Canadian Derby Winner Real Grace Named Alberta’s 2020 Horse Of The Year

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Alberta Division) hosted the 47th Annual Alberta Thoroughbred Awards in a virtual format on May 20th, 2021, led by Horse of the Year Real Grace.

Real Grace, a Mineshaft gelding, won two of nine starts in 2020, highlighted by an 18-1 upset victory in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Century Mile. Earlier in the season, he also won the Derby Trial Stakes at Assiniboia Downs.

The gelding started his 2020 campaign at Tampa Bay Downs after selling as a unraced racing-age prospect at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Winter Mixed Sale in January. He raced twice in Florida, including a second-place effort in a maiden special weight for owner and trainer Bernell Rhone. He then shipped north to Canterbury Park for another second-place effort, this time with additional owners Shelley Brown, Jean McEwan, and Bette Holtman.

Real Grace then went north of the border for the remainder of his campaign and raced for trainer Shelley Brown, starting at Assiniboia Downs in Manitoba, where he broke his maiden in the Derby Trial Stakes. He then finished fifth in the Manitoba Derby.

The remainder of the gelding's season was spent at Century Mile in Alberta. He debuted with a win in the Count Lathum Handicap, and later found the highlight of his season in the Canadian Derby, Alberta's biggest race.

In addition to taking home Horse of the Year honors, Real Grace also earned the title as Alberta's champion 3-year-old male.

Bred in Kentucky by Peter Johnson, Real Grace is out of the stakes-winning Yes It's True mare True Way of Grace.

WinStar Farm Sire Laoban Dies Unexpectedly

Laoban, a leading second-crop sire, has died unexpectedly, WinStar Farm announced today.

The 8-year-old son of Uncle Mo had relocated to WinStar Farm last year from Sequel Stallions in New York and was standing his initial season at WinStar.

“It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce that we lost Laoban this morning,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar's president, CEO, and racing manager. “He had quickly become one of our favorite stallions, and it's sad that we will not have the opportunity to see how influential he could have been as a sire. His passing will leave a tremendous void for all of us, and he will be greatly missed.”

As a sire, Laoban is represented by Grade 1 winner Simply Ravishing, a 6 1/4-length winner of the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland, and Grade 2 winner Keepmeinmind, winner of the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, multiple Grade 1-placed and most recently fourth in the Preakness Stakes, among others.

Powell Sees Residual Value In Santa Anita Record $150,000 Claim

Trainer Leonard Powell made a Santa Anita record claim of $150,000 Saturday for Nimbostratus, a 3-year-old French-bred filly that won the third race at six furlongs on turf by a neck under Abel Cedillo in 1:09.28.

The previous Santa Anita record of $125,000 was made in 1997. There have been three claims this meet for $100,000 at the Arcadia, Calif., track.

Claimed from trainer Peter Miller, the filly's new owner is Mathilde, wife of Leonard, who comes from an accomplished family of horsemen and as a youth in France rode as an amateur on both the flat and over jumps.

A bay daughter of Wootton Bassett out of the Invincible Spirit dam Bahama Spirit, Nimbostratus was third in the Grade 3 Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 14, won an overnight race by a nose on March 6 and was last of 10 in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes on May 1.

She has won three of 10 career races, breaking her maiden in Ireland on July 3, 2020.

“She has residual value as a broodmare,” said Powell, a 44-year-old native of Deauville, France. “That was the main reason for claiming her. We have no immediate plans (for her next race).

“We'll see how she comes out and find the best possible spot for her.”
