Midnight Storm Filly Fastest At OBS June Under Tack Opener

Hip No. 107, a daughter of Midnight Storm consigned by Scanlon Training & Sales, Agent, worked an eighth in :9 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the opening session of the Under Tack Show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 June Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age.

The bay filly is a half sister to stakes winner Miss My Rose out of Ava G, by Afternoon Deelites, from the family of Grade 1-placed stakes winner Winter Treasure.

A pair of youngsters shared honors for the session's fastest quarter, stopping the timer in :21 1/5.

Hip No. 5, a chestnut filly by Uncaptured consigned by Ocala Stud, is a half sister to stakes winning OBS graduate Seismic Jolt out of Valid Concorde, by Concorde's Tune, a full sister to stakes winning OBS graduate Rocky River.
Hip No. 18, a bay colt by Candy Ride (ARG) consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc, (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, is out of Viva Malala, by Malibu Moon, a half sister to Grade 1-placed stakes-winning OBS graduate Icabad Crane.

Two horses worked quarters in :21 2/5.

Hip No. 98, I'm a Cutie, consigned by Dynasty Thoroughbreds, is a gray or roan filly by Cupid out of Arc Angel, by Bodemeister, from the family of Grade 1 winner Shared Account.
Hip No. 155, a bay filly by Practical Joke consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, is out of Bustle, by More Than Ready, a half sister to graded stakes winner Takeover Target.
Hip No. 162, a dark bay or brown colt by Into Mischief consigned by White Lilac, Agent, is a half brother to stakes winner Little Nick V. out of Campionessa, by A.P. Indy, a daughter of grade one stakes winner Pacific Squall.

Eight horses breezed eighths in :10 flat.

Hip No. 22, Treasured Glory, consigned by Hidden Brook, Agent for Patricia Generazio, is a bay colt by Treasure Beach (GB) out of stakes placed Wave of Glory, by Midshipman, a half sister to stakes placed Pomeroy's Package.
Hip No. 30, a bay filly by Gone Astray consigned by AVP Training and Sales, Agent, is out of White Hands, by Exchange Rate, from the family of graded stakes winner Control System.
Hip No. 46, Midnight in Alaska, a bay filly by Almasty consigned by Dark Star Thoroughbreds (Stori Atchison), is out of stakes placed Working At Night, by Tiznow, a daughter of stakes winner No Reason.
Hip No. 82, Little Afrodite, consigned by Silvestre Chavez Thoroughbreds, Agent, is a chestnut filly by Shackleford out of Aly Pie, by Gold Case, a half sister to graded stakes winner Spelling Again.
Hip No. 122, a chestnut filly by Gormley consigned by Hemingway Racing and Training Stables, LLC, Agent, is out of graded stakes winner Beat the Blues, by Great Pyramid (IRE), from the family of stakes winner Dedicated Queen.
Hip No. 135, a dark bay or brown filly by Anchor Down consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, is a half sister to stakes placed Desanctus out of Bint Elusive, by Elusive Quality.
Hip No. 170, a chestnut filly by Central Banker consigned by Envision Equine, Agent, is out of Casablanca Babe, by Horse Chestnut (SAF), a half sister to graded stakes winner Musket Man.
Hip No. 185, consigned by Goldencents Thoroughbreds, is a chestnut filly by Flat Out out of Chasida, by North Light (IRE), a half sister to champion Private Zone, from the family of champion Chief Bearhart.

Hip No. 61, Cupids Dream, a daughter of Cupid consigned by Dynasty Thoroughbreds, Agent, turned in the day's fastest three eighths, stopping the timer in :33 2/5. The bay filly is out of About a Dream, by Bodemeister, a half sister to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Leah's Secret.

Bloodlines: Country Grammer Piles On Laurels For Deep Juddmonte Family

This year has been a good one for the family of the mare Nijinsky Star, a half-sister to stakes winner Six Crowns (by Secretariat) who became the dam of champion Chief's Crown (Danzig). Nijinsky Star herself became the dam of three stakes winners who all produced stakes winners themselves.

In addition, her unraced daughter Willstar (Nureyev) also produced a pair of stakes winners, (Etoile Montante and Uno Duo), and this branch of the family has been making hay in 2021. In addition to the graded stakes winners Bonny South (Munnings) and Obligatory (Curlin), Country Grammer (Tonalist) added further laurels to this set of the family by becoming its first G1 winner since Etoile Montante.

That Miswaki filly won the G1 Prix de la Foret, as well as taking seconds in the Prix Marcel Boussac, Prix Maurice de Gheest, and Matriarch. Speed was her forte, but Country Grammer has shone over more extended trips, and his best effort to date came in the Hollywood Gold Cup at Santa Anita on May 31.

This branch of the Miss Carmie family through champion Chris Evert (Swoon's Son) has been developed by Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms from the Nijinsky mare mentioned above, Nijinsky Star. Juddmonte purchased her for $700,000 at the Keeneland November sale out of the consignment of Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services (John Stuart), agent for Carl Rosen.

Entrepreneur and sportsman Rosen had purchased Chris Evert as a yearling, named her for the tennis star who had branded a line of sportswear through his clothing business, and bred both Six Crowns and Chief's Crown, among others.

