Speightster Colt Fastest At Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita Under-Tack Show

A colt by WinStar Farm resident Speightster turned in the fastest furlong of the Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale under-tack show on Monday, covering the distance in :10 2/5 seconds.

The bay colt, offered as Hip 109, is out of the stakes-placed Artie Schiller mare Pankhurst, from the family of Grade 1-placed Apassionato, and Grade 2-placed Mama's Pro and Pro Prado. L. G. consigns the Kentucky-bred colt, as agent.

Monday's fastest juvenile at a quarter-mile was Hip 54, a first-crop Cupid filly who covered the distance in :22 flat.

The dark bay or brown filly is out of the winning Medaglia d'Oro mare Wild Mocha, who is the dam of three winners from five foals to race. Grade 2 winners Passion For Action and Payton d'Oro are in the filly's extended family. L. G. also consigned the day's fastest quarter-mile horse, as agent.

Stormy Atlantic, Sire Of 100 Stakes Winners, Pensioned At 27

Hill 'n' Dale Farms announced today that Stormy Atlantic, the sire of over 100 stakes winners, has been pensioned. Relocated from Florida to Hill 'n' Dale in 2002, the son of Storm Cat proved to be one of the most reliable turf sires of recent time.

A prolific sire of stakes winners, he averaged 12 stakes winners a year for ten straight years.

Raced in the colors of Arthur Appleton, Stormy Atlantic retired to Bridlewood Farm where he stood his first three years at stud. He is the sire of champions Up With the Birds ($1,870,376), Stormy Liberal ($2,212,580), El Tormenta ($816,106), Stormy Antarctic ($946,832), Conquest Typhoon ($759,449), Leonnatus Anteas ($600,074), Maritimer ($362,835), Storm Allied ($229,114), Dixie Wave, etc. and Grade 1 Winners Get Stormy ($1,606,812), Stormy Lucy ($851,700), Stormello ($700,100), Next Question ($424,391), Victor Security, etc.. In addition, he is emerging as an important broodmare sire.

Star Of Night Named West Virginia’s 2020 Horse Of The Year

The West Virginia Thoroughbred Breeders Association presented its 2020 year-end awards on May 23 at The Barns at Maple Valley in Shenandoah Junction, W.V., led by Horse of the Year Star of Night.

Star of Night won six of seven starts during her 2020 campaign, all at Charles Town, earning $152,405 for owner Huntertown Farm and trainer Jeff Runco.

The season was a steady climb up the class ladder, starting with a 5 1/2-length maiden special weight win on Jan. 30. A jump to the allowance ranks yielded similar results, going gate to wire to win by 5 3/4 lengths on Feb. 29. She suffered her lone defeat of the season in the following start, beaten just a head in a 6 1/2-furlong allowance on May 15.

The Creative Cause filly got back on the winning track with force on June 27, winning a 6 1/2-furlong allowance by an astounding 10 3/4 lengths.

Star of Night moved up to stakes competition of that win, and the story remained the same. She won the Sylvia Bishop Memorial Stakes by 5 1/4 lengths on Aug. 28, then she took the West Virginia Tourism Office Breeders' Classic Stakes by 4 3/4 lengths on Oct. 10.

Her season finished with her biggest test, stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for the My Sister Pearl Stakes. It was also her biggest fight of the year, battling against Bridging the Gap, the horse that handed her the lone defeat of the season, and prevailing by a half-length.

Star of Night was bred in West Virginia by Heinz Steinmann, out of the Mailbu Moon mare Splendiferous Moon.
