Grade 1 Winner Taiba Retired To Spendthrift Farm For 2024

Zedan Racing Stables' Taiba, winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, G1 Pennsylvania Derby and G1 Malibu Stakes as a 3-year-old a year ago, has been retired from racing and taken up residency at Spendthrift Farm, where he will begin his stud career in 2024.

Taiba will stand for an introductory fee of $35,000 S&N and is available for inspection by appointment.

“There are very few stallion prospects that tick all the boxes, to use the old cliché. Taiba is certainly one of those horses that possesses everything commercial breeders are looking for today, and we believe he will be wildly popular,” said Spendthrift general manager Ned Toffey. “We are grateful to Mr. Zedan for the opportunity to stand such an exciting horse.

“Taiba will be afforded every resource necessary to have a successful stallion career, and we think he has a big chance to hopefully replicate some of the good fortune we've had in recent years in terms of developing young sires. We invite all breeders to make an appointment with one of our sales guys to come out and see him. He's really a stunning individual,” added Toffey.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Taiba was a leading 3-year-old in North America in 2022, finishing second to Epicenter in the Eclipse Awards voting for champion 3-year-old male. A $1.7 million 2-year-old purchase at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, the talented chestnut broke his maiden on debut by 7 1/2 lengths at Santa Anita, stopping the clock in 1:09 4/5 for six furlongs and earning TDN Rising Star honors. He also earned a gaudy 103 Beyer Speed Figure, putting the performance among the fastest maiden wins this century.

In another feat, Taiba returned five weeks later to win the Santa Anita Derby in just his second start and first around two turns. His dominant 2 ¼-length victory in 1:48 2/5 for 1 1/8 miles earned him a 102 Beyer and a berth into the Kentucky Derby as the fastest horse going into last year's coveted Run for the Roses. No horse had ever won the Santa Anita Derby off a six-furlong maiden win.

After narrowly losing a stretch duel to Cyberknife in the G1 Haskell, a more-seasoned Taiba turned the tables in the $1 million G1 Pennsylvania Derby, defeating Zandon and Cyberknife with a decisive three-length victory. He ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48 3/5 and recorded a 108 Beyer. Taiba finished on the board behind Flightline in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland, earning a career best 110 Beyer at the 1 1/4-mile distance.

Taiba closed out his successful 3-year-old campaign by cutting back to seven furlongs in the Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita and dominating by 4 1/4 lengths in 1:21 3/5. He earned a 106 Beyer, giving him triple-digit Beyer numbers in all but one lifetime performance, from six furlongs to 1 1/4 miles. His three Grade 1 victories came by an average margin of over three lengths.

“Taiba is a special horse to us,” said Amr Zedan of Zedan Racing Stables. “He is the first horse to jump from a six-furlong maiden to immediately winning the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. I knew he was special and that is why I insisted he make that jump. He rose to the calling like the true champion he is and made us proud.”

Out of the 14-time stakes-winning Flatter mare Needmore Flattery, Taiba retires as Gun Runner's only three-time Grade 1-winning son to date. He earned $2,356,200.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard: Disco Ebo Carries The Pace Through The Summer

Disco Ebo set the early pace among Pennsylvania incentive award earners for the 2023 season, and Weigelia filly has maintained that advantage through the early summer months, bringing in $193,952 to her various connections for her Keystone State roots.

That figure was compiled with Pennsylvania breeder's awards, stallion owner's awards, and owner's bonuses through July 31, creating one of the country's most lucrative incentive structures.

Disco Ebo earned her spot at the top of the list over the course of four starts, all at Parx Racing.

On Jan. 24, Disco Ebo took a four-wide trip through to a powerful stretch drive to prevail in a six-furlong race by two lengths under jockey Frankie Pennington. The same rider was aboard on Feb. 15 when Disco Ebo led at every point of call in a 5 1/2-furlong race to win easily by 6 3/4 lengths.

Disco Ebo then entered stakes competition for the first time this season, easily going wire-to-wire in the Penn's Landing Stakes on March 7 to win by a widening 6 3/4 lengths.

