Grade 1 Winner Ivar Retired To Stand In Argentina

Ivar, a champion in Argentina and a Grade 1 winner in the U.S., has been retired from racing and will begin his stallion career at Haras Carampangue in Argentina, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

A Brazilian-born 7-year-old son of Agnes Gold, Ivar retired with six wins in 16 starts for earnings of $1,586,303.

Ivar was named Argentina's champion 2-year-old male of 2019, with Group 1 victories in the Gran Criterium and Estrellas Juvenile.

He was shipped to the U.S. the following year, and put in the barn of trainer Paulo Lobo for owners Bonne Chance Farm and Stud R D I. After a couple races in allowance optional claiming company, Ivar earned his first stakes placing with a third in the listed Tourist Mile Stakes at Kentucky Downs. He then picked up the biggest U.S. victory of his career when he closed hard to win the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland. He returned to the same track a month later to finish fourth in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Mile.

Future campaigns saw Ivar win the listed Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis and earn a quartet of Grade 1 placings, including a third in the 2021 Breeders' Cup Mile, and runner-up efforts in the Woodbine Mile Stakes, Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes, and this year's Pegasus World Cup Invitational Turf Stakes, which would be his career finale.

Bred in Brazil by Stud Rio Dois Irmaos, Ivar is out of the Smart Strike mare May Be Now.

Ivar joins a stallion roster at Haras Carampangue that includes Grade 1 winners Suggestive Boy, Seek Again, and Grade 1-placed Forge.

Ocala Stud’s First-Year Stallion Trio Has Mares Confirmed In Foal

Ocala Stud's three first-season stallions—Roadster, Colonel Liam, and Gretzky the Great—each have had their first mares confirmed in foal, the farm announced today.

Alotofappeal, a stakes-producing daughter of Trippi owned by Ocala Stud, has scanned in foal to Roadster. A Sunshine State product, Alotofappeal is the dam of stakes winner B C's Train, graded stakes-placed Talk Logistics, and stakes-placed Schivarelli, Sonoma Crush, and Big Rings. She is also represented by Commandant, a $300,000 OBS Spring Sale graduate a year ago and a subsequent maiden special weight debut winner at Gulfstream Park.

Roadster, a son of perennial leading sire Quality Road, was an impressive winner of the 2019 Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. Named a TDN Rising Star following an emphatic 4 ¼-length score in a Del Mar maiden special weight in his debut, Roadster finished third in the 2018 G1 Del Mar Futurity in just his second lifetime start. In addition to his Santa Anita Derby victory, Roadster finished second in the G1 Malibu Stakes to Omaha Beach, second in the G2 San Carlos Stakes, and was runner-up to Grade 1 winner Mucho Gusto in the G3 Affirmed Stakes. He amassed earnings of $901,500, winning nine of 16 starts.

Oakleaf Farm's Florida-bred Sainted Dancer, a seven-time winner by Saint Anddan, is confirmed in foal to Colonel Liam.

Colonel Liam, a three-time Grade 1 winner and back-to-back winner of the G1 Pegasus Turf Invitational Stakes at Gulfstream Park, was a $1.2 million graduate of the OBS Spring Sale, where he was purchased by Jacob West on behalf of Robert and Lawana Low.

A son of Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam's Map, a half-brother to leading sire Not This Time, Colonel Liam is produced from the Bernardini mare Amazement and hails from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Wonder Again, his second dam. All told, Colonel Liam banked more than $1.8 million.

JD Farms' Bold Rate, a Florida-bred daughter of Exchange Rate, has scanned in foal to Gretzky the Great.  Bold Rate is a half-sister to stakes-placed Rare Candy and Wings of Pegasus, and hails from the family of Grade 1 winner Salt Lake.

Gretzky the Great was a Grade 1 winner at two and son of champion and Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. Campaigned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber and trained by Mark Casse, Gretzky the Great recorded a scintillating score in Woodbine's G2 Summer Stakes at one mile on the turf as a juvenile. In addition to his triumph in the Summer Stakes, Gretzky the Great also won the Soaring Free Stakes and the Greenwood Stakes, and finished third in the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes.

Hailing from the family of graded stakes winners Saint Anddan, Love Theway You are, and Luftikus, Gretzky the Great is produced from the stakes-placed Bernardini mare Pearl Turn.

Aga Khan Studs Announce 2023 Mating Plans

The Aga Khan Studs are supporting their roster of stallions with a number of leading names from the broodmare band in 2023.

In France, Siyouni has led the sire standings for six consecutive seasons, and is well established as one of the top stallions in Europe. The Aga Khan Studs will be supporting him with another quality book of 22 mares, highlighted by Zarkava, who also has a Siyouni 2-year-old named Zarouk to represent her this year. Her Dubawi daughter Zarka will join her in Siyouni's book for her first cover, as will the globetrotting Ebaiyra, a multiple Group winner and Group 1 performer.

Another star name on Siyouni's list is Tarnawa. The triple Group 1 winner is a half-sister to Siyouni filly Tahiyra, a Group 1 winning juvenile last season and exciting 2023 classic prospect. A stakes-placed half-sister to Vadeni, Vadsena, also visits Siyouni, along with Group 2 winners and Group 1 runners-up Candarliya and Valia, Group 3 winner Hamariyna, Dariuza – a stakes-winning half-sister to Dariyan – and fellow stakes winners Likala, Shahnaza and Simeen.

Gilltown Stud resident Sea The Stars finished last season as the leading sire in Ireland, with four Group 1 winners to his name, and also established his position as an exciting up-and-coming broodmare sire.

The Aga Khan Studs will be sending him five mares, including Vaderana, dam of 2022 Cartier Champion 3-Year-Old, Vadeni. She will be joined by Zaykava, a listed winning daughter of Siyouni and champion Zarkava; Haparanda, another stakes winner who hails from the family of Sea The Stars' dual classic winning son Harzand; Tasalka, a winning half-sister to the dam of Tarnawa and Tahiyra; and new retiree Ebba, a winning half-sister to Ebaiyra from the famous 'E' family of Ebaziya.

After a scintillating start at stud with his first two crops to race, Zarak will cover 15 mares belonging to the Aga Khan Studs. They include Group 1 winner Dolniya and her dam Daltama; Group winners Ebiyza (dam of Ebaiyra) and Emiyna; Stakes winners Dariyma, Mila and Sayana (a Galileo half-sister to Siyouni); Candara (dam of three Stakes winners including Candarliya); Baiyka (a half-sister to Zarak's group winning daughter Baiykara); and Erdana (a Sea The Stars half-sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1 placed Erevann).

Completing the line-up is Dariyan, a Group 1 winning son of Shamardal, who will receive some well-bred young mares from the broodmare band, including Keirasia (by Zoustar out of stakes winning Oasis Dream mare Kerasona), Minna (by Le Havre out of winning Sinndar mare Minya) and Vvedaska (by Siyouni out of stakes winning Dalakhani mare Vedouma, from the celebrated family of Vadeni).
