We have canvassed the spectrum of equestrian industry disciplines since announcing the intent to sell and as a result we are engaged in various discussions with prospects regarding new ownership. However, my mandate is to first explore and exhaust all interest and opportunities from global racing entities and identities in selecting the next steward.”

Texas Thoroughbred Association Clarifies Status Of Auctions As HISA Conflict Continues

The Texas Thoroughbred Association released an email to the state's horsemen on Thursday clarifying the status for several aspects of racing and breeding in the state, in the event the Texas Racing Commission goes through with its plan to refuse compliance with the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority after the July 1 deadline.

Among the topics in the email was how the decision might affect future TTA auctions. The Texas Summer Yearling Sale will take place Monday, Aug. 29 at Lone Star Park, and the TTA also hosts a 2-year-olds in training sale in the spring at the same track.

Following is the portion of the TTA's email that pertained to its auctions:

“For our August 2022 Yearling Sale, there is no HISA impact whatsoever on our sale or for our consignors. Neither sales horses nor persons working or attending the sales need to be registered with HISA.

“We've also had contact from some of our 2-year-old sales consignors. We've been told by HISA officials that 2-year-old sales horses and those working or attending those sales are NOT considered 'covered' under HISA rules. Therefore, we've been told there is no need to register.

“As of today, this is what we've been told relating to sales. The racing at Lone Star Park's 2022 Thoroughbred meet will continue through the scheduled end of the meet and on track/in-state wagering will continue. “

Tattersalls To Introduce Select ‘Sceptre Session’ At December Mares Sale

Tattersalls is to introduce a new select session, named the 'Sceptre Session', which will headline the Tuesday of the Tattersalls December Sale and showcase the highest quality race fillies and broodmares to be offered for sale in Europe.

The select 'Sceptre Session' takes its name from the great race filly Sceptre who was the only horse ever to win four classics outright, and was herself sold for a record 10,000 guineas at Tattersalls in 1900. The 'Sceptre Session' will feature up to 75 elite fillies and mares focussing on high class racing prospects and well – covered, well bred broodmares with pedigrees which will appeal to the international buyers who annually descend upon Tattersalls Park Paddocks for Europe's premier sale of breeding stock.

The all new 'Sceptre Session' will be the highlight of day two of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale which has traditionally featured the most coveted fillies and mares at the four day finale to the Tattersalls sales season. Notably, the highest priced Thoroughbred ever sold at European public auction was Marsha whose 6 million guineas price tag was the extraordinary climax of the 2017 December Mares Tuesday session which in a run of 75 lots saw 10 lots sold for 1 million guineas or more and a further 11 sold for between 500,000 and a million guineas.

Commenting on the new initiative, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“Sceptre was one of the most outstanding fillies ever to grace the turf and is inextricably linked with the rich history of Tattersalls and specifically Somerville Tattersall who himself owned the great mare for a short while. The new 'Sceptre Session' will feature the very best race fillies and broodmares and add a new dimension to a sale which is already long established as the most prestigious showcase of world class breeding stock in Europe.”

Simon Marsh, General Manager of Lord and Lady Lloyd – Webber's Watership Down Stud, added his praise saying;

“Over the last 30 years Watership Down Stud has purchased some of its most important mares at the Tattersalls December Sale including Sumoto, the granddam of champion racefilly The Fugue and Gale Force, the dam of 2021 Classic winner Hurricane Lane. So many legendary broodmares have been purchased at the Tattersalls December Sale and the new 'Sceptre Session' will undoubtedly capture the imagination of breeders from throughout the world.”

On Saturday evening, Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association secretary/treasurer Roger Heitzmann announced the Louisiana 2021 Horse of the Year, Cilla, who was selected from among the Louisiana divisional champions by the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association Board of Directors.

Cilla, is proof positive that Louisiana-breds can compete among top company anywhere.

After winning the 2021 Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle at Evangeline Downs in June, Cilla took her show on the road to Monmouth Park where she annexed the Blue Sparkler Stakes getting the five and a half furlongs in 1:03.07 to win by 2 1/2 lengths. Next,  Cilla won the Grade 2 Prioress Stakes at Saratoga, running the six furlongs in 1:10.05, defeating Kentucky-bred Grade 3 winner Souper Sensational. Cilla was both the first North American, winner and first black type winner for her sire, two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome.

Brett Brinkman trains Cilla for owner P. Dale Ladner. The same connections bred her and raced her dam, Sittin at the Bar. Sittin at the Bar won 11 of 19 starts including nine Louisiana-bred stakes during her career earning $705,896. and has produced nothing but runners.

Cilla, whose name in Welsh means “venerable,” is certainly fulfilling her namesake. In 2022, she has added stakes wins in the Orleans Stakes and LA Bred Premier Matron,  both run at Delta Downs. Cilla's lifetime earnings sit at $484,000 with more to come.
