sept. 15 – “Dark day” with no sale.

Book 2 – Wednesday-Thursday, Sept. 16-17. Sessions begin at 10 a.m. with a total of 770 horses in the two-day catalog.

Books 3-6 – Friday-Friday, Sept. 18-25. Sessions begin at 10 a.m. A total of 3,054 yearlings are cataloged for these sessions over the final eight days of the sale.

Yearlings represent such leading sires as American Pharoah, Bernardini, Candy Ride (ARG), Constitution, Curlin, Dark Angel (IRE), Distorted Humor, Empire Maker, Frankel (GB), Frosted, Galileo (IRE), Ghostzapper, Hard Spun, Honor Code, Into Mischief, Kingman (GB), Kitten's Joy, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d'Oro, More Than Ready, Munnings, No Nay Never, Nyquist, Pioneerof the Nile, Quality Road, Speightstown, Street Sense, Tapit, Uncle Mo, Union Rags, Violence and War Front.

Stallions with their first crop of yearlings in the catalog include Arrogate, Battle of Midway, Caravaggio, Churchill (IRE), Classic Empire, Cupid, Gun Runner, Keen Ice, Mastery and Practical Joke.

Credentials required at Keeneland during the September Sale

All September Sale participants who attend the auction must request a credential through Virtual Badge in order to access the sales grounds through Sept. 25. (Click here for more information.)

This year's September Sale is closed to the public.

Proof of a negative COVID-19 test is required for all Keeneland employees, consignors and their staffs, veterinarians and their staffs, farriers, van representatives and media.

Buyers, owners and agents are not required to be tested, but they must submit a health questionnaire prior to the September Sale. Testing will be available if requested.

Everyone entering the Keeneland grounds will undergo a daily health screening with a temperature check and questions.

Face coverings must be worn both inside and outdoors, and social distancing of at least six feet is required. There will be reduced capacity in the Sales Pavilion, including the Sales Arena and Back Holding Ring. Social distancing when inspecting yearlings will be observed, and buyers, owners and agents are not permitted to enter the barns.

A Directory of Bloodstock Agents who plan to be at Keeneland and can inspect a yearling.
Expanded bidding opportunities include phone bidding and online bidding.
An additional location for on-site bidders is at the Back Show Ring.

The Sales Pavilion will operate at reduced capacity to allow for social distancing.
Keeneland Hospitality will offer a variety of culinary options throughout the grounds ranging from seated meals to grab-and-go snacks. Venues include First Floor Grandstand lunch service featuring elevated concession menus, Terrace Grill (weather permitting), Phoenix Room and Track Kitchen. The Limestone Café will not offer food for the September Sale due to social distancing limitations.
Patrons may self-park in any spot not marked as reserved. For the health and safety of our guests and employees, valet parking will not be available.
For the convenience of our customers, golf cart shuttles are available throughout the grounds. Drivers will sanitize golf carts after each ride.

Multiple Grade 1 Winner Rushing Fall To Be Offered At Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Female turf division leader Rushing Fall, a Breeders' Cup champion and multiple Grade 1 winner, will be offered at this year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

The 5-year-old mare will be consigned by Indian Creek, agent, on behalf of the Edwards family's e Five Racing Thoroughbreds.

Trained throughout her career by four-time Eclipse champion trainer Chad Brown, Rushing Fall is a six-time Grade 1 winner of $2,553,000. She is one of just three females in the modern era to win Grade 1 races at two, three, four, and five, alongside Beholder and Lady Eli.

Since winning her career debut at Belmont in September of her 2-year-old year, Rushing Fall has competed exclusively in graded stakes company, amassing 10 career graded stakes wins at five different tracks from coast-to-coast. Her impeccable record counts 11 wins and two seconds from 14 career starts.

At two, Rushing Fall won the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes by more than three lengths in her second career start. In her next start, she captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on her way to being named a finalist for Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly.

At three, she notched wins in the G2 Appalachian Stakes and G2 Lake Placid Stakes, followed by a gate-to-wire win in the prestigious G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

She began her 4-year-old campaign with another scintillating front-running win in the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes. She followed that win up with a victory in the prestigious G1 Just a Game Stakes in near-course record time.

This year, at five, Rushing Fall is in arguably the best form of her career. She began her 2020 campaign with another brilliant wire-to-wire victory in the G3 Beaugay Stakes, and then successfully defended her title in the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes, setting a new course record for 1 1/16 miles in 1:39.02. Most recently, she captured Saratoga's prestigious G1 Diana Stakes in near-course record time on Aug. 23.

