‘I See A Lot Of Into Mischief’: First Foal Reported For Maximus Mischief

Spendthrift Farm's Maximus Mischief, the undefeated Grade 2-winning juvenile by Into Mischief, sired his first reported foal early Jan. 9 when a colt was born in Reddick, Fla.

“This colt is very nice with a lot of size for a first foal. The mare is a maiden and rather plain, but the foal looks like (Maximus Mischief) who has certainly moved up the mare. I'm very excited,” said breeder Angela Ingenito. “I see a lot of Into Mischief. He has a nice hip, a lot of bone, a good frontend, and good head and neck. It's a nice representation of the sire.”

The bay colt is the first foal out of the Two Step Salsa mare Rosetta's Gift, who hails from the immediate family of multiple stakes winners Roman Dancer (G3) and I'm All Yours.

One of the early winter book favorites for the 2019 Kentucky Derby, Maximus Mischief was undefeated in three starts at two by a combined 17 lengths, punctuated by a decisive victory in his 2-year-old finale over Tax in the Remsen S. (G2) at Aqueduct. He earned the fastest two Beyer Speed Figures – 98 and 97 – recorded by a 2-year-old in 2018, which also remain the fastest ever from a juvenile by his champion sire.

Maximus Mischief, who covered 196 mares from his popular first book in 2020, will stand his second season in 2021 for a fee of $7,500 S&N. He was recently recognized by Chris McGrath in the Thoroughbred Daily News as the best “value” among second-season sires in 2021.

Q B One, Beholder’s First Foal, Approaches Debut Start

After a bit of a delay, Q B One, the first foal out of multiple Eclipse Award winner Beholder, is on track to make his first start in the coming weeks, Daily Racing Form reports.

Trainer Richard Mandella told DRF's Brad Free that 3-year-old Uncle Mo colt was “three or four weeks away from a race.”

A homebred for Spendthrift Farm, which also campaigned Beholder, Q B One was set to debut last year as a 2-year-old, but Mandella stopped on the colt after a July workout at Del Mar. The colt remains based in Southern California, where he most recently breezed five furlongs in 1:01.80 on Friday at Santa Anita.

Liver Failure Claims International Sire Zoffany At Age 13

The 13-year-old Coolmore Stud resident Zoffany was euthanized today, owing to liver failure.

“Zoffany was a great servant and he'll be a big loss,” said Coolmore's David O'Loughlin.

The son of Dansili, bred by Croom House Stud, won the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes as a juvenile and ran a career best when runner-up to Frankel, beaten just three-quarters of a length, in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

His first crop conceived at €7,500 included three juvenile group/stakes winners at Royal Ascot; namely Waterloo Bridge in the G2 Norfolk Stakes, Illuminate in the G3 Albany Stakes, and Washington DC in the listed Windsor Castle Stakes. This initial crop also included G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club winner and G1 St Leger Stakes runner-up Ventura Storm.

Off the back of this early success, Zoffany attracted several high-quality books of mares which resulted in him siring some top-notch performers. In 2019 his daughter Albigna, owned and bred by the Niarchos Family, proved herself one of the best fillies in Europe when winning the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac.

In the latest season Zoffany was sire of three group-winning juveniles in the shape of G1 National Stakes winner Thunder Moon, G3 Naas Juvenile Sprint Stakes winner and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf runner-up Mother Earth and G3 Marble Hill Stakes winner Minaun. Zoffany's 2020 yearlings sold for up 580,000 guineas, led by a filly bred by James Cloney of Cn Farm and purchased by MV Magnier from consignors Highclere Stud.
