Journeyman Stud Moves Stallion Operation, Reveals 2023 Roster

Journeyman Stud will relocate its stallion operation to Reddick, Fla., about eight miles away from its previous location in Ocala, BloodHorse reports.

The new location is on a property already owned by Journeyman's Brent and Crystal Fernung, and represents a move toward standing a smaller number of high-quality stallions than what they'd previously envisioned when they built the 15-stall stallion barn on their Ocala property in 2008.

Journeyman will stand four stallions in 2023, led by Khozan and Uncle Chuck, who will each stand for $6,500.

Khozan, a 10-year-old son of Distorted Humor, was Florida's leading general sire of 2020 and 2021, and he currently leads the standings in 2022.

Uncle Chuck, a 5-year-old son of Uncle Mo, will stand his second year at stud in 2023, after covering 133 mares in his initial book.

Following is the complete list of stallions and fees for Journeyman Stud for 2023:

Khozan – $6,500
St Patrick's Day – $3,500
Uncle Chuck – $6,500
Chance It – $2,000

Darley Japan Acquires Champion Will Take Charge

Darley Japan Co., Ltd. will stand Will Take Charge, an Eclipse Award-winning son of Unbridled's Song, for the 2023 season.

Will Take Charge won the Grade 1 Travers Stakes, a traditional race known as the “Midsummer Derby” at the age of three, among his many notable victories. In the Breeders' Cup Classic, despite being disadvantaged, he finished second. However, he won the next race, G1 Clark Handicap against older competition, and clinched the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male.

In 2015, Will Take Charge entered stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., and his debut crop included Grade 2 winner Manny Wah, who finished fourth in this year's Breeders' Cup Sprint, a close margin behind the winner. This year, There Goes Harvard won the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup.

Will Take Charge has also had success with a handful of runners in Japan. Four of the five runners on the Japan Racing Association circuit have become winners, and all of those have achieved two or more wins, demonstrating their high aptitude.

The horse's sire, Unbridled Song, was a great success as a stallion, sending out more than 20 Grade or Group 1 winners, led by Arrogate, who won four Grade/Group 1 races including the Dubai World Cup and Breeders' Cup Classic.

Will Take Charge is out of Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady, a famous mare who won three Grade 1 races, including consecutive wins in the Spinster S. Her other foals of note include Grade 1 winners Take Charge Indy and As Time Goes By, and the extended family features Grade 1 winner Omaha Beach and champion Take Charge Brandi.
