Darley America Announces 2023 Stallion Roster, Including Newcomers Speaker’s Corner, Mystic Guide

A total of 11 stallions will stand at Darley's Jonabell Farm in 2023, including two new additions: G1 winners Speaker's Corner and Mystic Guide. Fee and retirement plans for G1 Forego winner and future Darley stallion Cody's Wish will be made after the Breeders' Cup.

Darley Sales Manager, Darren Fox, said, “We've been very fortunate in the last two years to have produced five high-level performers and it's even more gratifying that they are all homebreds. Following last year's retirement of Essential Quality and Maxfield, to again be able to add more top-caliber horses is very, very exciting.”

Speaker's Corner retires as the fastest son of Street Sense with a top Beyer Speed Figure of 114. Bred along the same cross as fellow Darley stallion Maxfield, he is out of the Bernardini mare Tyburn Brook, a daughter of Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Round Pond. As a juvenile, he won an especially hot maiden race at Belmont that featured five future Stakes winners, including Graded winners Greatest Honour and Bourbonic, plus Arkansas Derby runner-up Caddo River.

At three, he posted three of his seven career triple-digit Beyers, including a 109 at Belmont which equaled the top Beyer earned last year by all three 2021 Eclipse Champion three-year-old male finalists: Life is Good, Essential Quality and Medina Spirit.

At four, he won his first three starts, all Graded Stakes, including the G1 Carter Handicap where he registered a 114 Beyer. Only Flightline has recorded a higher number in the past three years. Speaker's Corner also notched victories in the G2 Gulfstream Park Mile and the G3 Fred W. Hooper. He will enter his first season at stud at a fee of $20,000.

2021 Dubai World Cup winner Mystic Guide, whose retirement was announced earlier this year, will stand at a fee of $15,000 in 2023. Mystic Guide's four career victories also included the G2 Jim Dandy Stakes as a three-year-old, a race also won by current Darley stallions Medaglia d'Oro, Street Sense and Essential Quality.

Trained by Mike Stidham, Mystic Guide was never off the board in nine career starts. He served notice that he was prepared to take on the world's best in Meydan's signature $12,000,000 race when annexing the G3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn by six lengths while posting a 108 Beyer. Following his victory in Dubai, Mystic Guide was rated number one on both the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings and the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll.

Fox went on to say, “Optimism abounds currently in the Thoroughbred industry. The sales are strong, purses are strong, and close to home, we experienced unprecedented demand during the 2022 booking season. With all these positives, only one of our stallions will see a fee increase for 2023 and that's Midshipman, who continues to go from strength to strength in his stud career.”

Medaglia d'Oro's stud fee will be $100,000 for the second year in a row. He continues to produce runners at the highest level and is the sire of 22 Graded Stakes horses in 2022. Only Into Mischief has sired more this year. Medaglia d'Oro's top performers this year include Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty, now a winner of 21 of 24 career starts (and nearly $15 million in prize money), including six G1 victories.

Medaglia d'Oro remains poised to continue this success next year as his 2023 crop of juveniles is his best-bred crop ever. In the sales ring, his progeny once again attracted the attention of buyers exemplified by seven-figure offerings at the yearling and two-year-old sales in 2022.

The ultra-consistent Midshipman will see his fee rise to $20,000 for 2022. A perennial source of Stakes horses, his tally in this category is no fewer than 19 for 2022 and his 16% career Black Type horses to runners is among the best in the business. In fact, no stallion under $60k can top it.

Eclipse Champion Essential Quality and multiple G1 winner Maxfield will remain at $75,000 and $40,000 respectively for their second years at stud following full first-year books in 2022. Linchpin stallion Street Sense will also remain at $75,000 following yet another successful year both on the track and at the sales.

Spendthrift Farm Announces 2023 Roster, Including Four New Stallions

Spendthrift Farm has announced stud fees for its roster of 27 stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm for the upcoming 2023 breeding season, led again by North America's reigning three-time champion general sire, Into Mischief who will stand for $250,000 S&N.

Spendthrift has added four new stallions including 2022 multiple Grade 1 winners Jackie's Warrior and Cyberknife – both pointing for next month's Breeders' Cup – as well as 2022 classic winner Mo Donegal and the regally-bred Grade 2 winner Greatest Honour. Champion Jackie's Warrior and Cyberknife are set to retire at season's end, while Mo Donegal and Greatest Honour are available for inspection at the farm.

