Airdrie Stud Names Jocelyn Brooks Director of Sales

Brereton C. Jones's Airdrie Stud has announced that Jocelyn Brooks will become the new director of sales for the Midway, Ky., nursery.

She will fill the role formerly held by Cormac Breathnach, who was recently named Keeneland's director of sales. In her new role, Jocelyn will work directly with Airdrie's breeders and clients in helping with all aspects of their mating plans as well as being a leading presence for the Brereton C. Jones consignments at the major Thoroughbred auctions.

Jocelyn has spent the last six years as chief of staff for Sagamore Racing based at Sagamore Farm, in Glyndon, Md. Sagamore Farm is owned by Kevin Plank, the founder, chairman and brand chief of Under Armour. The historic farm was formerly owned by Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Jr.

Jocelyn's responsibilities at Sagamore included racing administration, breeding and sales analysis, horse roster management, hospitality, social media and community engagement. Jocelyn is passionate about Thoroughbred aftercare and created Sagamore Farm's Next Move program, which retrains retired Sagamore Racing horses for second careers such as dressage, hunters/jumpers, eventing and therapy work. She is also a proud supporter of the Retired Racehorse Project and The Real Rider Cup and serves on the Board of Directors for the Maryland Horse Foundation. In her free time, Jocelyn enjoys riding her Sagamore retiree, Perpetual Optimism.

Man Of The Night Leads Second Session Of Tattersalls July Sale

The Tattersalls July Sale continued in robust fashion on the second day with four lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more and a clearance rate above 90 percent for the second consecutive day.

The top lot on the second day of the Tattersalls July Sale was the Richard Hannon-trained Man of the Night who was knocked down to Sheikh Abdullah Al-Hmoud Al-Malek Al-Sabah for 175,000 guineas, the highest price achieved on the Thursday of the July Sale since 2017.

The 4-year-old colt is a winner over 1 1/4 miles since the catalog was published and has a Timeform rating of 101. Showing good form on fast ground, the son of Night of Thunder has also placed fourth twice in listed company and boasts a smart pedigree, being out of a daughter of the three-time Group 1 winning champion French filly Mandesha.

A spokesperson for Sheikh Abdullah Al-Hmoud Al-Malek Al-Sabah revealed; “He might go to Kuwait, but we have horses in training in the U.K. so he may stay here for a time. We were looking for a horse who would stay further than a mile.”

The well-bred Restitution provided another highlight of the session when bought by Mark Richards on behalf of Mark Player's International Thoroughbred Solutions for 150,000 guineas.

Mark Richards, a recent repatriate following 22 years working for the Hong Kong Jockey Club, commented:

“It is nice to be back, I am acting here for Mark Player's International Thoroughbred Solutions. He is well used to purchasing horses here to go to Australia and the mere fact of me being back here is using old contacts and old friends as much as anything else. He likes to have someone on the ground to see the horses, knows the sort of horse I will be looking at and said that if I found anything that might suit to get in touch.

“I thought this is a lovely sort of horse, a lovely looking horse, hopefully he will acclimatize to Australia and he will head straight there now.”

Elaborating on Restitution's particular appeal, Richards added:

“You are just looking for a horse who can operate on good or faster ground and one you think can get a trip. He had already proven that he can stay a mile and a half, and they seem to get more distance when they get down there anyway. It is advantage to have been able to have performed on a quicker track rather than a slower track.”

The Jamie Railton consigned Restitution is by Frankel out of Restiana, a listed winning full-sister to the Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Restiadargent. It is the second six-figure sale in two days for the pedigree as Tianadargent, another full-sister to Restiana and Restiadargent, was sold to Alex Elliott yesterday for 100,000 guineas.

Fasig-Tipton has catalogued an additional nine entries to its July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, and an additional two entries to its July Breeding Stock Sale.

