Runhappy Colt Nicky The Vest ‘Ran A Good Number’ Winning Debut For Jonathan Thomas

Robert LaPenta's Nicky the Vest impressed trainer Jonathan Thomas in his career debut win in the finale on Friday's program, where he led gate-to-wire in securing a 3 ¼-length triumph under Kendrick Carmouche in a time of 1:40.67.

Bred in New York by Highclere, the juvenile son of freshman sire Runhappy garnered an 82 Beyer first out against his Empire State-bred counterparts at odds of 5-1 going a one-turn mile.

Thomas has not thought past Nicky the Vest's debut victory but will sort out his options and expressed excitement in what the future holds.

“The scenario played out well and the horse did everything you could ask a firster to do,” Thomas said. “We're still going to see how he comes out of his race. I'm sure we'll keep options open and see how things shake out. He ran a good number, a good number no matter the company. We're really happy with what we saw the other day. He had been training nicely in the morning, so it was good to see that replicated in the afternoon.”

Nicky the Vest is out of the Cat Thief mare Tazarine, whose six offspring of racing age are all winners. He was purchased for $110,000 from the 2019 OBS October Yearling Sale from consigner Stuart Morris.

Juddmonte’s Full Sister To Bonny South On Path To Stakes Company After Fair Grounds Win

Juddmonte Farms Inc's 2-year-old filly Sun Path pressed the early pace of Rock Star Parking, took full command on the turn, and drew off to win a first-level Friday allowance under a hand ride for trainer Brad Cox and jockey Florent Geroux. The margin of victory was 12 ¾ lengths for the .20-1 favorite and she stopped the timer in 1:42.95 for one mile and 70 yards over a fast track.

“It was a short field, but I thought she ran well,” Cox said. “It was her first time around two turns and she continued the education process. It went really well. She's a good filly.”

By Munnings out of the Tapit mare Touch the Star, Sun Path is a full sister to 2020 Fair Grounds Oaks (Grade 2) winner Bonny South.

“At this stage of the game, she's better,” Cox said of Sun Path. “She showed more this summer than Bonny (South) showed as a 2-year-old. She's got a long way to go to catch up to Bonny's accomplishments, but at this stage of the game, there's more talent and speed there and she does things maybe a touch easier.”

According to Cox, the locally run $150,000 Silverbulletday on Saturday, Jan. 16 is “in play,” but he'll likely give her a little more time between starts.

“We will also look at the Martha Washington (Jan. 30 at Oaklawn Park) or we might just wait for the Rachel Alexandra (G2) (Feb.13 at Fair Grounds). We will just see how well she bounces out of this race, how it shapes up, how it plays out and let her tell us.”

One race earlier on the card for Cox and Geroux, Godolphin LLC's Divine Comedy put herself on the map with an impressive maiden score, wiring a field of eight foes by 5 ¼ widening lengths while eased under the wire.

“She appreciated the two turns,” Cox said of the 2-year-old daughter of Into Mischief. “First time out (sixth at Churchill Downs in a 6 ½-furlong sprint on September 17) she ran well but we knew she needed more ground. She had a little minor setback, nothing we had to send her out for, and it took a little time for her to get over that. She had a fantastic breeze here last week, we expected her to run big and she responded well.”

Cox also reported that Juddmonte Farms Inc's Mandaloun, an impressive winner of consecutive races in Kentucky, is being pointed for the $200,000 Lecomte (G3) at 1 1/16 miles on January 16. The Into Mischief colt is scheduled to breeze a local half mile on Saturday morning.

Blended Citizen To Enter Stud At Collett Equine Veterinary Service In Oklahoma

Blended Citizen, a three-time graded stakes winner, has been purchased by DMW Racing Stables and will enter stud in Oklahoma for the 2021 breeding season. Mike Recio brokered the transaction on the 5-year-old son of Proud Citizen on behalf of owners Sayjay Racing, LLC, Greg Hall, and Brooke Hubbard.

At two, Blended Citizen broke his maiden at Del Mar around two-turns, defeating eventual Grade 1 winner River Boyne. In his second start at age three, Blended Citizen picked up his first graded stakes score in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park, a qualifying points race for the Kentucky Derby. Just two starts later, switching back to the dirt in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes, Blended Citizen overcame a six-wide trip to win by open lengths to defeat a field that included eventual graded stakes winner Core Beliefs.

This year, at the age of five, Blended Citizen added the G3 Louisiana Stakes at the Fair Grounds to his resume. He retires with five career wins and earnings of more than $558,000.

“Blended Citizen was an incredibly talented and versatile individual,” said co-owner Brooke Hubbard, who purchased Blended Citizen at the 2017 OBS March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale for $85,000. “He showed tremendous ability to win on three different surfaces and to win graded stakes races on both dirt and synthetic against some of the top horses of his generation. We are excited about his future and to his first-crop of foals in 2022.”

By Proud Citizen, Blended Citizen is bred on the same cross that produced Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell, one of five champions sired by the graded stakes winning son of Gone West. He was bred by Ray Hanson out of the stakes winning Langfuhr mare, Langara Lass, a full sister to graded stakes winning filly Madeira Park. Blended Citizen is a half-brother to stakes winning millionaire and Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin At Lee, and a full brother to stakes winning filly Battlefield Angel, who also placed in the G1 Darley Alcibiades, and is the dam of the graded stakes placed colt Manny Wah.

“We could not be more pleased to acquire an exceptional horse like Blended Citizen,” said Matt Wilkett of Tulsa, Okla.-based DMW Racing Stables. “We think a horse with his depth of pedigree, paired with his ability to win as a two-year-old and at the graded stakes level at three, makes him an attractive horse for breeders in Oklahoma at the southwest region.”

Blended Citizen will stand for an introductory rate of $2,000 at Collett Equine Veterinary Service. There will be a limited number of lifetime breeding rights available to the first 20 mares that are booked for Blended Citizen's first season.
