Classic Winner Tiz The Law Retired To Ashford Stud

Travers Stakes, Belmont Stakes, Florida Derby and Champagne Stakes winner Tiz the Law has been retired from racing on veterinary advice and will stand at Coolmore America's Ashford Stud for the 2021 breeding season.

“From day one when he broke his maiden at Saratoga, we have been watching Tiz the Law closely and he has everything you look for in a stallion prospect,” said Coolmore America manager Dermot Ryan. “He has an outstanding race record, he's a very good-looking individual and he boasts a strong pedigree. Barclay Tagg, Robin Smullen and their team have done a fantastic job with him and we are also grateful to Jack Knowlton and his partners in Sackatoga Stable for letting us be a part of him.”

“The entire Tiz the Law team is deeply disappointed that Tiz the Law will be unable to race as a 4-year-old as planned,” stated Jack Knowlton, operating manager of Sackatoga Stable. “He has provided the 35 owners a unique opportunity to compete and succeed at the highest level of thoroughbred racing. His impressive victory in the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga Race Course was particularly rewarding for the Saratoga based stable. Sackatoga Stable is looking forward to the next chapter of his career as a stallion.”

“While it is unfortunate that Tiz's racing career has been cut short, we have been extremely fortunate and blessed to have had him in our lives”, said trainer Barclay Tagg. “Robin and I were able to pick him out and train him to win the Grade 1 Champagne as a 2-year-old and three Grade 1 races (Florida Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers) as well as run 2nd in the Kentucky Derby this year. He has taken his owners and Barclay Tagg Racing Stable to places that most owners and trainers only dream about. We look forward to his career as a stallion with Ashford Stud.”

But for Ashford stallion American Pharoah, Tiz the Law's sire Constitution would have been champion freshman sire and champion second-crop sire. Off the back of this success, Constitution's fee has risen from $25,000 to $85,000 for the coming season. On the distaff side, Tiz the Law's dam Tizfiz was the winner of seven races including the G2 San Gorgonio Handicap at Santa Anita (now named the Robert J. Frankel Stakes) carrying top weight of 118 pounds.

Tiz the Law's fee will be announced shortly and he will be available for inspection at Ashford starting Monday, Jan 4.

Clear Creek Stud In Louisiana To Offer Industry Scholarship

With an eye toward the future of the industry, Clear Creek Stud in Folsom, La., will be making a $5,000 scholarship donation in the name of their clients to a student with Louisiana-based connections to the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse breeding and racing industry.

The scholarship recipient will be chosen by the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (LaHBPA) and based on their opinion and evaluation of need and merit.

Interested students should send a letter and resume to Eddie Fenasci at the LaHBPA office by Jan. 31, 2021. Letters can be mailed to LaHBPA attention to Eddie Fenasci 1535 Gentilly Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70119 or email to efenasci@lahbpa.org.

The recipient will be named by March 20, 2021 at the Fair Grounds.

Minnesota Thoroughbred Association Stallion Season Auction Begins Jan. 3

The Minnesota Thoroughbred Association will conduct its 2021 Stallion Season Auction Jan. 3 through Jan. 11, featuring more than 50 premier stallions from Kentucky, Florida, Oklahoma and Minnesota. The on-line auction will be hosted at www.thoroughlybred.com.

A new incentive is also being offered for this year's auction from the Minnesota Breeders' Fund. Any breeder who purchases a stallion season through the 2021 MTA Stallion Season Auction and foals in Minnesota will receive a $1,000 check when the foal is registered with the Minnesota Racing Commission in 2022.

“As we leave 2020 behind, organizers at the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association are excited to provide breeders with many terrific stallions to build on in the future,” said Kay King, executive director of the MTA.

Bids will be placed on a rolling bases for all eight days of the sale. Stallion seasons can be searched by state or name on the website. New stallion seasons may continue to be added through the duration of the sale.

Tapit Half To Arrogate Breaks Her Maiden At Tampa Bay Downs

During Thursday's sixth race for maiden 2-year-old fillies at Tampa Bay Downs, trainer Barbara Minshall got a workout watching Diamond Ore battle two equally determined rivals down the stretch of the mile-and-40-yard event.

“I was riding her from the quarter-mile pole home,” Minshall said jokingly after Diamond Ore's half-length victory from Purtiz. Forbidden Dream was another neck back in third in the seven-horse field.

Diamond Ore is by one of the world's leading sires, Tapit, and she is out of the Distorted Humor mare Bubbler, making her a half-sister to Arrogate. That Bob Baffert-trained runner won the 2016 Travers and Breeders' Cup Classic and the 2017 Pegasus World Cup Invitational and Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline, en route to becoming North American Thoroughbred racing's all-time money-earner with $17,422,600.

Samy Camacho rode the winner, who completed the distance in 1:42.25.

Minshall, who trains the regally bred winner for owner Bernard Cleary's Clearview Stable, was especially pleased with Diamond Ore's effort in light of it being her first start on a dirt track. Her three previous tries, including a second-place finish Nov. 14 racing a mile-and-a-sixteenth, were on the all-weather surface at Woodbine in Toronto.

“She is really a nice filly who wants to go longer, and I wanted to give her a little experience,” Minshall said. “Hopefully she learned something from that. The first time she had even worked on dirt was last week (5 furlongs in 1:01 4/5 at Sequel @ Winding Oaks Farms in Ocala), and she worked really well that day.

“Samy rode her perfectly. We've had a lot of luck with him,” Minshall said.

Camacho said he was able to track pace-setter Purtiz and Forbidden Dream comfortably from mid-pack before launching his winning bid at the 3/8-mile pole. But there was no quit in those two, and he had to work hard to secure the victory.

“I was sweating at the top of the stretch, but my filly kept fighting and did the job,” Camacho said.
