Owners Of Virginia-Bred Or -Sired Horses Earn Nearly $300,000 In 2020 Bonuses

Nearly $300,000 in bonus monies was awarded to owners of Virginia-bred and -sired horses in 2020 courtesy of the Virginia Thoroughbred Association's (VTA) Mid-Atlantic Incentive program. A total of 57 owners, whose horses won at tracks in the Mid-Atlantic region, shared $299,574.75.

The initiative is just one of three offered annually by the VTA. Almost $1.8 million was awarded in the popular Certified Residency program while another $1 million was doled out to breeders in the Commonwealth via the Virginia Breeders Fund program.

“These are exciting times to do business in Virginia,” said VTA executive director Debbie Easter. “Even though Colonial Downs will offer seven weeks of racing this summer, these three incentive programs offer year-round bonus opportunities for breeders and owners. The 2020 monies awarded are all very positive developments. Historical horse racing revenues have just started kicking in so there is lots of growth still to come. We anticipate awarding $3.1 million this year in the Certified program alone. Doing business in Virginia really pays right now.”

The top award of $30,000 went to Chester and Mary Broman, whose Virginia-sired homebred Mr. Buff — with career earnings of $1,295,786 — had a trio of stakes victories in 2020. The 7-year-old New York-bred prevailed in the Empire Classic Handicap, Haynesfield and Jazil Stakes, all at Aqueduct or Belmont. The gelding is by Friend of Foe, who stands at Robin Mellen's Smallwood Farm in Crozet. Mr. Buff kept right on winning as 2021 kicked off with a dominant seven-length triumph in the Jazil again, on Jan. 23.

Louis Ulman and Neil Glasser's Kenny Had a Notion's three wins translated into a $16,000 reward, second among the 57 recipient owners. The 3-year-old Great Notion gelding had victories in a maiden special weight at Delaware and in the Maryland Million Nursery and Jamestown Stakes at Laurel. Bred by Althea Richards, Kenny Had a Notion started out the new year — just like Mr. Buff — with a stakes win in the Spectacular Bid Stakes.

Sir Rockport's six wins, as an 8-year-old, provided the Sola Dei Gloria Stable with $14,100 in reward monies. The ageless Rockport Harbor gelding won four at Penn National and one each at Monmouth and Laurel. Bred by Legacy Farm and Larry Johnson, Sir Rockport also kicked off 2021 with a victory — an impressive four length, gate-to-wire effort at Penn National. That was his 12th win in just over 24 months.

New Farm in Marlton, N.J., had two nice wins with their 4-year-old Summer Front gelding, Reconvene, which triggered a $13,762 bonus. Both victories came at Monmouth and were maiden special weight and allowance scores. Reconvene was bred by Lazy Lane Farms.

Rounding out the top five was Gillian Gordon-Moore and a trio of co-owners who earned $11,835 in awards courtesy of Great Camanoe's two wins last year. The 4-year-old Tonalist gelding, bred by Corner Farm and Patrick Lawley Wakelin, won a maiden special weight at Delaware and an allowance at Laurel.

Paul Hirsimaki's 8-year-old gelding, Divine Interventio, earned over $62,000 in purse monies and a $9,832 incentive bonus last year from three claiming wins at Laurel. The son of Malibu Moon was bred by the William Backer Revocable Estate. His career bankroll of $376,000 has come from 30 “top three” finishes.

Michael Overfelt's Goodluckchuck had a pair of claiming wins at Laurel which spearheaded $9,712 in bonus earnings. The 5-year-old Big Picture gelding was bred by Heidi Overfelt and ushered in the new year with a wire-to-wire allowance victory at Charles Town at 16-1 odds.

My Meadowview Farms was eighth in bonus monies with $9,625 courtesy of Lenstar's win in a $70,000 allowance optional claimer at Belmont. The 7-year-old Shackleford gelding is trained by Nick Zito and was bred by Lazy Lane Farms.

Reiley McDonald's Passion Play was best in a $66,178 allowance at Delaware Park, which led to a $9,450 reward. The 5-year-old Hold Me Back gelding was bred by Mr. and Mrs. C. Oliver Iselin III.

Finishing out the top ten in bonus awards is eFive Racing Thoroughbreds, whose Tan and Tight prevailed in a maiden special weight at Aqueduct last January. The 5-year-old Uncle Mo mare was bred by Jim and Katie FitzGerald. She followed up that success with runner-ups in a Monmouth allowance and the Camptown Stakes at Colonial Downs.

