Classic-Placed Bravazo To Join Calumet Farm Stallion Roster In 2021

Bravazo (by Awesome Again), a homebred runner for Calumet Farm, will be the newest addition to the farm's stallion roster in the 2021 season.

The D. Wayne Lukas trainee accumulated over $2 million in career earnings. At two, he was second in the Grade 1 Claiborne Futurity Stakes. Early in his 3-year-old season, he won the G2 Risen Star Stakes, which propelled him into the Triple Crown where he finished a close second in the Preakness Stakes, beaten only a half-length by Justify, the eventual Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year.

Bravazo continued his 3-year-old summer campaign with a second-place finish in the G1 Haskell Invitational Stakes, followed by a third in the G1 Runhappy Travers Stakes. Bravazo went on to run for a third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and a second in the G1 Clark Handicap.

Bravazo is by Awesome Again out of Tiz o' Gold by Cee's Tizzy. His stud fee for 2021 will be $6,000 with discounts given for multiple mare packages and quality mares.

Bloodlines: Red Flag Flies The Banner For Sire Tamarkuz, La Troienne Family

Becoming the seventh freshman sire to get a graded stakes winner, Tamarkuz (by Speightstown) also chalked up his first stakes winner with the victory of Red Flag in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar on Nov. 15.

Red Flag rolled into contention at the half-mile marker after odds-on favorite Spielberg (Union Rags) and second-choice Weston (Hit It a Bomb) roasted each other with a quarter-mile in :22.73 and a half in :45.34. At the half-mile pole, Red Flag was already at Weston's throatlatch, and the red colt went on to win by 7 1/4 lengths in 1:23.56 for the seven furlongs.

This was the second victory from three starts by the progressive colt that trainer John Shirreffs described as “not a great work horse in the mornings.” That contributed to making Red Flag the second-longest price on the odds board, but such will not be the case in the future.

Nor was Red Flag the only longshot who succeeded on Sunday; the immediate success of his sire Tamarkuz was not a given. A handsome son of leading sire Speightstown, Tamarkuz proved his mettle on the racetrack, racing through his 6-year-old season and winning his best race at that age in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, when he had subsequent champions Gun Runner and Accelerate behind him.

With only 29 foals in his first crop, Tamarkuz was not warmly embraced by local breeders when the horse went to stud. Nonetheless, he is making believers.

For any young sire prospect to be commercially effective, he needs to attract 100 mares or more in his initial book. That general number is necessary for a new sire to have much chance of keeping up with the other top members of any entering stallion crop of the last quarter-century or so.

Yet Tamarkuz, from 29 foals, has 10 starters, five winners, a graded stakes winner, and he now sits in 23rd on the list of freshmen sires.

Bred in Kentucky by Elaine Macpherson, Red Flag is the second stakes winner out of Surrender (Stormy Atlantic), whom Macpherson purchased through agent Gayle Van Leer for $40,000 out of the 2014 Keeneland November sale. At the time of sale, Surrender was a 5-year-old and was carrying her second foal on a cover to the Tiznow stallion Morning Line. The foal she produced in 2015 was a filly later named Surrender Now, and two years later, Surrender Now won the 2017 Landaluce Stakes.

Red Flag is the mare's fourth foal and second stakes winner. Sent to the 2018 Keeneland November sale, Red Flag sold for $50,000 to Rosetown Bloodstock out of the Warrendale Sales consignment. Brought to the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale, the colt resold out of the Eaton Sales consignment for $220,000 to Michael Dorsey and races for Tina and Jerome Moss.

All of Surrender's four foals of racing age are winners, and the mare has a yearling colt by Tiznow named Tiz Toujours, who was bought back for $23,000 at the 2020 October yearling sale at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky. The mare's weanling is a colt by first-crop sire Mendelssohn and already carries the name Calm Sea, and Surrender was covered by Catholic Boy in his first season at stud in 2020.

A non-winner from two starts on the racetrack, Surrender has a most distinguished family. By one of Storm Cat's most consistent sons in Stormy Atlantic, Surrender is out of the Mr. Prospector mare Beaucette, a stakes-placed daughter of the graded stakes winner Mackie (Summer Squall).