Juddmonte bred the subsequent generations of mares leading to Country Grammer, including his second dam Prima Centauri (Distant View), a half-sister to Etoile Montante who had been unplaced in two starts in France. That put Prima Centauri among those who were surplus to needs for Juddmonte, and the mare subsequently sold for $270,000 at the 2005 Keeneland November sale to Dixiana Farm, carrying a foal by Forestry (Storm Cat). Prima Centauri's best racer was the Marju gelding Bodes Galaxy, who ran second in the G2 Richmond Stakes and third in the G2 Gimcrack as a 2-year-old.

The mare's later Forestry filly of 2008 was Arabian Song, a winner at three. She is the dam of Country Grammer and his half-sister Joyful Cadence (Runhappy), who is a winner this year and was third in the G3 Miss Preakness Stakes at Pimlico in May.

Bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Stables, Arabian Song had sold for $40,000 to Rabbah Bloodstock at the 2009 Keeneland September sale, won a maiden claiming race ($40,000) at three, and subsequently changed hands privately prior to foaling Country Grammer, who was bred in Kentucky by Scott Pierce and Debbie Pierce.

A May 11 foal, the 4-year-old Country Grammer is from the first crop by Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist (Tapit) and is his sire's first Grade 1 winner. The breeders sold the bay colt as a yearling for $60,000 at the Keeneland September sale, and he resold as a 2-year-old in training to Bradley Thoroughbreds, agent for Paul Pompa, for $450,000 out of the Wavertree Stables consignment at the 2019 OBS April sale.

Country Grammer raced for Pompa, winning the G3 Peter Pan last season, but after his death in 2020, Pompa's Thoroughbreds were dispersed by his estate. At the 2021 Keeneland January sale, Country Grammer sold for $110,000 to WinStar Farm, was sent to trainer Bob Baffert, and made his first start of the year in the G2 Californian, finishing second.

The Hollywood Gold Cup was the colt's second start of the year, and he won by a head over the Brazilian-bred Royal Ship (Midshipman), who had won the Californian on April 17 by a neck from Country Grammer.

One of a half-dozen stakes winners to date by Tonalist, who won four G1 races and earned $3.6 million, Country Grammer appears to be the best athlete from this branch of his famous family for a couple of generations and is the best racer to date for his young sire, who stands at Lane's End Farm outside Versailles, Ky.

OBS June Sale Under Tack Show Begins On Wednesday

The Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 June Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Horses of Racing Age begins Wednesday, June 2, and runs through Sunday, June 6. All five sessions begin at 7:30 a.m. ET.

Hip No.'s 1-185 will breeze on Wednesday. Hip No.'s 186- 370 go to the track Thursday; Hip No's 371-554 breeze Friday; Hip No's 555-738 work Saturday and Hip No.'s 739 – 927 will go to the track Sunday.

The Sale is set for Wednesday, June 9th through Friday, June 11th with each session beginning at 10:30 a.m.

OBS will again offer Online Bidding during the June Sale. Buyers will be able to go to the OBS website and register to gain bidding approval, then access the OBS Bidding Screen with their credentials. Walking videos and conformation photos may be available in addition to under tack videos for each horse.

The Under Tack Show will be streamed live via the OBS website at obssales.com and via the Blood-Horse, Daily Racing Form, TDN and Past The Wire websites. They will also be available in the Video Room as well as several kiosks in the breezeway and covered walking ring. Visitors to Ocala will find the videos available for in-room viewing at The Courtyard by Marriott, Holiday Inn & Suites, Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, Residence Inn and the Ocala Hilton, plus lounge viewing is available at the Hilton. The website's searchable and sortable master index provides links to under tack videos, pedigree and consignor information as well as pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed. It has also been updated to allow shortlist creation. Hip No. 435, Bustin Disco, a filly by Bustin Stones, is out of a half sister to newly minted stakes winner Shaker Shack, winner of Aqueduct's New York Stallion Stakes on April 18th.
Hip No. 715, a daughter of Keen Ice, is out of a half sister to graded stakes placed Lady Traveler, who added a third place finish in Pimlico' Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) to her resume on May 14th.
Hip No. 927, a filly by Midnight Lute, has a newly minted stakes winning half sister in Orbs Baby Girl, winner of the Penn Oaks on May 28th.

Kerin Joins Hidden Brook Farm As Sales Account Manager

Hidden Brook Farm announced on May 27 that Melbourne, Australia native Josh Kerin has joined the farm as a sales account manager.

Josh's initial experience with horses began on a family harness racing farm before venturing to nearby Caulfield Racecourse as a teenager to work under the tutelage of classic winning trainer Colin Little while completing his local education. Josh pursued his Equine Science degree at Colorado State University while punting for the football team and serving as a veterinary assistant at the prestigious Colorado State Equine Reproduction Lab.

Sergio de Sousa, part owner of Hidden Brook Farm, said, “We're very pleased to welcome Josh to our team. He gained valuable experience interning at Three Chimney's Farm and also making the rounds at the sales with several prominent agents. He'll assist in recruiting and bloodstock services and take an active role in our sales consignments. Josh brings great enthusiasm and passion to his position and we, as a group, are looking forward to working together to grow our enterprise.”
