Include, a venerable part of the Airdrie Stud stallion roster for nearly two decades, was euthanized July 18 due to complications from a long-running heart condition, Thoroughbred Daily News reports.

The 25-year-old son of Broad Brush had been residing at Airdrie as a pensioner since last fall after his heart condition was discovered. He'd stood at the Midway, Ky., farm since entering stud in 2003, with frequent shuttle trips to Argentina for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. He was that country's leading sire in 2015.

Born in Maryland, Include racked up victories in the Grade 1 Pimlico Special Handicap and G2 Massachusetts Handicap and New Orleans Handicap. He was named Marlyand's Horse of the Year in 2001, and he retired with 10 wins in 20 starts for earnings of $1,659,560.

Saranac Winner Annapolis Among Three Stakes Winners Saturday For War Front

Claiborne Farm's resident stallion War Front continued to enhance his profile as a renowned international sire with a trio of stakes winners globally Saturday, including Annapolis, who took the Saranac (G3) at Saratoga.

The 20-year-old son of Danzig also had a pair stakes winners in Australia and France.

A 3-year-old colt out of My Miss Sophia, by Unbridled's Song, Annapolis romped gate to wire in the Saranac, notching a 5 ½ length triumph as the overwhelming favorite in the race for 3-year-olds.

A Bass Racing homebred trained by Todd Pletcher, Annapolis covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:52.47 on firm turf with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, earning his second graded victory following the 2021 Pilgrim (G2) at Belmont Park. He improved his overall record to 4-2-0 from six starts, including his runner-up finish in the Saratoga Derby Invitational (G1) August 6 at the Spa.

War Front  was represented in Australia on Saturday by Phoenix Thoroughbred's Cadre Du Noir, who won the Tattersalls Club Cup going about 1 ½ miles at Royal Randwick, also by more than five lengths.

A $1.1 million purchase by Kerri Radcliffe Bloodstock at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Cadre Du Noir is out of the Rahy mare Dynamic Feature and thus a half brother to multiple graded stakes winner Parranda, who placed three times at the Grade 1 level. This is the family of Grade 1 winner Dixie Brass. A 6-year-old horse, Cadre Du Noir was bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock LLC, Denny Andrews, and  Crockett Farm.

In France, War Front's 3-year-old filly Sippinsoda won the listed Prix Occitanie at La Teste de Buch.

Ridden by Cristian Demuro for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget, Sippinsoda won by a quarter length and finished 1,900 meters in 1:57.78 on good turf.

Owned by Ecurie Melanie who bred the filly in France with Ecurie Haras du Cadran, Sippinsoda was produced by Let's Misbehave, by Montjeu. She sold to Jean-Michel Lefebvre for $235,477 from Cadran's consignment at the 2020 Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale.

War Front, sire of eight champions, 23 Grade 1 winners, and 105 stakes winners, stood in 2022 for an advertised fee of $100,000 at the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky.

Ontario Mare Purchase Program Foal Among Sales Leaders At Canadian Premier Yearling Sale

Foals out of dams purchased through Ontario Racing's Thoroughbred Improvement Program's innovative Mare Purchase Program (MPP) were hot commodities at the 2022 Canadian Premier Yearling Sale on Aug. 31, including Hip 48, one of three yearlings to hammer for over $100,000.

Hip 48's dam Zee Ro Drop was purchased in-foal to Palace Malice by Jeremia Rudan's Villa Rosa Farm for $40,000 USD at the 2021 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.

“I bought Zee Ro Drop with a partner of mine, Steve Kemp from Ballycroy Training Centre,” said Rudan. “We partnered on her, and we went down and shopped, and we found her. She was a big, pretty mare.”

The grey or roan colt Zee Ro Drop produced sold for $102,000 CDN on Wednesday at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's annual yearling sale.

Through the MPP, Villa Rosa Farm was reimbursed $15,000 CAD when purchasing Zee Ro Drop. The amount has since been increased to a maximum of $25,000 CAD for up to 50 percent of the purchase price of an in-foal mare at any recognized public auction outside of Ontario.

“I wouldn't be buying in-foal mares if not for the program,” said Rudan. “It gives you a little bit of extra wiggle room to buy better mares. Especially with the exchange, the program certainly helps, and incentivizes you to do it.”

Rudan will continue using the MPP when he heads to the fall sales.

“The Ontario program is really getting good,” said Rudan. “The people I see in the states, they're seeing the Ontario Bred races, the incentives for Ontario Breds, and the breeding program. I think people are starting to bring better mares across and foal them out in Ontario and having them race in Ontario.”

Four other foals of mare purchased through the MPP went through the sales ring, and all sold above the median of $19,500.

Hip 139: A bay Hard Spun colt out of Isabel's On It (GB) sold for $50,000. Isabel's On It (GB) was brought to Ontario as part of the 2021 Mare Purchase Program by Spring Farm as a $32,000 USD purchase at Keeneland November 2020.

Hip 79: A dark bay or brown Yoshida (JPN) colt out of CC's Joy sold for $46,000. CC's Joy was brought to Ontario as part of the 2021 Mare Purchase Program by Jesse Korona as a $18,000 USD purchase at Keeneland January 2021.

Hip 148: A dark bay or brown Outwork colt out of Kin's Ghost also sold for $46,000. Kin's Ghost was brought to Ontario as part of the 2021 Mare Purchase Program by Phoenix Rising Farm as a $15,000 USD purchase at Keeneland November 2020.

Hip 105: A bay Always Dreaming filly out of Fallen Leaf sold for $22,000. Always Dreaming was brought to Ontario as part of the 2021 Mare Purchase Program by Dr. B. Van Arem as a $50,000 USD at Keeneland January 2021.

Anchor Down Colt Tops Record-Setting Iowa Fall Sale

A colt by recently relocated Iowa sire Anchor Down drew the highest bid on Thursday at the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Fall Sale, propelling all-time high returns for the auction.

A total of 55 horses changed hands on Thursday for revenues of $810,900, more than double last year's gross of $402,350. The gross surpassed the previous high-water mark of $475,000 in 2017.

The average sale price of $14,743 was also a record performance, besting last year's previous high mark of $11,176. The median price finished at $8,000.

Albaugh Family Stables and Allen Poindexter partnered up to purchase the sale-topper, a colt by Anchor Down, for $60,000.

The Iowa-bred chestnut colt is out of the winning Bwana Charlie mare Damaris, whose first foal to race is a winner. His extended family includes Grade 2 winners Aspen Rose and Kyle's Our Man, as well as Grade 3 winner Low Tolerance.

Iowa State University consigned the sale-topper as agent for Poindexter. Anchor Down relocated to Iowa State for the 2022 breeding season after beginning his stud career in Kentucky at Gainesway.

The university program was also the sale's leading consignor by gross, with 26 horses bringing a combined $521,200.

The partnership of Chleborad, Prairie Gold Diggers, and Poindexter was the top buyer, with five purchases totaling $138,000. Leading their haul was Hip 59, an Anchor Down filly out of the Consolidator mare Solid Scam, who hammered for $37,000.