Mackie was one of seven stakes winners out of the great broodmare Glowing Tribute (Graustark). The others included Grade 1 winners Sea Hero (Polish Navy), winner of the Kentucky Derby and Travers, and Hero's Honor (Northern Dancer), winner of the G1 United Nations and Bowling Green, as well as the latter's full sister Wild Applause.

Wild Applause was the only one of Glowing Tribute's daughters to carry on in a fashion similar to her famous dam, producing four graded stakes winners: Yell (A.P. Indy), Roar (Forty Niner), Trumpets Blare (Fit to Fight), and Eastern Echo (Damascus).

Although not that successful, Mackie produced a pair of graded winners, the Grade 2 Arlington Classic winner Mr. Mellon (Red Ransom) and Grade 3 winner Seeking the Best (Seeking the Gold). This branch of the family went a bit quiet with Beaucette, but her daughter Surrender has put this branch of the great La Troienne family back in the spotlight again.

Sold out of Marcel Boussac's stud in France to E.R. Bradley nearly a century ago, La Troienne produced 14 named foals, first for Bradley and then for Greentree Stud after the dispersal of Bradley's bloodstock. Five of the great mare's foals won stakes and even more became important producers. From the champions and major performers that her family has produced decade after decade around the world, La Troienne is a touchstone of quality in international breeding.

Hidden Scroll Sells For $525,000 To Lead Tuesday’s Trade At Keeneland November Sale

Horses of racing age headlined Tuesday's penultimate session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, which was led by the $525,000 purchase of Hidden Scroll, a 4-year-old graded stakes performer by Hard Spun, by Fergus Galvin, agent for Marc Detampel.

Consigned by WinStar Racing, agent for Juddmonte Farms, Hidden Scroll has competed in graded stakes company at Belmont, Oaklawn and Gulfstream. He is out of the Empire Maker mare Sheba Queen and from the family of Group 1 winner Etoile Montante, Grade 2 winner Starformer and 2020 stakes winner Flavius.

WinStar Racing was the session's leading consignor with sales of $1,644,000 for 27 horses. For Juddmonte, WinStar also sold Delaware, a 4-year-old son of Frankel who was third in Saturday's Artie Schiller at Aqueduct. Steven W. Young, agent, bought Delaware, who is a half-brother to French stakes winner Environs and from the family of Group/Grade 1 winner Proviso.

As agent for Detampel, Galvin was the session's leading buyer, spending $555,000 for two horses. Another purchase was the winning 5-year-old First Defence gelding Vanbrugh, also consigned by WinStar for Juddmonte, for $30,000.

On Tuesday, Keeneland sold 216 horses for $5,697,700, for an average of $26,378 and a median of $10,000.

Cumulative sales through nine sessions are $149,709,700 for 1,984 horses, for an average of $75,459 and a median of $28,500.

ELiTE, agent, consigned five of Tuesday's 10 highest-priced horses. Leading the group was Maryland-bred stakes winner Miss J McKay, a 3-year-old daughter of Hangover Kid, who sold to Jackson Farms for $300,000. A stakes winner of $210,053, the filly is out of Ballykiss, by Street Boss, and from the family of Grade 2 winners Crowned and Best of Luck and Grade 3 winners Betty Lobelia and Lady Horseowner.

Eddie Kenneally, agent for William K. Werner, paid $275,000 for the supplemental entry Edgemont Road, a 4-year-old Speightstown gelding who was third in Keeneland's Lafayette on the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup undercard. Team V LLC consigned Edgemont Road, who is out of Swaythisaway, by Scat Daddy. His family includes champion Rhythm, Grade 1 winner Frost Giant and sire Not For Love.

Shepherd Equine Advisers, agent for Larry Hirsch, spent $180,000 for Catch a Bid, a 4-year-old stakes-winning daughter of Real Solution consigned by ELiTE, agent. She is out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Elusive Champagne and from the family of Grade 1 winner Nereid and Grade 3 winner Belong to Sea.

T&C Horse Farms purchased Moral Reasoning, a 3-year-old stakes-placed daughter of More Than Ready, for $175,000. Consigned by ELiTE, agent. she is out of Alhucema, by Aldebaran, and from the family of Group 1 winner and sire Karakontie, European highweight East of the Moon and Group 1 winner and sire Kingmambo.