The filly suffered her first and lone defeat of 2023 thus far in the Unique Bella Stakes on April 24, getting clear early, but ultimately relenting to Morning Matcha to finish second. She has not raced since the Unique Bella, but she has been working toward a return at Parx.

Robert Reid Jr. trains Disco Ebo for the partnership of Cash Is King and LC Racing. Because the filly was both bred and sired in Pennsylvania, she was eligible for a 40 percent owner bonus on her purse earnings for races at Parx. In Disco Ebo's four starts, her owners earned an additional $28,560 because of her status in the Pennsylvania-bred program.

Disco Ebo was bred in Pennsylvania by Stephen and Susan Quick's St. Omer's Farm, which earned $67,984 in breeder's awards for the filly's four starts. Horses bred and sired in the Keystone State are eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus on non-maiden races.

The filly earned WynOaks Farm, the home of sire Weigelia, $16,996 in stallion's awards. Registered Pennsylvania-breds by a state-resident sire earn a 10 percent bonus on purse for first-through-third efforts at tracks within the state.

Over the course of three seasons on the track, Disco Ebo has won eight of 17 starts and earned $488,444. Three of those victories have come in stakes company – one each at two, three, and four.

Disco Ebo is out of the winning Disco Rico mare Katarica Disco, who is the dam of 10 winners from 11 foals to race.

The cross between Weigelia and Katarica Disco has proven especially effective, also producing Smooth B, a multiple stakes winner and earner of $772,267; stakes winners Fat Kat and Fore Harp, Grade 2-placed Disco Rose, and stakes-placed Pink Princess.

Australian Superstar Winx’s First Foal To Be Offered At Inglis Easter Yearling Sale

The first foal of champion racehorse Winx to be offered for public auction – a beautiful filly – will be the star attraction at next year's Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

A daughter of champion racehorse and leading sire Pierro, the filly will arguably be the most significant individual yearling to ever be offered for sale in the Southern Hemisphere.

Winx is one of the most accomplished racehorses in the history of the Thoroughbred – she is the only horse in history to win four Group 1 Cox Plates, the record-holder internationally for Group 1 wins (25) and the only horse on the planet in the past 50 years to have won as many races consecutively (33).

Winx defeated 78 individual Group 1 winners during her career while her peak Timeform rating of 134 was equal to the likes of Japanese champion Deep Impact and champion European Enable and better than Makybe Diva, Sunline, Atlantic Jewel, More Joyous, Japanese Champions Almond Eye and Gentildonna and U.S. champion Zenyatta.

Her yearling filly will be offered on Day 2 of the 2024 Easter Sale, which will be held at Inglis' Riverside Stables complex in Sydney on April 7 and 8.

The filly will be offered on behalf of Peter and Patty Tighe, Woppitt Bloodstock, Elizabeth Treweeke and Rick Treweeke.

She will be consigned by Coolmore Stud, the farm on which Winx herself was raised.

“Winx has given us all unexplainable joy and it was agreed by the ownership group that by offering this filly for sale, we make available the opportunity for someone else to manage the next racing chapter of what has been a great story,'' co-breeder Peter Tighe said.

Woppitt Bloodstock's Debbie Kepitis added: “Winx will forever hold a special place in our hearts and we are very proud of what she achieved as a racehorse and now as a mother.

“It seems fitting that the sale will be run almost five years to the day from her final race start, which resulted in a 25th Group 1 win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.”

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was humbled by the ownership group's decision to choose the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale to offer the filly.

“This is the rarest of opportunities and the greatest of honors to be afforded the chance to showcase this unique filly to a global audience,'' Hutch said.

“I have been lucky enough to see the filly on a number of occasions and I think the biggest compliment that I can pay her is that independent of her illustrious mother, she is a special filly in her own right.

“The Inglis Easter Yearling Sale has long been known as the best of the best, but to have the daughter of Winx, one of the greatest racehorses of all time, as part of the catalogue is a truly special opportunity, not just in the context of the Australian market, but the international bloodstock market as a whole.

“The 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale is going to be a particularly special occasion which will generate unprecedented excitement and anticipation.

“It's going to create an incredible spectacle in Sydney, with the sale as part of a week-long showcase of Australian racing and breeding along with Days 1 and 2 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.''
