Bidding Now Open For Indiana Mixed Digital Sale

The final portion of the 2023 Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association's (ITOBA) Fall Mixed Sale, the Mixed Digital Sale, went live today, Oct. 16 on HorseAuctionsUSA.com.

The Mixed Digital Sale takes place entirely online and includes a mix of 23 broodmares, weanlings, and yearlings.

The Mixed Digital Sale Sale hosted by Horse Auctions USA began at 8 a.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 16 and runs through 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, Oct. 19. Bids can be placed in real-time throughout the run period or interested buyers can place “maximum bids” and let the computer do the work for them.

Lots will begin to close at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, Oct. 19. They are scheduled to close three minutes apart, starting with Lot #1. This is a soft close auction: if a bid is placed in the final two minutes, the auction's closing time will extend for two minutes until there are no new bids.

“As a regional market, we (Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association) are always looking for new and innovative ideas to attract new people to the state of Indiana. We hope people will take a few minutes to look at the offerings in our Digital Sale hosted by Horse Auctions USA on behalf of ITOBA,” Pat McGhee, ITOBA President.

The Mixed Digital Sale gives people around the world the opportunity to get involved in Indiana's lucrative Thoroughbred breeding and racing program. Twenty eight of the 38 stakes held at Horseshoe Indianapolis in 2023 are restricted to Indiana-bred and sired horses. These stakes have combined purses of more than $3.4 million. The purses for the bred and sired horses in Indiana are among the best of any regional program.

The response to the state's growing program has been tremendous. Indiana was one of just two states with an increase in mares bred in 2022 compared to the prior year. An economic impact analysis conducted by Purdue University shows that Indiana has had a 59 percent increase in horses owned, trained, and bred in the state from 2007-2020.

Louisiana Champion Pound For Pound To Stand At Blue Star Racing In 2024

Blue Star Racing is proud to announce the arrival of Louisiana legend Pound for Pound (Redding Colliery / Buttercup's Song, by Unbridled's Song) to their breeding facilities in Scott, La., where he joins Rushie (Liam's Map / Conquest Angel, by Colonel John), Breaking Lucky (Lookin at Lucky / Shooting Party, by Sky Classic), and Count Alexander (Scat Daddy / Intelyhente, by Smart Strike).

“We are thrilled to add a local Louisiana legend and Champions Day classic winner to our stallion roster,” said Dex Comardelle of Blue Star Racing.  “With new legislation raising purses across the state, along with breeders' awards boosted to 25 percent, now is the time for breeders to invest in Louisiana.”

The precocious Pound for Pound broke his maiden in his first performance and went on to become a stakes winner at two, four, and six, and stakes-placed at three and five.

In his juvenile year, he captured the $105,000 Louisiana Futurity after winning an allowance only eight days prior. At three, Pound for Pound placed second in both the Crescent City Derby and the Louisiana Legends Cheval Stakes.

At four, after scoring a second in the Star Guitar Stakes, Pound for Pound went on to win the $150,000 Louisiana Champions Day Classic Stakes.

In his final career season, Pound for Pound, won the $75,000 Star Guitar Stakes and placed in the EVD Classic Stakes, as well as the Louisiana Champions Day Classic Stakes. Overall, Pound for Pound was nearly 70 percent in the money during his impressive five-year racing career.

Pound for Pound was the first stakes winner by his multiple graded stakes winning sire Redding Colliery. A son of Mineshaft, Redding Colliery successfully campaigned in North America, the United Kingdom, and Dubai and at the end of his career had collected five triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures.

Pound for Pound is out of two-time Louisiana Broodmare of the Year (2017 and 2021) Buttercup's Song. A daughter of Unbridled's Song, she has produced more than $1.7 million in progeny earnings with 10 winners from 10 starters. She is the dam of three stakes winners including multiple stakes winner Flatlined – the winner of the Grade 2 Fort Lauderdale Stakes, the Cliff Guilliams Handicap, and the Old Friends Stakes.

Classic Winner Arcangelo To Stand At Lane’s End Upon Retirement

Upon the conclusion of his racing career, multiple Grade 1 winner and leading contender for champion 3-year-old colt, Arcangelo will enter stud at Lane's End Farm.

Campaigned by Jon Ebbert's Blue Rose Farm and trained by Jena Antonucci, Arcangelo has remained undefeated since breaking his maiden in March in a one-mile Gulfstream Park maiden special weight by 3 1/2 lengths.

