Curlin, Kitten’s Joy Top 2021 Stallion Roster For Hill ‘N’ Dale At Xalapa

A new chapter begins for Hill 'n' Dale as the stallions take up stud duty at Xalapa Farm just outside of Paris, Ky.

The 13-strong stallion roster, led by stalwart breed-shapers Curlin and Kitten's Joy, arrived a week ago to the newly renovated and restored 1,400-acre stallion station and nursery.

“We are aware of the pressures on the market due to the uncertain climate we find ourselves in,” said John G. Sikura, president of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. “Hill 'n' Dale will once again look to be an industry leader by offering exceptional value in its entire roster. We are all in this together and together we will grow stronger as an industry.

“There are two stallions on the roster in particular who embody our effort to provide exceptional value in these challenging times,” Sikura continued. “Maclean's Music is emerging as an important young sire. Jackie's Warrior has been described as the best two year old in the country. He is yet another example of his sire's ability to produce an elite runner. In addition, Violence who has led virtually every category since his runners hit the track is the co-leading sire of Grade 1 winners with the likes of Into Mischief. His future remains bright. I repeat, we are all in this together.”

Gun Runner Leads Three Chimneys’ 2021 Stallion Roster

Three Chimneys Farm announced its stud fees and roster for the 2021 breeding season.

“The industry finds itself in unusual times,” said Three Chimneys Chairman Gonçalo Torrealba. “One can take comfort in knowing that notwithstanding the challenges of this past year, the Thoroughbred industry proved that it can adapt by working together. In that spirit, we have made the decision to lower stud fees for the upcoming breeding season to accommodate fellow breeders.”

Horse of the Year Gun Runner enjoyed extraordinary success in the sales ring again this year with 40 yearlings averaging $267,750, with yearlings selling for up to $775,000. He was the leading first-crop sire at both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland September.

As a group, his yearlings were consistently well-balanced, athletic and looked precocious and fast. The right buyers signed the tickets which means they will end up in the hands of the world's best trainers. The farm holds high hopes for the six-time Grade 1 winning son of Candy Ride.

Palace Malice ended last year with a Grade 1 winner in Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Structor who was hammered down as a 2-year-old for $850,000. He was one of five first crop stakes winners along with other Graded Stakes Winners Mr. Monomoy and Fly on Angel.

“Three Chimneys is also very pleased to introduce Volatile as the newest addition to the roster,” said Three Chimneys board member Doug Cauthen. “An absolutely gorgeous horse who sold as a yearling for $850,000, he truly has what every commercial breeder is looking for – brilliant speed, a top pedigree and a great physical. His sire Violence, the likely successor to Medaglia d'Oro, is currently the leading sire of Grade 1 winners this year. His pedigree further recommends him as a stallion being out of a stakes-winning Unbridled's Song daughter of the legendary and lightning fast Lady Tak.

“The model of consistency as a racehorse, Volatile posted a 112 Beyer, the fastest of the year, while winning the Aristides at Churchill by eight lengths, stopping the clock for six panels in 1:07.57,” Cauthen continued. “His win in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt at Saratoga, against a field loaded with all Grade 1 winners, saw him with the fastest final quarter in the history of the race.”

Starspangledbanner Colt Tops Final Session Of Tattersalls October Book 2

Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale came to a close with a further five lots selling for 300,000 guineas (US$409,890) or more as demand for quality yearlings continued unabated. In total there were 19 lots that sold for 300,000 guineas (US$409,890) or more and 48 that sold for 200,000 guineas (US$273,269) or more, both records for this fixture.

The top lot on the final day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale was the Starspangledbanner colt out of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Violet's Gift, who was knocked down to Stroud Coleman's Anthony Stroud for 360,000 guineas (US$492,005).

The half-brother to the listed-placed Kodiak West was consigned to the sale by James Hanly's Ballyhimikin Stud.

“We felt he was a very special horse all the way along, he has been special always, and we love Starspangledbanner,” said Hanly. “I just want to thank Helen and Frisk [Jones] who do the daily hard work for minding this horse so well.

“This is a family we have had for ever, we bred every single horse on the page. They are all very fast horses so hopefully this one will continue and will add to the family. It is lovely to be able to show horses such as this, it is a pleasure to be around them. Please god he is a good runner.”

The progeny of first season sire and 2,000 Guineas winner Churchill have been in great demand this week and his daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor mare Pussycat Lips was the most sought after, realizing 340,000 guineas (US$464,779) to the bid of Simon Crisford.

“She is a lovely filly, very racy and athletic, and she showed herself off well,” said Crisford. “MV Magnier really loved her, she will be for a Coolmore partnership.”

The Grade 3 placed Pussycat Lips has produced four winners from her four runners, including the Group/Listed placed pair Special Purpose and Roulston Scar.

The filly was bred and consigned by Croom House Stud, whose principal Denis Brosnan commented: “It was a wonderful sale and we are thrilled with the price, and we're happy that she's been bought by MV Magnier and will be going to Simon & Ed Crisford.”

