Champion Elite Power Retiring To Juddmonte Farms After Breeders’ Cup

Juddmonte Farms announced today that defending Eclipse champion Elite Power, winner of the 2022 $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint, will take up stud duty alongside Multiple Grade 1 winner Mandaloun (Into Mischief) upon retirement after competing in this year's 40th edition of the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

By Curlin, the leading sire of Grade 1 winners for the third year in a row, the striking chestnut colt sold as a yearling for $900,000 at the Keeneland September sale. Out of multiple graded stakes winner Broadway's Alibi, his dam was runner up in the Kentucky Oaks who sold as a broodmare for $2.15 million. She hails from the family of champion 2-year-old filly Eliza.

Elite Power flashed his brilliance in his maiden win at Churchill, drawing off by nine lengths, clocking the final eighth of a mile in :11 and change while being geared down to the wire. The final time for the seven panels was 1:21 flat and was the start of an eight race winning streak.

His next win came in an allowance race, also at Churchill, going a mile where he drew off by 3 1/4 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:34 flat. His stakes debut came in the Grade 2 Vosburgh where he demolished the field, winning by five and three quarter widening lengths. In front of a crowd of 85,834 fans at Keeneland on Breeders' Cup day, Elite Power defined himself a Champion with a decisive victory in the Sprint against a packed field which included five-time Grade 1 winner Jackie's Warrior as well as Aloha West, the previous year's winner of the race.

Elite Power's 2023 campaign started in Saudi Arabia where he showcased his prowess against an international field, annexing the $1.5 million G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint, leaving Gunite in his wake some 3 1/4 lengths back in second. Veteran jockey extraordinaire Frankie Dettori said after the race, “He's an aeroplane. He took my breath away.”

Back stateside for his next start, he easily won the G2 True North in a hand ride. The True North was followed by the G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga. In a hard fought battle, against a worthy adversary in Gunite, Elite Power prevailed at the wire notching his eighth straight victory.

To date, the Juddmonte color bearer has amassed earnings of $2,735,711.

Florida To See Breeder, Stallion Award Increases In 2024

The Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association announced today a substantial increase in awards paid to Florida breeders and stallion owners for 2024 through their Annual Awards Plan that was approved Thursday by the Florida Gaming Control Commission.

The plan increases, which were enabled with the enactment of HB 7063, would increase Florida breeder and stallion awards by one-third, from the 15 percent level in 2023 to as much 20 percent of the announced gross purse in 2024.

HB 7063 is a $1.3-billion tax package championed by the FTBOA, ultimately supported the state's Thoroughbred industry and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on May 25. It includes $5 million provided to the FTBOA for Florida breeding awards and incentives.

Breeder awards will be paid at 12.5 percent for first place, 5 percent for second place and 2.5 percent for third place, subject to specified caps. Those caps would also increase to $12,500 for first (an increase from $10,500 in 2023), $5,000 for second (an increase from $3,000), and $2,500 for third (an increase from $1,500).

Stallion awards in 2024 will be capped at $20,000 (an increase from $15,000) for wins in black-type races in Florida.

“The historic passage of HB 7063 has a profound positive effect on the Florida Thoroughbred breeder and stallion awards as evidenced by this announcement,” FTBOA CEO Lonny Powell said. “The Florida-bred benefit carries to the racing side in a big way in the form of significantly more lucrative purse supplements for Florida-breds at both Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs. At Gulfstream Park in 2024, we project that dollars offered to our Florida-breds will increase an amazing 90 percent in 2024 compared to this year. The Tampa Bay Downs incentives gain another 50 percent.

“We are already working on 2026 and beyond.”

The total Florida breeder and stallion awards budget for 2024 is projected to be more than $8 million, a 52 percent increase from $5.3 million in 2023.

“On behalf of our board, FTBOA members and industry, I can't emphasize how important and significant these Florida-bred breeder awards and racing incentives are to the breeders and owners of Florida-breds and how they bring stability to the industry,” FTBOA President George Isaacs said. “Thank you to Lonny Powell, Matt Bryan, Jon Rees, Warren Husband and the team. The time is sure right to buy, own, race or breed Florida-breds.”