David Ingordo, agent, paid $150,000 for the supplement Growth Engine, a 4-year-old Tapit gelding consigned by ELiTE, agent. An allowance winner at Monmouth in his most recent start, on Sept. 19, Growth Engine is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Pyro and a full brother to Grade 3 winner War Echo. He is out of the Wild Again mare Wild Vision.

ELiTE, agent, also consigned Abuse of Power, sold to Preferred Equine, agent for Lindy Farms, for $120,000. A 3-year-old filly by Karakontie out of Oblivious, by Cozzene, Abuse of Power is a half-sister to stakes winner Street Storm.

The session's top-priced weanling was a colt from the first crop of Mo Town sold to P & B Stable for 65,000. Consigned by Mulholland Springs, agent, he is out of Supplement, by Sky Mesa and from the family of Grade 3 winners Thatlookonyourface, Dark Nile and Lou Brissie.

Grade 1 Winner Fog Of War Retires To Questroyal/Hidden Lake Farm In New York For 2021

Chris Bernhard has announced that Fog of War, a Grade 1 juvenile stakes winner, will stand the 2021 season at Questroyal / Hidden Lake Farm near Stillwater, N.Y.

A $400,000 Keeneland September yearling consigned by Gainesway, Fog of War was purchased by White Birch Farm and raced under the colors of Peter M. Brant his entire career.

A precocious 2-year-old, Fog of War won his career debut in an $85,000 maiden special weight at Saratoga, defeating a $800,000 OBS 2-year-old and a $725,000 son of Curlin in a field of nine, racing 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf in 1:03.92. A month later, Fog of War met up with War of Will in a duel to the wire to capture the Grade 1 Summer Stakes at Woodbine over the eventual Preakness Stakes victor in a winning time of 1:33.90 at a mile on the turf.

At three, he was caught at the wire by future Grade 1 winner Win Win Win in the Manila Stakes at Belmont Park, racing one mile on the turf in 1:31.56, just 33/100ths off the course record. The 4-year-old was recently retired after finishing on the board in the G3 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 4.

Fog of War's sire War Front, has perennially ranked among the top 25 sires in the United States. He is the sire of three champions, a four-time highweight in Europe, 95 stakes winners, and 465 winners of 1,271 races, with earnings of nearly $75 million. He is sire of 21 seven-figure sale yearlings and stands at Claiborne Farm for a fee of $150,000.

Fog of War's dam Say, a daughter of Galileo, was a Group 3 winner in Ireland, earning $158,325, and she finished in the top three in five stakes in Ireland and Great Britain.

She produced two full-brothers to Fog of War – Invader, a $500,000 Keeneland September yearling who won the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths, and Naval Intelligence (exported to Hong Kong and renamed Gold Chest), a stakes-winner in Great Britain and handicap winner in Hong Kong.

Fog of War's second dam Riskaverse is a multiple Grade 1 winner of $2,182,429. A stakes winner and Grade 1-placed at two, she captured the G1 Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes twice, the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes, and she won or placed in ten other graded events. At the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale the daughter of Dynaformer commanded $5 million as a racing/broodmare prospect.

This is the family of 2011 Horse of the Year and champion older mare Havre De Grace. Following her career, she was purchased as a broodmare prospect at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale for a record $10 million by Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm.

Chris Larsen commented, “I'm excited to partner with Peter Brant to bring Fog of War to stud in New York. This will give breeders access to the world's most successful sire lines Peter and I love, as well as taking advantage of the lucrative New York State breeder awards and restricted racing programs. We think Fog of War is destined to be New York State's great sire.”

Brant of White Birch farm added, “Fog of War's win first time out at Saratoga and his Grade 1 victory in the “Win and You're In” Summer Stakes at Woodbine beating War of Will, showed us that he was our best colt of that crop and marked him as one of the clear favorites for the 2018 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf. Unfortunately, Fog bucked his shins and would not make the race but his undefeated 2-year-old campaign managed to show everyone his brilliant turn of foot and class. Fog of War has all the makings of a potentially high-class stallion with his conformation, pedigree and speed. I am so thrilled Fog will have the opportunity to be an exciting freshman stallion in New York and also allow White Birch Farm to be a new player in the New York State breeding and racing program.”

Fog of War stands as property of White Birch Farm Inc. and Three C Stables LLC with a stud fee set at $7,000, live foal stands and nurses. A limited number of lifetime breeding rights are available.
