Editorial Returns From Eventful Stay In Peru To Stand In Maryland

Editorial, a half-brother to top sire Uncle Mo, has returned to Anchor and Hope Farm in Port Deposit Maryland for the 2021 breeding season after the COVID-19 pandemic kept him in Peru longer than expected, BloodHorse reports.

The 7-year-old son of War Front shipped to Haras San Pablo in the summer of 2019 for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season, and he was scheduled to return to Maryland to stand what would have been his third season in 2020. However, logistical hangups with quarantine stalled his return in January of last year. Then, once those hoops were cleared, the initial global shutdown at the onset of COVID-19 crippled the cargo shipment industry and created a shortage of available cargo planes, leading to the decision to keep the horse in Peru for the year.

Editorial cleared quarantine for the upcoming breeding season in January. His first foals are 2-year-olds of 2021.

Editorial won one of two starts during his on-track career, finishing second by a head on debut, then charging on the outside in his second start to prevail by a neck. Both races came over the turf at Gulfstream Park for the Coolmore partnership and trainer Todd Pletcher.

The stallion will stand for an advertised fee of $2,500 during the upcoming breeding season, with a “Ship and Win” incentive of $500 for the owners of mares who make their first visit to editorial in 2021.

Catalog For Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale Now Online

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 184 entries for The Gulfstream Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training, to be held on Wednesday, March 31, in the racetrack's walking ring. The sale will begin at 2 p.m.

The under tack show is scheduled for Monday, March 29, beginning at 9 a.m.

“We are excited to be returning to Gulfstream Park in March to conduct the nation's premier 2-year-olds in training sale,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “The Gulfstream Sale annually provides an unrivaled concentration of quality, and this year's catalog is loaded.”

This year's catalog cover features several of the sale's recent star graduates. These include Nadal, winner of last year's Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, Grade 1 and multiple graded stakes winner Bellafina, as well as talented graded stakes winners Yaupon, Donna Veloce, and Share the Ride.

The catalog's back cover provides a list of important races won by Gulfstream graduates since the sale was first conducted at the Hallandale Beach facility in 2015.

“In a short period of time, Gulfstream grads have won 13 different Grade 1 races, including the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Met Mile, and the Florida Derby twice,” continued Browning. “If you want to play at the top of the game, this sale – and its dirt race track – will get you there.”

The catalog may now be viewed online and will also be available via the Equineline sales catalogue app. Print catalogs will be available from Fasig-Tipton offices in late February.

Fasig-Tipton will also offer a supplemental catalog once again this year. Supplemental entries will be accepted on an approval basis.

Kentucky Horse Racing Commission Awards $14.3 Million In Incentive Funds To Breeders

It's payday for many horse breeders in the commonwealth as the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) awards $14.3 million to qualified breeders through the Thoroughbred Breeders' Incentive Fund.

The incentive fund requires owners to board mares in Kentucky from the time of breeding until the birth of the foal. Incentive payments are based on the foal's eventual winnings on the racetrack. Last year, nearly 3,500 races were won by a Kentucky-bred receiving a breeder award.

In a year when the Kentucky Derby and Oaks were raced in the fall and the Preakness a month later, Kentucky-breds won over 245 graded stakes in the United States and 18 group races in Canada, England, France and Ireland. Those victories include Authentic's success in the Kentucky Derby, Shedaresthedevil's win in the Kentucky Oaks and Swiss Skydiver's win in the Preakness.

“We need the commonwealth's signature horse industry to stay strong and engaged as we sprint out of the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of being part of our history, the industry supports many Kentucky families today and will continue to draw new visitors to the state in the future,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “Thanks to Kentucky breeders and a strong racing circuit enhanced by historical horse racing, Kentucky remains a leader in breeding with more stallions than any other state, and representing 42 percent of the foal crop in North America.”

Since its inception in 2006, more than $184 million has been awarded to Kentucky breeders for winning eligible races across the globe. The incentive fund helps ensure the strength and growth of the horse industry in Kentucky. The fund receives 80 percent of the 6 percent sales tax paid when breeding a stallion to a mare in the commonwealth. In addition, the 2020 fund received $1.1 million from wagers on historical horse racing.

Finalists Announced For 2020 Maryland Thoroughbred Industry Renaissance Awards

The fourth annual Renaissance Awards, a cooperative effort between the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association and Maryland Jockey Club, will look a bit different this year as the top Maryland owner, trainer and jockey, Maryland stallion, broodmare and breeder, as well as the champion Maryland-breds of 2020 will be presented virtually this month. Special awards will be presented to Pimlico and Laurel Backstretch Employees of the Year as well as to an industry Unsung Hero.

The Renaissance Awards were created to recognize the best of Maryland racing and breeding from the previous year. Finalists will be highlighted the week of Feb. 15, with champions and industry award winners announced throughout the week of Feb. 22, via the Maryland Horse Breeders Association's social media accounts and website.
