First Foal A Filly For Taylor Made Stallions’ Knicks Go

Taylor Made Stallions' 2021 Horse of the Year Knicks Go, a five-time Grade 1 winner and two-time Breeders' Cup winner, sired his first reported foal when a filly bred by Alex and Kendra Penn was born on Thursday evening, Jan. 12.

The filly was produced from the Pioneerof the Nile mare Seeking a Star, a half sister to 2-year-old stakes winner Miss Interpret and out of a half sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Paulassilverlining, the dam of Artorius, impressive winner of the 2022 Curlin Stakes at Saratoga.

At 4, Knicks Go became the fastest miler in Keeneland history after winning the 2020 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) in a track record time of 1:33.85. He demonstrated his precocity at 2, winning the Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland by a dominating 5 ½ lengths. All told, Knicks Go banked $9,258,135 in a stellar racing career and was a Grade 1 winner at 2, 4, and 5. Knicks Go recorded eight triple-digit Beyers, including a 113—ranking as the fastest stakes winner of 2021.

With 151 mares in his first book, Knicks Go ranked as a Top 5 Freshman Sire by 2022 CI and CPI and he saw his first in-foal mares sell for up to $480,000 last year. His stud fee is $15,000 S&N for 2023.

Epicenter Arrives At Coolmore After Recovering From Condylar Fracture, Two Surgeries

An Eclipse Award finalist in the 3-Year-Old Male category for his body of work in 2022, Epicenter has made the next step in his recovery from a condylar fracture suffered during the running of this year's Breeders' Cup Classic. The 4-year-old son of Not This Time arrived at Coolmore's Ashford Stud on Jan. 13, following two months of recovery at Becky Maker's Shantera Farm near Versailles, Ky.

Epicenter entered the Classic for owner Winchell Thoroughbreds and Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen after winning the Grade 1 Travers and the G2 Jim Dandy before that. He was the runner-up in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and also won the G2 Louisiana Derby and G2 Risen Star last spring.

Jockey Joel Rosario pulled up Epicenter on the backstretch during the Nov. 5 Classic, and the colt was vanned off wearing a splint to stabilize the leg. The trailer received a police escort to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, where Epicenter was diagnosed with a lateral condylar fracture to his right front leg.

A condylar fracture refers to a vertical fracture toward the lower (distal) end of the cannon bone. Depending on the complexity of the fracture and whether or not the skin has been broken, these types of injuries can frequently be surgically repaired with one or more screws and/or plates.

Dr. Larry Bramlage performed successful surgery on Nov. 6, inserting two screws to stabilize the fracture.

Asmussen released the following statement on the afternoon of Nov. 6: “Ron Winchell, David Fiske, and myself want to expressly thank Joel Rosario for getting him pulled up, the on-site veterinarians, Dr. Nick Smith, who treated Epicenter on the track, and Dr. Stuart Brown, who coordinated Epicenter's transportation from the racetrack, with a police escort, directly to Rood and Riddle, Keeneland, and my assistants Scott Blasi and Sarah Campion who stayed with Epicenter.”

According to bloodhorse.com, the screws broke about a month later and Epicenter had to undergo a second surgery.

“Dr. Bramlage said, 'I've gone 500 of these and never had a broken screw,'” Winchell racing manager David Fiske told bloodhorse.com. “It was right around the first of December; he had just started walking and I guess something shifted, and those screws just broke.

“After his second surgery, it had been on the calendar for him to be re-assessed and X-rayed again, and if everything was going good, for him to head over to Ashford. He got the green light from Dr. Bramlage earlier in the week. He'd already been walking twice a day and he can walk at Ashford just as well as he can walk at Becky's. He was starting to get to be a little bit of a handful.”

Epicenter arrived at Ashford on Friday and entered the stall next to Triple Crown champion Justify. Fiske provided several updates on social media throughout the process:

He comes from a graded stakes-winning, champion sire-producing family, out of the Rahy mare Verdana Bold. He's a full brother to Lucrezia, a multiple stakes-winner at two, and runner-up in the G2 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Park Oaks to Preakness Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver. Verdana Bold is a graded stakes-winning daughter of champion sire Rahy, damsire of more than 200 stakes winners, including leading sire Giant's Causeway and other Grade 1 millionaires Declaration of War and Courageous Cat. Rogueish, whose first crop are 2-year-olds of 2023, is by three-time champion general sire Into Mischief, leading general sire in North America for the past four years. In 2019, he became the first stallion in history to surpass $18 million in progeny earnings for a single season. Into Mischief stands at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Ky., for $250,000, the highest stud fee in North America.

Greatness is the last son of super-sire Mr. Prospector standing in North America, and is the sire of four champions, winners of 847 races, 18 black-type horses and earners of more than $18 million. Six of his top earners have won a combined total of 85 races.

Among his 183 winners, Greatness is the sire of nine-time stakes winner Immortal Eyes, who compiled an outstanding record of 59-19-15-5 while earning $1,172,846, and set a track record at Charles Town – 4 1/2 furlongs in :50.09 – which still stands.

He is also the sire of Good Lord, a 15-time winner and earner of $803,305, who finished in the top four in 30 stakes and set four track records, one of which, seven furlongs in 1:22.68 at Charles Town, still stands; and multiple stakes-placed, 11-time winner Lady of Greatness, who set a track record at Tampa Bay Downs which still stands – 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:02.79. Lady's Island, a multiple graded SW, won 18 races, earned $665,575, and in one span in 2019-2020 compiled a 13-race streak of 11 victories and two seconds, with five stakes victories.
