Into Mischief, American Pharoah Among U.S. Sires With Offspring In Dubai Breeze Sale

There are 69 horses that have arrived in Dubai ahead of the first ever Dubai Breeze-up Sale, set for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The two-year-olds hail from many of the leading breeze-up consignors in Ireland and the UK, and the sires represented include American Pharoah, Arrogate, Curlin, Dark Angel, Dubawi, Exceed And Excel, Frankel, Gun Runner, Into Mischief, Invincible Spirit, Justify, Kodiac, Kingman, Lope De Vega, Mehmas, More Than Ready, Night Of Thunder, Pioneerof the Nile, Showcasing, Siyouni, Starspangledbanner, Uncle Mo, and Wootton Bassett.

A name that jumps immediately off the page is that of Polar River, winner of both the listed UAE 1000 Guineas and UAE Oaks (G3) in 2016. Her second foal, a colt by American Pharoah, is cataloged as Lot 36.

Peeping Fawn was a wonderful runner for trainer Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore, collecting the Irish Oaks (G1) among her four top-flight victories. She is represented by Lot 31, a colt by Daiwa Major.

Hawkbill, a son of Kitten's Joy, won on 10 occasions for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby, highlighted by the 2016 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and 2018 Sheema Classic at Meydan, both Group 1 events. His three-parts brother, by Kitten's Joy from the unraced Hard Spun mare Hard Cloth, is another to catch the eye, going through as Lot 22.

Given the ongoing continued success of his stock worldwide and especially in the UAE, the only offering by Dubawi, a filly, will surely be eagerly awaited. She is a half-sister to a winner out of Joyful Hope, a listed winner herself and full sister to Italian Derby (G1) victor Crackerjack King. They are also half-siblings to Group 1 winners Jakkalberry and Awelmarduk.

There is also a Maclean's Music half-brother to Grade 1 winners Majestic Harbor and Danza, as well as a Dark Angel half-brother to the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Tarnawa and a Sea The Moon filly who is closely related to Stradivarius.

Impressing during morning training has been Lot 1, a good-looking son of Gun Runner out of Grade 2 winner Bank Audit. He is consigned by Mickey Cleere of MC Thoroughbreds, who has three in the sale.

“We have three really nice horses; a Gun Runner colt, a Raven's Pass colt (Lot 5) and an Into Mischief filly, (Lot 67)” he said. “The flight and preparations have gone very well and we haven't done much differently to if it was a normal breeze-up sale, taking place later in April or May.

“This is a great idea and I hope it is a successful sale for everybody.”

Former jockey Eddie Ahern consigns Lot 41, a colt by Showcasing out of U.S. Grade 1 winner Rosinka, who he rode himself on Monday morning to help the youngster get a feel for the track.

“Everything has gone very well and the horses all seem to have settled in nicely,” he said. “Showcasing has had success in Dubai and this lad is a nice type so we're hoping for a good sale.”

Goffs' International Client Relations Consultant, Tom Taaffe, in Dubai to organize the sale commented:  “All of the horses have arrived and are stabled at Nofa Quarantine, where it is nice and quiet. They are using the first two days for some gentle exercise on the Tapeta track before the breeze on Tuesday. So far everything has gone smoothly and we are very happy.  We've had a lot of interest from buyers already and look forward to seeing everyone here on Tuesday and Wednesday.”

The breeze takes place on Tuesday, March 22 at 7:45 a.m. on the training track and the sale takes place on Wednesday, March 23, at 5 p.m. in the parade ring at Meydan Racecourse. Potential purchasers intending to bid, whether in person or online using the GoffsOnline.com platform, are required to register with Dubai Racing Club in advance.

King For A Day, Lookin At Lee Lead Youth Movement At Irish Hill And Dutchess Views Stallions

Keeping a roster replenished with fresh faces is a must in today's commercial Thoroughbred marketplace. Buyers at auction have shown they'll flock to them in the sales ring, and breeders have taken note with their mating choices.

Irish Hill and Dutchess Views Stallions in Stillwater N.Y., understood that market edict and stocked its stud barn accordingly, with a pair of stallions seeing their first foals born in 2022: Kentucky Derby runner-up Lookin At Lee and Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner King for a Day.

Both stallions received a solid base of broodmare support from breeders in 2021, and now that they're in the midst of their second seasons at stud, stallion manager Bill Leak said they each have solid foundations to compete for spots among New York's top sires in the years to come.

“I've always felt there's been room for the right horse in this state all the way through,” he said. “They've both been received very well in the state, and we think they'll have the opportunity to do it, because we do think they are the right horses.”

King for a Day, a 6-year-old son of Uncle Mo, covered 73 mares in his debut season, which was the fifth-most among New York stallions in 2021, and third-highest among first-year stallions.

He is best known for chasing down eventual champion 3-year-old male Maximum Security in the listed Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park, following a victory in the Sir Barton Stakes at Pimlico. He also added a runner-up effort in the Grade 3 Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, retiring with three wins in seven starts for $260,550.

“You don't get any hotter than Uncle Mo right now, with him having three of the four top freshman sires in 2020,” Leak said. “King for a Day is the typical Uncle Mo: a lot of leg, stands very tall, and he stands downhill. He looks like he's ready to go forward constantly, even when he's standing still. He looks like he's ready to go, and that's just how he's built, even though his frame is very balanced. He just looks like speed. All the positives of Uncle Mo are in King for a Day.”