Rushing Fall is now pointing toward a return to the Breeders' Cup, prior to the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on Sunday, Nov. 8 in Lexington, Ky.

Purchased as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale by agent Mike Ryan on behalf of the Edwards family, Rushing Fall is by leading international sire More Than Ready. He is the sire of the dams of more than 90 black-type winners worldwide.

Rushing Fall is out of the Forestry mare Autumnal, a 100-percent winner-producer. She is a half-sister to stakes winner and multiple graded stakes placed Milam, as well as stakes placed Autumn Song. Rushing Fall is also a half-sister to Homecoming Dance, the dam of stakes winner Empire Line, as well as Hang a Star, a graded stakes placed performer this year. Her immediate family includes G1 winners Albert the Great and Trumpet's Blare.

“Rushing Fall is one of the more brilliant turf females we have seen in some time, compiling a near perfect record in capturing her division's most prestigious and competitive races,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “She is a true collector's item, and we are honored that the Edwards Family has entrusted her sale to Fasig-Tipton.”

First Winner For Slumber Comes At Kentucky Downs

The first winner at stud for Grade 1 winner Slumber came Monday at Kentucky Downs when Fluffy Socks came through on a sustained drive to win a maiden special weight, BloodHorse reports.

Fluffy Socks kept within a couple lengths of the leader in the one-mile race, then staged a drive in Kentucky Downs' long stretch, taking command in the final sixteenth and prevailing under jockey Tyler Gaffalione. The filly stopped the clock 1:36.41 for owner Head of Plains Partners and trainer Chad Brown.

Bred in Kentucky by Head of Plains Partners, Fluffy Socks is out of the unplaced Kitten's Joy mare Breakfast Time.

Slumber, a British-born 12-year-old son of Cacique, stands at Calumet Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $5,000.

He began his racing career in England, where he became a multiple Group 3-placed stakes winner for Juddmonte Farms. He was then sent to the U.S., where his record was highlighted by a pair of in-the-money efforts in Grade 3 races, before selling for $200,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Racing under new connections for trainer Chad Brown, Slumber quickly gained prominence within the higher levels of turf racing, with his crowning achievement being a victory in the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park. He retired with five wins in 27 starts for earnings of $1,477,162.

Slumber was bred in Great Britain by Millsec Limited, out of the unraced Woodman mare Sound Asleep.

Profitable Filly Tops Relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale

The relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale witnessed increases across the board, producing a solid final set of key indicators. A total of 203 horses sold for 2,341,350 guineas (US$3,236,736) (+81%) at an average of 11,533 guineas (US$15,943) (+13%) with a median of 8,000 guineas (US$11,059) (+5%).

Lot 135, a filly by Profitable, consigned by Derek Veitch's Ringfort Stud topped the day's trade when selling to Kevin Ross for 58,000 guineas (US$80,184). The filly's page received a notable boost as her second dam Dancing Prize is the grandam of Minzaal, this year's Gimcrack Stakes winner for Owen Burrows.

Lot 225, a colt consigned by Norris Bloodstock, the first crop from Arlington Million winner Mondialiste attracted interest from a number of parties but it was Aidan O'Ryan and Richard Fahey who came out on top securing the colt for 47,000 guineas (US$64,976).

Ringfort Stud also offered Lot 143 an El Kabeir half-sister to this year's Lowther Stakes winner and Ascot Yearling Sale graduate Miss Amulet. The filly caught the imagination of a number of bidders but it was Nick Bell who struck the winning bid of 45,000 guineas (US$62,211) on behalf of his father Michael.

Joe Foley was responsible for purchasing the fourth highest priced lot of the day when signing for Lot 93, a filly offered by Houghton Bloodstock by sire sensation Night of Thunder. Houghton Bloodstock ended the day as leading consignors selling a total of nine lots for 161,000 guineas (US$222,569) at an average of 17,889 guineas (US$24,730).

Peter and Ross Doyle were the leading purchasers on the day securing a total of six lots for an aggregate of 150,000 guineas (US$207,364). Among these purchases was Lot 105, an Ardad filly consigned by Britton House Stud from the family of Sakhee's Secret.

At the conclusion of the sale, Matthew Prior, head of Tattersalls Ascot commented;

“We have witnessed robust trade throughout the day, and it is hugely pleasing to see gains made across the board. Vendors have noticeably increased the quality on offer and have been rewarded with both strong domestic and international participation. Our thanks go to Tattersalls for accommodating the relocated sale to its headquarters in Park Paddocks, along with Great British Racing International who have assisted in the promotion and airport transfers for those traveling from further afield. We look forward to charting the progress of this year's graduates from a sale that goes from strength to strength.”
