‘Classy-Looking Filly’ Is First Foal For Spendthrift Farm’s Thousand Words

Spendthrift Farm's Thousand Words, the undefeated Grade 2 winner at two and multiple stakes winner at three by Pioneerof the Nile, sired his first reported foal on Tuesday when a filly was born at Bison Ridge Equine in Bartlesville, Okla.

Bred by Hidden Creek Farm, the chestnut filly is the first foal out of the Laoban mare Laoban Furen, whose dam is the stakes-winning and stakes-producing Malibu Moon mare Hung the Moon. Laoban Furen is a half-sister to Brill, a million-dollar, sale-topping yearling and Santa Anita stakes winner.

“She's a really nice foal out of a maiden mare that is from a good family. This is a classy-looking filly and very correct,” said Scott Pierce, owner of Hidden Creek Farm.

A million-dollar yearling himself, Thousand Words was an undefeated 2-year-old, breaking his maiden on debut before stretching out around two turns to capture the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity. At three, he won the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita and went on to defeat leading 3-year-old Honor A. P. in the Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar in a final major prep for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, earning a 104 Beyer.

Thousand Words, who is out of the multiple Grade 2-winning and Grade 1-placed mare Pomeroys Pistol, retired to Spendthrift where he bred 184 mares in his first book in 2021. He is set to stand his second season at stud for a fee of $7,500 S&N.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Li’lbito’charm Earned A Lot Without A Stakes Start

The conventional road to a big check in Pennsylvania's lucrative incentive program involves entering and winning state-bred stakes races, but there are plenty of horses that have brought in serious money without ever entering the gate in a stakes contest.

There is no better example of this than Li'lbito'charm, who earned her connections $144,546 in 2021 through the end of October racing exclusively below the stakes level. That placed her 11th among Pennsylvania incentive earners through October, and all ten of the horses in front of her reached their spots in part with stakes earnings.

The daughter of Smarty Jones had a career season in 2021, winning six of 15 starts and finishing in the money in five additional starts, all coming at Parx Racing.

That steady campaign of wins and placings meant Li'lbito'charm generated incentive earnings in nearly all of her starts last year.

That included $67,041 for breeder Nick Polydoros. As a Pennsylvania-bred and -sired horse, Li'lbito'charm was eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus for races run in her home state.

Li'lbito'charm is out of the Polydoros-bred stakes-placed Dixieland Heat mare Li'lbito'sunshine, whose seven foals to race are all winners. She is a half-sister to stakes winner Sunshine Included and stakes-placed Sunshine's Son Bob.

Li'lbito'charm changed hands through the claim box three times in 2021, landing most recently with owner Ylliehus 5 Star and trainer Ralph Riviezzo.

The mare's multiple owners divided an owner bonus of $30,744 through the end of October, which was the third-biggest payout in that column at that point of the year. For races at Parx, Pennsylvania-breds are eligible for a 40 percent purse bonus, meaning the mare's frequent wins and top-three finishes saw a significant boost because of where she was born.

Finally, Li'lbito'charm raised $16,760 in stallion awards for Patricia Chapman, the owner of sire Smarty Jones. Registered Pennsylvania-breds by Pennsylvania sires generate a 10 percent bonus on purse earnings for top-three finishes run within the Keystone State.

Smarty Jones, the fan-favorite dual classic winner, will stand the 2022 season at Equistar Training and Breeding in Annville, Pa. He generated $43,774 in stallion awards last year through the end of October, ranking him seventh in that category.

Breeders’ Cup Winner Structor Sold To Stand In Japan

Structor, the winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, has been sold to begin his stallion career in Japan.

The deal was brokered by Ramiro Restrepo's Marquee Bloodstock, and it was announced via the company's social media channels on Jan. 17.

Marquee Bloodstock pinhooked the son of Palace Malice in partnership with Pick View, purchasing him as a yearling for $160,000 and selling him for $850,000 at the 2019 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. March Sale of 2-Year-Olds In Training.

Structor went unbeaten during his 2-year-old season, winning on debut in a Saratoga turf maiden special weight, then taking the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont Park. He then shipped to Santa Anita Park for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, where he got up late to win by three-quarters of a length. The campaign saw him be named an Eclipse Award finalist for champion 2-year-old male.

After a layoff of more than a year, Structor returned for one more start in February 2021, where he finished fourth in a Gulfstream Park optional claiming race.

Structor retired with three wins in four starts for earnings of $710,880, racing for owners Jeff Drown and Don Rachel, and trained by Chad Brown.

Bred in Kentucky by Three Chimneys, Structor is out of the winning More Than Ready mare Miss Always Ready, who is also the dam of Grade 2-placed Always Carina. Miss Always Ready is a full-sister to 2010 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner More Than Real.

Wanamaker’s January Sale Catalog Now Online

Wanamaker's has released its January Sale catalog, comprised of 33 hips including 12 no-guarantee stallion seasons for 2022.

Highlights of the catalog include a three-horse offering of broodmares from McMahon Thoroughbreds of Saratoga, most notably Credit Analyst, a 4-year-old daughter of Central Banker currently in-foal to Goldencents.

Proceeds from the 12 stallion seasons on offer will be donated to Love My Pitties, a non-profit rescue, sanctuary, and rehabilitation program for dogs coming from high kill and rural shelters.

More detailed information on the 33 offerings can be found at wanamakers.com. Prospective buyers may browse the website to view pedigrees, pictures, and videos of each hip offered. In-person inspections may be scheduled by contacting sellers with the information provided in the catalog.