A homebred for the Brunetti family's Red Oak Stable, King for a Day is out of the French Deputy mare Ubetwereven, whose other runners of note include stakes winners Ima Jersey Girl and Feel That Fire. The latter is the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Mind Control.

Rick Burke, owner of Irish Hill Century Farm, said the horse's connections approached the farm about standing King for a Day in New York.

“They felt he was a better fit here than trying to go to Kentucky,” Burke said. “They thought there was enough Uncle Mo sons out there with Nyquist, Outwork, and Laoban, they didn't want to try to start another one at the same time. They thought it was a better fit to come to New York.”

Lookin At Lee, an 8-year-old by Lookin At Lucky, saw 22 reported mares in his debut season, which ranked him 13th among the state's most active stallions.

“He's more of a classic-looking horse,” Leak said. “He's got the classic angles, the classic lines, very well balanced, not too leggy, not too short, good, long back. It all fits perfectly for the classic distance.”

Lookin At Lee was competitive against the top 3-year-olds of the 2017 racing season. In addition to finishing second to Always Dreaming in that year's Kentucky Derby (G1), he also registered in-the-money efforts in the G1 Arkansas Derby, and the G3 West Virginia Derby and G1 Southwest Stakes. He also missed picking up black type in that year's Preakness Stakes by a half-length, finishing fourth.

At two, Lookin At Lee won the Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes and was second in the G1 Breeders' Futurity and G3 Iroquois Stakes. He retired with four wins in 35 starts and earnings of $1,343,188.

“If he'd won the Derby, he wouldn't be here,” Burke said. “I would say breaking from the one-hole against all those horses, to come in second was a phenomenal ride. That's why he's here. He just didn't win one of those big races.”

Unlike King for a Day, Burke said he reached out to owner L and N Racing to pitch them about standing Lookin At Lee in New York.

“When I'd heard he was retiring to stud and his owners didn't think he would be as well received in Kentucky as a regional market, I called them and they agreed New York was the place to go, with the purse structure and the breeders' awards,” he said. “The nice thing with these two stallions is the owners race horses in New York, so they want to be in New York, running at Saratoga and Belmont, so that does help in attracting stallions.”

Lookin At Lee is out of the Grade 3-placed stakes-winning Langfuhr mare Langara Lass, whose produce record also includes multiple Grade 3 winner Blended Citizen and Grade 1-placed stakes winner Battlefield Angel, who is also a stakes-producing mare.

“Every mare that we got to our stallions last year felt like a win,” Leak said. “We had to fight hard for every mare, and we're thankful that we got them, and I thought they both performed very well.”

Authentic’s Foal Derby: Proving Out Pages In Week 4 Matchup

The first foals by Spendthrift Farm's Horse of the Year Authentic have begun to arrive, and to celebrate, Spendthrift is hosting a “Foal Derby” to share photos of the stallion's debut crop and reward breeders and fans with prizes.

Each week leading up to the Kentucky Derby, a group of Authentic's foals will be displayed on Spendthrift Farm's social media channels. The two foals with the most likes and shares will face off in the finals each Friday to decide the favorite. Both finalists will then be among 20 horses eligible to win the grand prizes, based on the results of this year's Kentucky Derby. Voters will also be eligible for weekly prizes.

To learn more about the rules and prizes for both breeders and voters, click here.

Authentic, a 5-year-old son of Into Mischief, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $70,000. He was named Horse of the Year in 2020, following a campaign that saw him earn Grade 1 victories in the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup Classic, and Haskell Stakes.

This week's finalists each come from mares whose first foals are 2-year-olds or younger, meaning their Authentic foals could likely go a long way in defining the direction of their respective produce records in the years to come.

Let's take a look at this week's finalists…

Foal: Filly o/o Smooth Path

Bred by: Grantley Acres

The second foal out of the unraced Scat Daddy mare Smooth Path, who is herself a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Taraz (by Into Mischief). The filly's third dam is the English Group 1-placed stakes winner Jibe, out of the blue hen producer Slightly Dangerous. Jibe's siblings include European champion Commander in Chief, two-time English champion Warning, Group 2 winner and leading Chilean sire Dushyantor, and Irish classic-placed Deploy.

“She's good-sized, great bone to her,” said Grantley Acres farm manager Suzanne Watkins. “The mare has really thrown a lot in her. She's well put together, correct through her legs. I don't foresee any conformational issues going forward. I think she'll be one of those that progresses smoothly.

“Carl (McEntee, Grantley Acres bloodstock adviser) and Geoff Nixon (owner of Grantley Acres) do the matings, and Geoff picks a lot of them himself,” she continued. “I think they were just trying to get to a young sire, and he does a really good job of picking his matings. The two of them really work well together on picking the best crosses for these mares. She just seemed to fit Authentic best of all of this group.

“I really enjoy this mare's pedigree,” Watkins said. “I spotted this mare in the January sale, and pointed her out to Geoff because I'd delivered her dam and granddam. That goes back to Prince Khalid's foundation families, so to me, it's fantastic to see those families continue and feel like they're part of his legacy.”

Foal: Colt o/o Munny Spunt

Bred by: Mountmellick Farm

The third foal out of the Grade 3-winning Munnings mare Munny Spunt. His extended family includes Grade 2 winner Blues Street, as well as Storm Street, who was Trinidad and Tobago's Horse of the Year in 2008.
