Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Ninetypercentbrynn Didn’t Need Stakes Starts To Earn Awards

On the board in each of her first seven starts this year, 3-year-old filly Ninetypercentbrynn is putting together an impressive resume among her fellow Pennsylvania-breds.

The 3-year-old daughter of Weigelia collected a total of $69,700 for her connections via her state-bred and state-sired status through the end of June, in addition to the $117,700 she earned on the racetrack, all without ever starting in a stakes race in that span of time.

Racing for owner-breeder LC Racing, Ninetypercentbrynn's 2021 campaign has improved with every passing month. The Robert Reid, Jr. trainee broke her maiden in her sixth start of the year, seventh overall, and immediately wheeled back to win a first-level allowance race by six lengths.

Ninetypercentbrynn's incentive earning potential was multi-pronged, as a horse both bred in the state and sired by one of its residents.

She earned $39,950 in breeder's awards, which in her case paid out 50 percent of purse earnings for her initial six top-three finishes, then 40 percent for her allowance victory. Ninetypercentbrynn also earned $21,760 in owner's bonuses, a 40 percent bonus based on her races occurring at Parx in Bensalem, Penn.

The $7,990 Ninetypercentbrynn earned in stallion awards contributed to Weigelia's total of $50,896 on the year, good for second overall in the standings. The stallion's primary earner, Beren, earned $15,349 of Weigelia's total through the end of June.

Indiana-Bred Yearlings Hit Record At Keeneland September Yearling Sale

Over the course of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale, all 10 Indiana-bred yearlings consigned to the sale went home to new barns and new destinations. The sale, which was breaking records before the second week was complete, saw the total for Indiana-bred yearlings selling totaling $483,500, a record in recent years.

The highest selling Indiana-bred was Hip 829, a yearling by Gormley and out of the Aljbar mare Northern Kraze, bred by Deann and Greg Baer, DVM, and consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. The flashy filly sold to Tommy Town Thoroughbreds out of Santa Ynez, California, for $125,000 from the fourth session. The filly's half-sister by Jimmy Creed, Krunch, is a black-type stakes winner already earning $241,082 in limited racing at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino.

The second highest seller was Hip 1926, sold to Kenneth McPeek for $75,000. The colt by Kantharos and out of Ice Women (Street Sense) shined on a day where two other Indiana yearlings sold as well.

Jay Oringer, co-owner of 2020 Indiana Horse of the Year Piedi Bianchi purchased a yearling by Good Magic and out of Our Lesmis (Yes It's True) for $30,000. Oringer is excited for the prospect of another top Indiana-bred runner to campaign not only in Indiana, but nationwide, just as he has with the gray mare.

“I was so happy to see Jay purchased our Good Magic filly,” says breeder Dennis Farkas. “He's done such a nice job with Piedi Bianchi.”

Pocket Aces Racing Partnership has entered the regional racing scene by purchasing their first Indiana-bred yearlings at Keeneland September. Agent Marc Wampler had nothing but positive things to say for hip 3319, a filly by Sharp Azteca and by Sarah Elizabeth (Sky Mesa) consigned by Ballysax Bloodstock.

“Hip 3319 ticked all the boxes I was looking for… She is a leggy filly with a forearm-to-canon ratio I associate with a low and long stride,” Wampler says in his notes. “She has just enough strength where she needs it the most, in her hips and her gaskins, while the rest of her body has just enough strength to stay sound and not wear her down over the course of a two-turn race.”

The overall average for the yearlings sold was $48,350, with hopes of more positive gains as the sales season continues. Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association Announces Inaugural Online Auction Hosted By Wanamaker’s

Wanamaker's will host the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association's first-ever online auction. The sale will be a mixed sale open to Pennsylvania-bred weanlings, yearlings, and racehorses, in addition to broodmares and broodmare prospects owned by a PHBA member.

“We are excited to partner with PHBA for their first online auction of PA-breds and utilize the platform in a way that can make state-bred horses more accessible,” said co-founder Liza Hendriks. “We will maintain our normal monthly sales while adding in feature sales.”

“PA-breds have made their mark both in Pennsylvania and across the country,” remarked PHBA Executive Secretary Brian Sanfratello. “We wanted to give our breeders an opportunity to have a venue to showcase their horses. With owner bonuses up to 40 percent and breeder awards up to 50 percent, we're sure buyers will take a look at our program.”

Entries for the Pennsylvania-bred sale will close on Oct. 19, the catalog will be released on Oct. 20, and the horses will sell on Oct. 28. The entry fee for the Pennsylvania-bred sale will be discounted to $150 and commission will remain at 5 percent on sales and 0 percent on RNAs.

Grade 1 Winner Valiance Retired, To Be Offered At Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Valiance, a Grade 1 winning daughter of multiple leading sire Tapit, has been retired from racing and will be offered at Fasig-Tipton's upcoming November Sale on Nov. 9 in Lexington, Ky. Bluewater Sales will consign the 5-year-old mare for owners Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Martin S. Schwartz, and CHC Inc.

Valiance took last year's Grade 1 Spinster Stakes in tremendous style, defeating a top-class field that included two other Grade 1 winners. She followed up that victory with a game second in the Breeders' Cup Distaff to multiple champion Monomoy Girl, finishing ahead of another four Grade 1 winners.

In addition to being a Grade 1 winner on dirt, Valiance won her first three career starts on turf, including Monmouth's Open Mind Stakes as a 3-year-old. Trained throughout her career by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, she has career earnings of $809,575.

“Valiance is a top-class race mare and a terrific individual,” commented Pletcher. “She's always been a true professional to train in the morning and was so versatile on the racetrack in the afternoon. She's a good one.”

A $650,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearling, Valiance carries an elite pedigree to complement her outstanding race record and conformation. Her first dam Last Full Measure, by Empire Maker, captured the G1 Madison Stakes. Her second dam, Lazy Slusan, is a multiple Grade 1 winning distaffer and millionaire.
