Veteran Sire Pioneering Dies In Brazil At Age 30

Pioneering, a half-brother to Storm Cat and veteran sire, died earlier this month at Haras dos Girassóis in Brazil, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 3o-year-old son of Mr. Prospector had been living in Brazil since 2009, when he was purchased by a group of the country's breeders, and he was pensioned from stud duty in 2018.

A Kentucky homebred for Overbrook Farm, Pioneering was out of the Secretariat mare Terlingua, making him a half-brother to Overbrook's cornerstone runner and sire Storm Cat. He went to the barn of trainer D. Wayne Lukas, and he raced six times during his 2-year-old season, winning a maiden special weight at Keeneland and an allowance at Hollywood Park.

Pioneering was retired after his juvenile season, and he entered stud at Overbrook in 1996.

His top Northern Hemisphere runners included Grade 1 winner Behaving Badly and Grade 3 winner Black Hornet, Pioneer Boy and Danthebluegrassman. He was also the sire of 2005 Puerto Rican Horse of the Year Triano and 2006 Mexican Horse of the Year Canoa.

After moving to South America, Pioneering's runners were topped by Rainha Pioneira, a four-time champion in Uruguay. Other year-end award winners by Pioneering include Brazilian champion juvenile Farrier, and Uruguayan champions Regal Nix and Esquentada.
