Mo Town Colt Brings Top Price Of $450,000 Monday At Keeneland September Sale

Ensemble Stables spent $450,000 for a colt from the first crop of Grade 1 winner Mo Town to record the highest price on Monday and mark another day of strong trade at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

The bullish market show no sign of slowing when Keeneland sold 319 horses for $27,330,000, for an average of $85,674 and a median of $60,000. With four of 11 sessions remaining in the auction, 1,488 horses have sold through the ring for $306,213,000, for an average of $205,788 and a median of $150,000.

Consigned by Gainesway, agent, the session's leading consignor with sales of $3,262,000 for 27 yearlings, the colt is from the family of Grade 1 winners Minardi and Johannesburg and Grade 2 winners Stanford and Tale of the Cat. His dam is Closing Move, by Bernardini.

A colt from the first crop of Good Magic out of Grade 2 winner Heart Stealer, by Speightstown, brought $425,000 from Klaravich Stable. He was consigned by Bedouin Bloodstock, agent.

Ben McElroy, agent, paid $400,000 for Vitamunn, a daughter of Munnings consigned by Lane's End, agent. Out of winner Vitae, by Awesome Again, Vitamunn is from the family of stakes winners Bonita Meadow, Meadow Bride, Prairie King and Devil's Halo.

John Ballantyne/NBS Stable paid $390,000 for a colt by Army Mule who is the first foal out of the Tapit mare August Snow, a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winners Hoppertunity and Executiveprivilege. The colt was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales, agent.

Gainesway, agent, also consigned a colt by Empire Maker who sold to Donato Lanni, agent for SF Bloodstock/Starlight/Madaket for $300,000. A half-brother to Grade 3 winner Trophy Chaser, he is from the family of European champion Air Force Blue.

Kenny McPeek, agent, was the session's leading buyer, purchasing six yearlings for $950,000.

The September Sale continues tomorrow and runs through Friday. All sessions begin at 10 a.m. ET.

Arizona Fall Mixed Sale Catalog Now Online

The catalog for the 2021 Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association Fall Mixed Sale is now online, featuring 66 horses on offer.

The auction will take place Thursday, Oct. 28 at Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre in Queen Creek, Ariz.

This year's catalog features 83 yearlings, 14 broodmares, and three horses of racing age. While the majority of the yearlings cataloged are Arizona-breds, the group on offer also features horses born in California, Colorado, and Kentucky.

Stallions whose first crops of yearling are represented in the catalog include Army Mule, Bocephus, Bolt d'Oro, Cloud Computing, Coastline, and Prospect Park.

The ATBA will offer $500 travel vouchers to buyers whose total purchase equals $3,500 or more through the sale ring at this year's auction. Multiple buyers of yearlings in partnerships will receive only one travel allowance.

Virginia-Certified Filly By Outwork Takes Grand Champion Honors At Virginia Yearling Futurity

The annual Virginia Thoroughbred Association Yearling Futurity took place Sept. 8 at the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds under clear skies, comfortable temperatures and $35,000 in prize money on the line.

Four divisions were contested — Virginia-bred/sired colts/gelding and fillies, and Virginia-certified colts/geldings and fillies — and the top two finishers from each returned to compete for Grand Champion and Reserve Champion honors.

Congratulations to Djuric Sporthorses LLC, Anna M. Simms DVM and Patrick Nuesch's bay Virginia-certified filly by Outwork, who took Grand Champion honors shortly after winning the Certified-Fillies category, final class of the morning's festivities. The victorious filly is out of Tanguerray by Good Journey.

Reserve Champion title went to breeder/owner Susan Cooney's unnamed colt by Mucho Macho Man out of Leva Mae by Emancipator, who kicked things off earlier by winning the Virginia-bred/sired colt/gelding class.

Runner-up in the colt/gelding category was My Friend Paddy, a bay colt by Friend or Foe out of Banco Banner by Parker's Storm Cat bred and owned by Renee Bourke. Quest Realty and Daniel Wukich's grey colt Here's Liam took third. He is by Liam's Map out of Stay Here by Dehere.

Phyllis Jones' chestnut Friendly Teller prevailed in the Virginia-bred/sired fillies division. She is by Friend or For out of Money Chaser by Central Banker. A grey filly by Cross Traffic finished second. Owned by Pat Ramey and Macie Szwarc, the runner-up is out of the Great Notion mare, Happiest Ending. An unnamed bay filly owned and bred by Morgan's Ford Farm took third. She is by Midnight Lute out of Skipalong by Include.

Joan Fontana's dark bay by Great Notion was awarded blue ribbon in the Virginia-Certified colt/gelding class. The winner is out of the Broken Vow mare, Perfect Cocktail. Quest Realty and Daniel Wukich's bay colt by The Factor was runner-up (Moon Stepper- Lo Bucker) and bay colt Shade Tree Corner, owned by Tim Hulings and Analia Larossa finished third (Friesan Fire – Birch Circuit – Jiggs Coz).

Value Plus Gelding Tops CTHS Alberta Thoroughbred Sale

The 2021 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Alberta Division) Thoroughbred Sale posted significant gains across the board on Sept. 17, led by a $32,000 (Canadian) Value Plus gelding.

The auction took place at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta, offering horses of all ages.

Focusing on the yearling section, which made up the bulk of the catalog, a total of 39 horses changed hands for revenues of $427,360, marking a 30 percent improvement from the 2020 sale, when the same number of yearlings brought $327,400. The average sale price rose 30 percent to $10,957 from $8,394, and the median grew 111 percent to $9,500 from $4,500.

Don Knight and Don Danard bought the sale-topper, Hip 30, a Value Plus gelding, for $32,000.

The chestnut gelding is the second foal out of the multiple stakes-winning Harlan's Holiday mare Holiday Maker. Bred in Alberta, the gelding hails from the family of Peruvian champion Ole Pegasus and Grade 2-placed stakes winner Adore. C. W. Matier consigned the sale-topper.

The all-ages portion of the catalog was led by a supplemental entry, Hip 1S, the unraced 2-year-old Bits of Lemon Drop, who sold to Perry Pellerin for $5,000. The Alberta-bred Declassify filly is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Saint Lemone, and she was consigned by Workwize Ent. Stables.