He prevailed in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park, edging out favorite Bishops Bay and earning a 97 Beyer in his stakes debut. He then followed in the path of A. P. Indy and Tonalist by annexing the Belmont Stakes defeating five Grade 1 winners, including champion 2-year-old Forte. Arcangelo earned a 102 Beyer – the highest of the year for a 3-year-old in the country at 1 1/2 miles – and made Jena Antonucci the first female trainer to win a Triple Crown race.

Arcangelo followed up his break-out performance in the Belmont with a win in the G1 Travers at Saratoga, just like his sire Arrogate, boosting his career earnings to $1,754,900. Defeating both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners, he earned a 105 Beyer, the top figure for a 3-year-old at 1 1/4 miles.  This performance propelled him to the top of the three-year-old division, making him the likely favorite for the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic.

“It has been a surreal experience to own a horse of this magnitude. The day I laid eyes on him at the yearling sale, I said to myself that this is the most beautiful horse I have ever seen. I'm so blessed the way everything unfolded and so appreciative of my team. To win the Belmont, the Travers and looking as the possible favorite in the Breeders' Cup is incredible. From the beginning of this journey, I tried to make every right decision for this horse, and now I have another important one to make. Upon his retirement, I've chosen Lane's End as the perfect fit for his stallion career,” said Jon Ebbert.

“Having the opportunity to steward Arcangelo thus far in his racing career has been the absolute blessing of a lifetime, for which I will be eternally grateful for. Watching him grow into his mental and physical greatness has been remarkable. We will be excited to see the talent of his progeny and watching Arcangelo pass along his innate ability, talent, and desire to be a champion,” said Jena Antonucci.

By champion Arrogate, the sire of five Grade 1 winners in his brief career at stud, Arcangelo was bred by Don Alberto Corporation. His dam Modeling, by Tapit, was a $2.85 million Keeneland November broodmare purchase. Modeling is a half-sister to Streaming, winner of the G1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes. She hails from the family of Broodmare of the Year and prolific producer Better Than Honour, the dam of back-to-back Belmont winners Rags to Riches and Jazil.

“Arcangelo's historic three-year-old campaign fits a profile that we are very familiar with on our stallion roster,” said Lane's End's Bill Farish, “There's no doubt that Arrogate's brief career at stud has had a major impact on racing, and the opportunity to stand a classic winning son of his with such a deep pedigree makes Arcangelo an exciting and unique prospect for Lane's End.”

Copper Tax Becomes First Stakes Winner For Darby Dan Farm’s Copper Bullet

Copper Tax made his stakes debut a winning one on Saturday when taking down top prize in the $100,000 Rocky Run Stakes for 2-year-olds at Delaware Park and becoming the first stakes winner for Darby Dan Farm's freshman sire Copper Bullet.

In winning his fourth consecutive race in front-running fashion, Copper Tax set all the pace in the one-mile fixture. He led the field under a strong hold up the backstretch and into the far turn, then drew off from his rivals to score by 6¾ lengths over the muddy (sealed) track.

Owned by Rose Petal Stable and trained by Gary Capuano, Copper Tax was produced from the stakes-placed Majestic Warrior mare Wilhelmina, a half-sister to Venezuelan champion sprinter Strength Mask (VEN). Copper Tax was a $45,000 acquisition at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale.

Copper Bullet, a graded stakes-winning juvenile and multiple graded stakes-placed son of More Than Ready, was a dominating four-length winner of the 2017 Saratoga Special (G2). An impressive eight-length maiden special weight winner at Churchill Downs in just his second career start for Steve Asmussen, Copper Bullet was named a TDN Rising Star off the eye-catching performance. In addition to his sensational juvenile season, in which he also finished second in the Bashford Manor (G3) at Churchill Downs, Copper Bullet went on to place in the Razorback Handicap (G3) behind multiple graded stakes winner Coal Front at Oaklawn Park as a 4-year-old en route to banking $339,345.

Copper Bullet's first three crops are the product of hand-selected matings with strict criteria: age, race record, family, production, pedigree, and conformation. The resulting offspring caught the eye at public auction this year with Copper Bullet's first 2-year-olds commanding up to $275,000, $260,000, and $175,000.

A $200,000 Keeneland September purchase by Winchell Thoroughbreds, Copper Bullet was bred in Kentucky by Dell Ridge Farm.
