Qatar Racing To Hold Competition To Name Colt By Roaring Lion

Roaring Lion's sole crop will be seen on the racecourse for the first time this year and a lucky winner will have the unique opportunity to name a 2-year-old colt by the late world champion 3-year-old and 2018 Cartier Horse of the Year.

The colt by Roaring Lion out of Assembly (by Candy Ride) is in training with Joseph O'Brien and is one of 33 Qatar Racing-owned juveniles by Roaring Lion in training this season. The striking bay has an entry in the 2023 Epsom Derby, alongside 23 other colts by the four-time Group 1 winning stallion.

The competition winner will be selected by Sheikh Fahad, chairman of Qatar Racing, and David Redvers, Qatar Racing's racing manager and owner of Tweenhills. The prize will include two tickets for the opening day of the QIPCO Guineas Festival on Friday, April 29 2022.

David Redvers said:

“The colt out of Assembly was born at Tweenhills and has been a pleasure to watch him grow and progress at the farm. Like Roaring Lion himself he is a fantastic mover, a trait we have seen a lot of in his progeny.  It is exciting to see how he develops now that he is in training with Joseph O'Brien.

“Roaring Lion was a very special horse for Sheikh Fahad, his brothers and the Qatar Racing operation and we look forward to seeing his sole crop on the track this year.

“The name should reflect Roaring Lion's legacy and the colt's high-quality pedigree. We look forward to going through the entries. Fingers crossed – you could be naming a future champion.”

How to enter:

  1. Follow Qatar Racing on social media
  2. Reply to any of the social media posts with your name suggestion
  3. Names must be clean and no longer than 18 characters
  4. Entries open Monday, March 28 and close midnight Sunday, April 3.

Uncle Mo Colt Clocks Fastest Breeze Show Time In Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale History

Monday's under-tack show for the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Selected Sale Of 2-Year-Olds In Training saw the fastest time for an eighth of a mile since the boutique auction moved to Gulfstream Park in 2015.

The time was achieved by Hip 96, an Uncle Mo colt who stopped the clock in :9 3/5 seconds, eclipsing the previous record of :9 4/5 seconds, which has been achieved five times.

The bay colt is out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Brusquer, whose first foal to race is a winner. Brusquer is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and record-setting commercial sire Tapit, which also puts this colt in a family that includes champions Rubiano and Summer Bird, notable sire Glitterman, and Grade 2 winner Madefromlucky.

Wavertree Stables consigned the Kentucky-bred colt, as agent.

Two other colts breezed an eighth in :9 4/5 seconds on Monday.

Hip 62 is a colt out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Soul Crusader, whose three foals to race are all winners, including the stakes-placed There Goes Harvard, by Will Take Charge. The California-bred colt hails from the family of Grade 1 winners Killer Graces and Killer Ability, and Grade 2 winner Chocolate Ride.

Classic Bloodstock consigns Hip 62, as agent.

Hip 100 is a first-crop City of Light colt out of the placed Dixie Union mare Cool Flame. His third dam is the multiple Grade 1 winner Raging Fever, putting him in the extended family of Grade 3 winner Stormin Fever and Grade 3-placed stakes winner Roaring Fever, both of which are sires.

Top Line Sales consigns the colt, as agent.

Monday's fastest time at a quarter-mile came from Hip 48, a first-crop Bolt d'Oro filly who crossed the line in :20 2/5 seconds.

The bay filly is out of the winning Not For Love mare Rich Love, whose four foals to race are all winners. The Kentucky-bred filly's page features Grade 1 winner Bounding Basque and Grade 2 winner Northern Soldier.