Rachel’s Valentina To Visit Into Mischief In 2021

Rachel's Valentina, a Grade 1 winner and the only daughter of Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra, will be bred to record-setting sire Into Mischef, the mare's owner Stonestreet Farm announced Monday on social media.

The mating would produce the 8-year-old daughter of Bernardini's fourth foal.

Her first foal, the Curlin colt Alejandro, is a newly-turned 3-year-old, and he has raced twice. Alejandro finished fourth on debut in September at Churchill Downs, then he finished second to future Smarty Jones Stakes winner Caddo River in a November maiden special weight, also at Churchill Downs. Trained by Steve Asmussen, who also conditioned Rachel Alexandra, Alejandro is working toward his 3-year-old debut at the Fair Grounds.

Rachel's Valentina followed up with a Pioneerof the Nile filly, a recent 2-year-old who remains unnamed. She delivered a Curlin filly in 2020, then she was bred to Quality Road for the 2021 foaling season, but the mating did not catch.

Racing as a homebred for Stonestreet Stables, Rachel's Valentina won two of six starts for earnings of $738,800. After breaking her maiden on debut, the filly won the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes, then she finished second in the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland. At three, she finished second in the G1 Ashland Stakes and competed in that year's Kentucky Oaks.

Rachel's Valentina is the second and final foal out of 2009 Horse of the Year and 2016 Hall of Fame inductee Rachel Alexandra, who was pensioned from broodmare duty after a pair of difficult foalings. Complications from the birth of Rachel's Valentina required abdominal surgery, an extended stay at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, and a long recovery period after she returned to Stonestreet Farm.

Jess's Dream, Rachel Alexandra's first foal, won his lone start, and he now stands at Ocala Stud in Florida, where his first foals are 3-year-olds of 2021. The son of Curlin was recently represented by his first stakes winner at stud, when Chess's Dream won the G3 Kitten's Joy Stakes on Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park.

Into Mischief, a 16-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday, stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for an advertised fee of $225,000.

He comes off a record-shattering season in 2020, where he set the all-time single-season progeny earnings mark, with over $22 million. It was his second consecutive year finishing atop North America's general sire list by earnings. His runners were led in 2020 by Horse of the Year Authentic, champion female sprinter Gamine, Grade 1 winner Dayoutoftheoffice, who was an Eclipse finalist for champion 2-year-old filly.

RACHEL'S VALENTINA will visit INTO MISCHIEF in 2021! She delivered a lovely filly by Curlin in 2020, has a two-year-old…

‘All The Right Angles And A Great Frame’: Omaha Beach’s First Foal Is A Colt

Spendthrift Farm's Omaha Beach, War Front's brilliant three-time Grade 1-winning 3-year-old of 2019, sired his first reported foal on Jan. 27 when a colt was born at Burleson Farms in Midway, Ky.

“We are thrilled with our first Omaha Beach foal and excited to have 3 more coming here on the farm,” said Lyn Burleson. “This colt has all the right angles and a great frame to go with it. Very athletic.”

Bred by Nice Guys Stable, the gray colt is the first foal out of the young Scat Daddy mare Two Sugars, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Calculator and stakes winner Arms Runner.

Omaha Beach retired to Spendthrift after a decorated 3-year-old campaign in 2019. He jumped onto the Triple Crown trail with three consecutive victories including the Rebel S. (G2) over 2-year-old champion Game Winner and Arkansas Derby (G1) over Improbable and eventual Kentucky Derby winner Country House.

That fall, Omaha Beach defeated older horses and leading sprinter Shancelot when winning the Santa Anita Sprint Championship S. (G1), running six furlongs in 1:08 3/5, and he posted an easy 2 ¾-length victory over Grade 1 winner Roadster in the Malibu S. (G1) to close out his campaign. He was also runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

An earner of $1,651,800, Omaha Beach is out of the Seeking the Gold mare Charming, making him a half-brother to 2014 Breeders' Cup winner and Champion Two-Year-Old Filly, Take Charge Brandi. He covered 215 mares from his popular first book in 2020 and will stand his second season in 2021 for a fee of $35,000 S&N.

For more information about Omaha Beach, please contact Des, Mark, or Brian at 859-294-0030, or visit SpendthriftFarm.com.