“We are extremely excited about the new stallions we are bringing in for 2023. They represent exactly what we hope to do each year, in terms of offering quality and value at all levels of the market,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “Jackie's Warrior is a brilliantly fast champion and one of the most decorated racehorses to come around in recent years. Mo Donegal is a graded winner at two and classic winner at three. Cyberknife won two of the most high-profile Grade 1s for 3-year-olds, and Greatest Honour has a rare combination of talent, looks and pedigree that you don't find often at his level of the market. From $50,000 on down to $7,500, all four of these horses were precocious, displayed immense talent, are tremendous physicals, and possess the sire power breeders are looking for.”

Jackie's Warrior, the reigning Champion Sprinter in North America, will be a favorite in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint Nov. 5 at Keeneland. The five-time Grade 1 winner became the first horse in the long history of Saratoga to win a Grade 1 in each of the last three years. Trained by Steve Asmussen for owners Kirk and Judy Robison, Jackie's Warrior has earned $2,779,164 to date and will retire as the most accomplished racehorse to date by Maclean's Music. Jackie's Warrior's will stand his first season for a fee of $50,000 S&N.

Cyberknife became the first multiple Grade 1-winning colt for his super-sire Gun Runner when he captured a couple of million-dollar Grade 1 races in 2022. Trained by Brad Cox, the 3-year-old scored a dominant victory in the G1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn this spring over eventual Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath and came back to defeat a star-studded field this summer in Monmouth's G1 Haskell Invitational, besting multiple Grade 1 winners Taiba and Jack Christopher. The chestnut colt has earned $1,917,520 to date for owner Al Gold's Gold Square, and he'll make his next start in either the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic or $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. His introductory fee will be determined and announced upon his retirement from racing.

Mo Donegal recently retired to Spendthrift after defeating probable champion Nest and Kentucky Derby hero Rich Strike in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes, joining Nyquist as Uncle Mo's only classic-winning sons at stud. Campaigned by trainer Todd Pletcher, owner Repole Stable – the same connections as his sire Uncle Mo – and owner Donegal Racing, Mo Donegal also won the G2 Remsen at two over Grade 1 winner Zandon, and G2 Wood Memorial at three over classic winner Early Voting. Another millionaire earner of $1,511,800, Mo Donegal will stand for a fee of $20,000 S&N.

Greatest Honour, winner of the 2021 G2 Fountain of Youth and G3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream, was a frontrunner for last year's Triple Crown before sustaining an injury as the odds-on favorite in the G1 Florida Derby. Trained by Shug McGaughy for owner Courtlandt Farms, the regally-bred son of Tapit recently retired to Spendthrift with earnings of $446,440. His second dam is 2007 Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour, making his dam a half-sister to classic winners Rags to Riches and Jazil as well as Breeders' Cup winner Man of Iron. Greatest Honour will stand his first season at stud for $7,500 S&N.

“It is a very encouraging time for our industry and the breeding community,” Toffey said. “The trend of rising purses we are seeing at racetracks across the country has helped contribute to a yearling market that is breaking records. The demand for a racehorse has not been this strong in a long time, and people have to feel good heading into the breeding season.

“At Spendthrift, we have continued to grow our quality and quantity of stallions, and that has now put us in a position to be able to offer the most diverse roster we've had. We have always strived to provide the best opportunities for breeders, and we believe more than ever that every breeder in the market can have confidence in being rewarded by the quality and value we can offer across the board,” he added.

Into Mischief again leads all North American sires in almost every vital category in 2022, and, with roughly 2 ½ months to go, his $21,408,986 in progeny earnings through Oct. 12th puts him on pace to again break the all-time record of $24,411,267, which he set a year ago. Among his industry-high 13 graded stakes winners to date in 2022 is multiple Grade 1 winner Life Is Good and recent Grade 1-winning 2-year-old filly Wonder Wheel, who captured last weekend's G1 Alcibiades at Keeneland to also move Into Mischief to the top as North America's No. 1 juvenile sire again in 2022. Into Mischief's stud fee will remain at $250,000 S&N.

Popular third-season sire Authentic, Into Mischief's Horse of the Year son, will stand for $60,000 S&N, down slightly from his 2022 fee. The 2020 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic hero will be represented by his highly-anticipated first crop of weanlings at the upcoming November sales.

Leading freshman sire Bolt d'Oro will see an increase in his fee to $35,000 S&N. Bolt d'Oro currently leads all North American sires with 10 black type 2-year-olds – at least three more than any other stallion – and co-leads all North American sires with four black type winners from his debut crop to race. He will likely be represented by multiple 2-year-olds in next month's Breeders' Cup, including recent G2 Pilgrim winner Major Dude.

