Mr. Freeze Retired To Raimonde Farms In Ohio

Multiple graded stakes winner Mr. Freeze has been retired to stud at Raimonde Farms Ltd. in Wooster, Ohio.

Owned by Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister and trained by Dale Romans, the 7-year-old son of To Honor and Serve retired with a 6-4-2 record in nineteen starts, earning $1,595,600 over his career. Romans was thrilled to find a good fit for the stallion.

“He was a gifted horse with a great mind,” he said. “He ran with the best and we couldn't be happier about this opportunity.”

Mr. Freeze retires to Ohio as a result of a deal brokered by Paul Devine of Devine Line Stables, an advocate for the Ohio Thoroughbred breeding industry.

“I was looking for a talented, durable runner with a tremendous female family,” Devine said. “Mr. Freeze certainly fit those requirements. Not only did Mr. Freeze win almost $1.6 million dollars on the track, but he is also a beautiful horse, and I think Ohio breeders will be very pleased when they see him.”

As he prepares the stallion for the 2023 breeding season, Raimonde Farms' Brian Raimonde is hopeful about his prospects.

“I'm always looking for quality additions to my stallion roster, and given his success on the dirt, Mr. Freeze fits perfectly into Ohio's program,” Raimonde said. “It's rare to find a stallion prospect that maintained his form so long into his career, winning graded stakes at ages three, four, and five.”

Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners executive director Mike Annechino echoed that sentiment.

“The OTBO is excited to welcome Mr. Freeze to an outstanding group of stallions already resident in Ohio,” Annechino said. “The state's stallions anchor the Ohio accredited program, which offers 14 dedicated stakes (worth over $1 million) strictly for horses sired by Ohio stallions and born in the state. Ohio-accredited horses can also run in the 29 Ohio-bred stakes with purses in excess of $2.9 million. “

Mr. Freeze broke his maiden on first asking at age three at Keeneland and won his next allowance race at Churchill Downs before a runner-up performance in the Iowa Derby in only his third start in the summer of 2018. His first stakes win came a month later in the Grade 3 West Virginia Derby that August.

From there, the colt collected graded stakes wins in the 2019 G3 Ack Ack at Churchill Downs, the 2020 G2 Gulfstream Park Mile and the 2020 G2 Fayette Stakes at Keeneland. Also notable, Mr. Freeze finished in the money with a second in the 2020 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes and a third in the 2020 G2 Oaklawn Handicap.

Bred in Kentucky by Siena Farms LLC, Mr Freeze is out of the Tabasco Cat mare Heavenly Cat.

Brentley, First Son Of Untapable, Sold To Stand In Peru

Brentley, the first foal out of champion mare Untapable, has been sold to begin his stud career at Haras Boucle in Peru during this year's Southern Hemisphere breeding season, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 4-year-old son of Frankel raced five times over the turf in Texas, breaking his maiden in his fifth and final start going 1 1/16 miles at Lone Star Park.

Brentley raced as a homebred for Winchell Thoroughbreds, and he was trained by Steve Asmussen; the same connections that campaigned Untapable to the Eclipse Award for champion 3-year-old filly and a win in the Breeders' Cup Distaff in 2014.

The stallion's second dam is the Prized mare Fun House, who was named Broodmare of the Year in 2014, with a produce record that also includes Grade 1 winner Paddy O'Prado.

In addition to Brentley, Untapable has an unnamed 3-year-old colt by Frankel, and a yearling colt by Gun Runner.

Competitive Edge Filly Tops 2022 Minnesota Yearling Sale

A filly by Competitive Edge helped drive gains in gross and average sale price on Sunday during the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association Yearling Sale.

A total of 25 Minnesota-bred yearlings changed hands during the auction for revenues of $385,600, up from last year's auction, when 28 horses brought a combined $383,500. The average sale price rose to $15,424 from $13,696, while the median declined to $6,000 from $9,000.

Kerri Raven purchased the sale-topping Competitive Edge filly for $70,000.

The dark bay or brown filly, named Grandma's Prodigy, is the third foal out of the stakes-winning Dazzling Falls mare Dazzlingsweetheart. Grade 3 winner He's Vivacious is in the Minnesota-bred's extended family, along with Minnesota stakes winners Plana Dance, Heliskier, and Gypsy Melody.

Grandma's Prodigy was consigned by Von Seggern Thoroughbreds & Etc., as agent for Mary and Eric Von Seggern.

The Von Seggern operation was the sale's leading consignor, with combined revenues of $130,000.

Xtreme Racing Stables was the leading buyer, with three purchases totaling $113,000. The most expensive horse in that slate was a Tapiture gelding named Tappin the Blues, also from the Von Seggern consignment, who was secured for $60,000.

Fasig-Tipton August Digital Sale Features Partial Reduction Of Lovacres Ranch

Fasig-Tipton's upcoming August Digital Selected Sale will feature a partial reduction of Terry Lovingier's Lovacres Ranch. The August Digital Selected Sale will be conducted on digital.fasigtipton.com from August 25-30.

The Lovacres offerings consist of 31 broodmares or broodmare prospects, and seven horses of racing age. Included among these are broodmare prospect Fi Fi Pharoah, a stakes winning daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Headlining the horses of racing age is E Z Pharis, a stakes performing two-year-old daughter of American Pharoah. Following an impressive debut win at Santa Anita on April 30, she earned black type with a strong third in the Fasig-Tipton Debutante S. on June 18 at Santa Anita.

Terry Lovingier and his Southern California-based Lovacres Ranch have been at the forefront of California racing and breeding for many years. Lovingier has bred or owned in partnership nine California-bred Champions. Last year was an especially banner year for the program, as Lovingier campaigned both the Champion California-bred Two-Year-Old Male and Female in Finneus and At the Spa, respectively, in partnership. The program was also named Champion Breeder of California Foaled Thoroughbreds by Earnings; owned Broodmare of the Year My Fiona in partnership; and claimed Champion First-Crop Sire of California by Earnings honors for stallion Govenor Charlie.

Lovacres currently stands seven stallions, including Stay Thirsty, California's leading sire of 2018, 2019, and 2021. Also the state's current leading sire in 2022, Stay Thirsty is represented as covering sire of several mares being offered as part of the Lovacres reduction.

“I love horse racing,” said Lovingier. “I'm not going anywhere, but the with the success of Stay Thirsty I just need to make room for more outside mares at the farm. This reduction is necessary to expand boarding and breeding opportunities for clients of Lovacres.”

“The Lovacres racing and breeding program has raised and campaigned many of the top horses in the California-bred program,” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton's Director of Digital Sales. “This partial reduction gives buyers access to a program with a tremendous track record of success.”

Fasig-Tipton's August Digital Selected Sale opens for bidding this coming Thursday, August 25 and closes on Tuesday, August 30. In addition to the Lovacres offerings, there are currently an additional 27 entries of breeding stock and horses of racing age that will be offered in the catalogue.