July Selected Horses of Racing Age

The latest entries are catalogued as hips 664-673, which may now be viewed online. They include:

Assertive Style (Hip 665): Three-year-old daughter of Nyquist won an allowance race at Indiana Grand on June 30 by more than five lengths. Consigned by James B. Keogh (Grovendale), agent for Machmer Hall.
Cibollian (Hip 667): Four-year-old colt won an allowance race at Churchill Downs in his most recent start on June 18. From the family of G1 winners Wicked Whisper and Point of Honor, he is consigned by Buck Pond Farm, agent.
Kisses So Sweet (Hip 668): Indiana-bred 2-year-old daughter of Klimt won a maiden special weight at Indiana Grand by 3 1/2 lengths on July 6. Consigned by John Ennis Training, agent.
Vodka N Water (Hip 673): Two-year-old colt finished second in his most recent start, the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes, at Churchill Downs on June 26. He also finished second in Kentucky Juvenile Stakes at Churchill on April 28. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

She Takes Flight (Hip 453): Three-year-old daughter of leading broodmare sire Bernardini, from the family of Champion Soaring Free. Offered as a broodmare prospect by Paramount Sales, agent.

The July Breeding Stock and July Selected Horses of Racing Age sales will take place on Monday, July 12, at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks facility in Lexington, Ky. The July Breeding Stock portion will begin at 2 p.m., and July Selected Horses of Racing Age session will begin immediately after the Breeding Stock auction has concluded.

On the following day – Tuesday, July 13 – Fasig-Tipton will conduct The July Sale of Selected Yearlings beginning at 10 a.m.

Online bidding and phone bidding will be available for all sales.

Godolphin Draft Dominates Opening Day Of Tattersalls July Sale

The Tattersalls July Sale got off to a strong start on the opening day with a strong Godolphin draft dominating proceedings with four of the top five prices on a day that saw 15 lots selling for 100,000 guineas or more. The clearance for the day was a remarkable 93 percent and the turnover of 5,952,100 guineas has been bettered only twice on the opening day of this fixture.

The Godolphin draft is always a highlight of the Tattersalls July Sale and this year's renewal was no exception with the well-bred Aureum topping the session at 220,000 guineas. Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock made the winning bid and revealed:

“She has been bought for an established owner-breeder client of ours. She has a fantastic page, and she made a lot of money as a yearling. She is a lovely, lovely mare, the sister was top top class over here and she is in-foal to a great stallion.

“We knew she wasn't going to be given away here, the entire draft has some stand-out mares. She is quality, and fingers crossed she carries a good foal and is a successful broodmare, which she has been bought to be.”

The daughter of Medaglia d'Oro was sold in foal to Invincible Spirit and is a half-sister to the Group 3 City of York Stakes winner Nemoralia, placed in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes and the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

The second lot to realize 200,000 guineas or more on the opening day was the Shamardal mare Excellent View who was knocked down to Charlie Gordon-Watson for 200,000 guineas. The Barton Sales consigned mare was sold in foal to exciting young sire Mehmas and with a filly foal by the record-breaking stallion at foot.

Barton Stud's managing director Tom Blain commented:

“She is a smashing mare, she had a lovely Mehmas foal at foot who is a good example of what she is carrying, and in this sale she stood out a bit. The foal is good and she has got a blacktype runner this year. She was sold for a good Irish client and I am delighted for them.”

Excellent View's first foal is the high-class Acclamation gelding Mutaraffa, runner up in the listed Dubai Dash and fourth in the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint this year. She is out of the listed Empress Stakes winner Pearl Grey and her sale crowned a successful few minutes for Barton Sales, who had sold Tianadargent for 100,000 guineas two lots previously. The full-sister to the Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Restiadargent was also offered in foal to Mehmas and was knocked down to Alex Elliott.

Howson & Houldsworth Bloodstock's Matt Houldsworth was another to secure one of the top priced Godolphin mares when he went to 160,000 guineas to land Birdwatcher. The 4-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo is out of the U.S. Grade 3 winner Bizzy Caroline, a half-sister to the five-time Grade 1 winner Lady Eli, and was offered in foal to the four-time Group 1 winning sprinter Blue Point.

Houldsworth commented: “I thought she was a very good physical and obviously she cost a lot of money as a yearling. She's got a good covering too, I'm a big fan of Blue Point, and it's a lovely, deep family as well. Hopefully she can be a nice mare going forward. She's heading to America.”

The 30-lot strong Godolphin draft realied a total of 1,522,700 guineas at an average of 50,757 guineas.

The Tattersalls July Sale continues on Thursday, July 8, with the morning session starting at 9:30 a.m. and the evening session commencing at 5:15pm.