Omaha Beach and Yaupon will remain at $30,000 S&N, respectively, following overwhelming popularity in their own regard in 2022. Three-time Grade 1 winner Omaha Beach's first crop of yearlings have averaged $220,797 to date, making him far and away the leading freshman in the sales arena. Yaupon, the fast Grade 1-winning son of Uncle Mo, was in high demand during his first season at stud in 2022, quickly booking full.

Spendthrift's stallions under $20,000 are led by champion Vino Rosso, who was one of four freshmen – along with Omaha Beach and Mitole – with a six-figure average from first-crop yearlings to sell in 2022. Vino Rosso will stand for a reduced fee of $15,000 S&N. Multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma, whose first crop of weanlings will sell next month, and the aforementioned champion Mitole will also stand for $15,000 S&N. Established leading sires Goldencents and Jimmy Creed will represent value at the $10,000 S&N level. Also standing for $10,000 S&N are Grade 1 winners and second-year stallions Known Agenda and Rock Your World.

Spendthrift will conduct stallion inspections Oct. 24-27 from 1-3 p.m. daily, during the Fasig-Tipton October sale. Stallions are also available for inspection most days upon appointment.

True Valour To Stand At Northview Stallion Station In Maryland

True Valour (Ire), a graded stakes-winning miler who also excelled at sprint distances while racing in the U.S. and Europe, has been retired to stand at Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md.

Trained by Graham Motion since purchased by R. Larry Johnson in mid-2020, True Valour returned this spring after more than a year off and started three times, winning a stakes at Laurel in his first start in 2021. In his next start in the Grade 1 Jaipur at Belmont, True Valour set all the pace until caught late, beaten one length by multiple Grade 1 winner Casa Creed.

In his next start, a graded stakes at Saratoga, True Valour again made all the pace before losing a head bob to multiple Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal. The layoff came after being injured while competing in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint on 2021 Dubai World Cup Day in which he finished 2 1/4 lengths behind the winner.

Boasting an international pedigree sired by world record-setting sire, Kodiac, and filled with champions and classic winners, True Valour launched his career in Ireland and in his third start battled future Group 1 winner and champion Lancaster Bomber to the wire, a nose separating them at the finish. He won stakes at three and four, including the seven-furlong G3 Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown by more than two lengths, after which he was sent to the U.S.

Counted among his U.S. starts were victories in Santa Anita's G3 Thunder Road Stakes and G2 City of Hope Mile, both at a mile, the latter in a final time of 1:32.82. During his 34 start career, 33 on the turf, he won seven times, five in stakes, and recorded 10 stakes-placings, including seconds in the G2 Joe Hernandez at Santa Anita, the G2 Solonaway Boomerang at Leopardstown and Saratoga's G3 Troy, and thirds in Belmont's G1 Jaipur Stakes, Santa Anita's G3 Thunder Road Stakes, the G3 Investec Diomed at Epsom, and the G3 Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown. True Valour retires with career earnings of $690,237.

Following his victory in the five and a half-furlong King T. Leatherbury Stakes this past April, Motion commented, “I think he makes me look good. I thought Larry was crazy when he wanted to bring him back from an injury as an 8-year-old. He's just a really easy horse.”

Upon his retirement, Motion had the following to say, “True Valour's return to racing in 2022 was remarkable and he displayed more speed than any horse I have ever trained. With his pedigree, ability and conformation I think he has the qualities to be a successful stallion.”

True Valour is the first son of English-bred Kodiac to stand in the U.S.

A son of the incomparable Danehill and a half-brother to major sire Invincible Spirit, Kodiac is making his mark as a sire of sires, and continues to rank as one of the best stallions in the world. He holds the record for most 2-year-old winners in a single season (63 in 2017), has sired more than 160 stakes performers worldwide and is represented by such Group 1 winners as current runner Campanelle (Ire).

From an active female family, True Valour is the first foal out of the winning Irish-bred mare Sutton Veny (by Acclamation), whose current 2-year-old, the filly No Kay Never (Ire), won first-time out this past May and has been since been competing in stakes for trainer Wesley Ward and owner Stonestreet Stables. Sutton Veny is a half-sister to stakes winner Glorificamus (Ire), dam of stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Fasnacloich. True Valour's third dam, Caracciola, is also the dam of Two Thousand Guineas winner Mystiko and behind a far-flung family that has produced highweighted Irish 2-year-old Basim, Group 1 winners in New Zealand and South Africa and stakes performers in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Sweden.

True Valour will stand for a fee of $3,000 live foal with multiple mare discounts.
