Toast To Vino Rosso: Colt Out Of Differ Brings ‘A Lot Of Size And Scope’

Throughout the breeding season, the Paulick Report will be sharing photos of foals from the first crop of Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso in the “Toast to Vino Rosso” series.

Over the past few weeks, we've spoken to several breeders about what Vino Rosso brings to the table as a stallion, and plenty of them have said they wanted to add some leg to their mare.

We've got another example of that, with this colt out of the winning Pulpit mare Differ. He was born on March 15 at Burleson Farm, and his second dam is the Grade 3-placed stakes winner Contrast.

“We're extremely happy with him,” said breeder Lyn Burleson. “He's got a lot of leg, got a lot of size and scope, really good hip. Just a really nice foal.”

Burleson said the decision to send Differ to Vino Rosso was swayed by the stallion's generous leg, and what that could contribute to the ensuing foal.

“She mated well with him, and their physical types matched up well,” he said. “She's a Pulpit mare with a really big hip, not so much leg, and he was a scopier type of horse, so we thought they'd compliment each other well.

“He's got more of Vino Rosso's leg and scope, but he's the color of the mare,” he continued.

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $25,000.

Vino Rosso won won six of 15 starts and earned $4,803,125 on the racetrack. In addition to his signature Breeders' Cup Classic score, the stallion picked up victories in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, and the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes.

It’s A Girl! Champion Songbird Delivers Tapit Filly

Two-time Eclipse Award winner Songbird has delivered a Tapit filly at Timber Town Stable in Lexington, Ky., the farm's social media account announced Sunday.

This is the third foal for Songbird, who had an Arrogate filly in 2019 and a Tapit filly in 2020. All three were bred by the Whisper Hill Farm operation of Mandy Pope, who bought Songbird as a broodmare prospect for $9.5 million at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Songbird, an 8-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro, won 13 of 15 starts over the course of her racing career for earnings of $4,692,000. She was named champion 2-year-old filly of 2015 and champion 3-year-old filly of 2016, with nine Grade 1 victories including the 2015 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland.

Tapit, a 20-year-old son of Pulpit, is a perennial leading sire on the racetrack and in the sales ring. He stands at Ganiesway in Lexington, Ky. for an advertised fee of $185,000.

Among Tapit's runners of note are Belmont Stakes winners Tapwrit, Creator, and Tonalist, champions Untapable, Hansen, Stardom Bound and Unique Bella, and Grade 1 winner Constitution, who is himself rising quickly up the sire ranks. Tapit is led in this year's Triple Crown trail by champion Essential Quality and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes winner Greatest Honour.

Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association To Hold New Board Election, Rescind Broodmare Rules Following Lawsuit

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association will hold a new election for its board of directors by a judge's order, following a pending lawsuit alleging the voting in last year's original race might have been fixed, NOLA.com reports.

Judge Danyelle Taylor of Jefferson Parish's 24th Judicial District Court also ordered on Thursday that the LTBA pay $90,000 in legal costs to plaintiff Lora Pitre. Perhaps most importantly, the decision dissolves all decisions the board has made since it was elected last summer, including a major change to the state's breeding rules regarding broodmare residency.

Pitre is the owner of Peach Lane Farms in Opelousas, La., a former three-term member of the LTBA board, and a vocal opponent of the new broodmare rules. In her January filing, she claimed the board tried to hide a review of pending membership applications and sent ballots to non-members in an attempt to swing the voting toward candidates in favor of implementing the new rules.

Among the changes the new bylaws brought about was allowing breeders to send their mares to stallions outside the state in consecutive seasons, with the ensuing foals still eligible to be registered as Louisiana-breds. Opponents of the rule argued it would harm the business of Louisiana's stallions without the requirement to breed back in-state to maintain state-bred eligibility, while unfairly benefitting larger breeders who could afford to ship their mares out of state.

Judge Taylor agreed with the notion that the LTBA board had not properly shown that the election had adhered to its own bylaws, and ordered an arbitration panel to supervise a new board election. In the meantime, the previous board was reinstated to run the day-to-day operations.

The LTBA board will also submit additional documents and sit for depositions as a result of Thursday's hearing.
