Stakes Winner Blueblood To Stand At Iowa State University In 2021

Blueblood, the fastest stakes winner to enter study duty in Iowa, will arrive this month at Iowa State University.

A lightning-fast son of leading U.S. sire City Zip, Blueblood raced five furlongs in a blazing :56 2/5 and six furlongs in 1:08 3/5. An undefeated 2-year-old stakes winner, Blueblood was also highly weighted on the Experimental Free Handicap of 2017.

“He was a very fast 2-year-old and a beautifully conformed horse,” said trainer Mark Casse.

A $300,000 sales yearling, Blueblood's athletic conformation is impeccable. At 16.1 hands, he strongly resembles his sire City Zip in overall quality.

The sire of 11 Grade 1 winners from six furlongs to 1 1/2 miles, City Zip has also sired four Eclipse Award champions. Two of those were voted champion sprinter of their year.

This year, his sons Improbable (Classic) and C Z Rocket (Sprint) top the fields for Breeders' Cup races on Nov. 6 and 7.

Iowa State University Equine Director Dr. Nikki Ferwerda stated, “Blueblood was a fast and precocious 2-year-old. Iowa breeders will be attracted to the City Zip son and the speed in his pedigree.”

Blueblood will enter stud at Iowa State University for an introductory fee of $1,500 live foal. Breeders may breed a second mare in 2021 for only $500. Best of all, a free lifetime breeding right will be awarded after three stud fees are paid.

Fasig-Tipton Announces COVID-19 Protocols For California Fall Yearling Sale

In advance of its upcoming California Fall Yearlings Sale at Los Alamitos, Fasig-Tipton has announced the following COVID-19 protocols will be in place in accordance with California regulations:

Screening measures, including temperature checks and health screening questions, will be in place to gain admittance to the sales grounds for all staff, participants and attendees;
Cloth face coverings are required in accordance with U.S. CDC recommendations;
Participants will not be allowed to congregate. At least six feet of distance must be maintained between people;
No indoor food service will be available;
Valet parking will not be available;
Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures will be implemented with regular sanitation of high touch surfaces at least every two hours;
Frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is recommended for all attendees;

The health and safety of sale participants is of paramount importance. These guidelines are intended as a supplement to assist with safe operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and are subject to change.

The California Fall Yearling Sale will be held on Monday, Oct. 19, at Los Alamitos Race Course in Cypress, Calif.

‘We Are All In This Together’: Spendthrift Reduces Most Stud Fees For 2021

Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm announced reduced stud fees for most of its current roster of stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm in 2021.

“Breeders are the backbone of our industry, and the bottom line is that stud farms only go as breeders go. We are all in this together,” Hughes said. “Our team recognizes the challenges of the times and how the entire breeding community has been affected this year. If we had room to lower a stud fee, we did it. We wish every participant in this great industry the best of luck and the best of health in 2021.”

Reigning champion general sire Into Mischief heads the roster yet again at a previously announced fee of $225,000 S&N and is booked full. He represents the only stallion with an increased fee in 2021.

Perennial leading sire Malibu Moon and popular second-season sire Omaha Beach will both stand for $35,000 S&N. Fellow second-season sire Vino Rosso, last year's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) hero, will stand for $25,000 S&N. Multiple Grade 1-winning juvenile Bolt d'Oro, 2019 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Mitole, and the Northern Hemisphere's No. 1 Third-Crop Sire Goldencents will all stand for $15,000 S&N.

Spendthrift will also add multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma new to its stallion ranks. The Met Mile-winning son of Candy Ride (Arg) is set to compete in the Breeders' Cup next month at Keeneland. His fee will be announced upon retirement.

‘Once In A Lifetime Horse’ Gunnevera Retired, Stud Plans Pending

Trainer Antonio Sano told the Daily Racing Form this week that Gunnevera has officially been retired from racing. Salomon Del Valle's 6-year-old son of Dialed In fractured a left hind leg while training last summer, and has not been able to make it back to the races.

Over the course of his 21-race career, Gunnevera earned over $5.5 million. He took his trainer to the Kentucky Derby in 2017, finishing seventh. Gunnevera won six races and hit the board in a total of six Grade 1 events, including the 2019 Dubai World Cup (third), the 2018 Breeders' Cup Classic (second), and the 2018 Pegasus World Cup (third).

“His race in the Breeders' Cup was the most special for me,” Sano told drf.com. “It was very emotional, very exciting. One more second and he wins the race. He's a once in a lifetime horse who I can't thank enough for what he's also meant to my career.”

Stallion plans have not yet been confirmed for Gunnevera, but Sano hopes he can begin his breeding career early in 2021.