At the conclusion of Book 2 of the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“At the conclusion of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last week we expressed our sincere thanks to all those who contributed to a yearling sale which, although conducted amidst a backdrop of global turmoil, performed with remarkable resilience. The message at the conclusion of Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale is very similar. We are enormously grateful to every single participant over the past three days, not only for their individual contributions to a sale which has held up remarkably well under the circumstances, but for working with us every step of the way in our efforts to stage the sale in as safe an environment as possible. The COVID pandemic continues to wreak havoc in all walks of life and to have conducted nine sales here at Park Paddocks since the last week of June is a mighty achievement by all concerned and could not have happened without a huge collective effort.

“Newmarket is very much the hub of the European racing and breeding industries and the last few weeks have demonstrated that, despite all the obstacles, business has been able to continue, albeit at lower levels than in recent years. Newmarket has an extraordinary and unique infrastructure and never more has this been apparent than at Books 1 and 2 of the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sales.

“Book 2 has without doubt benefitted from the momentum established at Book 1 and similar to last week, the buyers have consistently remarked on the quality of the stock being offered. As ever the consignors from Britain, Ireland, France and Germany have presented us with a catalogue of genuine quality and the buyers have demonstrated that, even in these challenging times, there is a global appetite for quality bloodstock and the sport of horse racing. Participation from throughout the Gulf region continues to be hugely influential and the sustained involvement from American, Australian and Hong Kong interests has also been notable alongside determined domestic involvement. Tomorrow we move on to Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale which is another Tattersalls yearling sale that consistently attracts buyers at all levels of the market and we will conclude the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale on Saturday with Book 4.”

Bloodlines Presented By ThoroughbredAuctions.Com: Jackie’s Warrior Keeps The Rhythm Going For Sire Maclean’s Music

Stallions are supposed to prove themselves through a fairly lengthy and somewhat rigorous campaign of racing through at least a couple of seasons, scoring victories at the highest level of competition in such a manner as to distinguish themselves as potential titans of breeding and to indicate the qualities that are the most important in their own makeup.

But to every rule, there must be exceptions.

Witness Danzig. Unbeaten in three starts, none in a stakes, and yet arguably the most successful and influential son of the great Northern Dancer.

And it surely appears that breeding has another exception to the rule in the once-raced and emphatically unbeaten Maclean's Music (by Distorted Humor). The powerful bay made one start.

Maclean's Music won that single start by 7 1/4 lengths in 1:07.44 for six furlongs at Santa Anita on Mar. 19, 2011. For that debut, Maclean's Music earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 114, a figure much higher than most other horses ever run at any time in their racing careers.

And the fact of the colt's speed, a dizzy expression of athletic ability seen and not forgotten, was his ticket to a chance at stud. Because the good-looking young horse was perhaps too fast for his own good and never raced again.

Maclean's Music, however, did show the speed he possessed, and that fact brought him great notice. He was also fortunate enough to be bred and raced by Stonestreet, which saw to it that the colt went to stud at the sire-making emporium of John G. Sikura at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in 2013 after the colt hadn't been able to come back to the races as a 4-year-old.

At Hill 'n' Dale, Maclean's Music received good-sized books of good mares due to the renown of his single race and to the racy look of his own physique. Those who believed in the colt were correct, and Maclean's Music sired 2017 Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing in his first crop.

With that Grade 1 winner, Maclean's Music proved that he could sire racehorses who would go farther than sprint distances, and with his two subsequent Grade 1 winners, Complexity and Jackie's Warrior, the stallion has improved the perception among buyers and breeders that he possesses qualities of excellence.

In the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 10, Jackie's Warrior stretched his unbeaten run to four races with a victory by 5 1/2 lengths in 1:35.42. Bred in Kentucky by J & J Stables, Jackie's Warrior took his second Grade 1 in the Champagne; he'd previously won the G1 Hopeful at Saratoga, as well as the G2 Saratoga Special.

Out of the A P Five Hundred mare Unicorn Girl, Jackie's Warrior is the mare's first stakes winner. Unicorn Girl herself is inbred 3×3 to Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew through his sons A.P. Indy and Doneraile Court.

Of more immediate import, however, is the fact that Unicorn Girl won 19 races from 54 starts and nearly a half-million dollars without earning any black type. Most of her victories came in claiming races, and the mare raced through age eight, when she was picked out of a $16,000 claiming race by J & J Stable.

She is a type of hickory racehorse who seems less common in racing today, but Unicorn Girl began her life in the usual way, selling for $45,000 at the OBS April sale in 2007 and making her debut at Saratoga in August of that year.

The now 15-year-old Unicorn Girl is out of stakes winner Horah for Bailey (Doneraile Court), and that mare won the Catcharisingstar Stakes at Calder, then produced a pair of stakes-placed horses, as well as Bernie the Maestro (Bernstein), who won 18 races, including a trio of stakes, and earned $694,317.

Unicorn Girl and Horah for Bailey trace back through the unraced Rahy mare Horah for the Lady to the latter's dam, Istria. An English-bred, Istria was by the Champion Stakes winner Silly Season (Tom Fool) and was ranked as the champion 2-year-old filly in Germany.

Although this family has had plenty of racers and winners since Istria, Bernie the Maestro was a potent reminder that the family has quality as well as quantity on its side, and perhaps that prominent south Florida campaigner played a role in sending his half-sister to the wunderkind who needed, most prominently, toughness in his mates.
