Bloodlines Presented By Mill Ridge Farm: Hill ‘n’ Dale’s Big Derby Prep Weekend Goes Back Generations

You could say it was a Hill 'n' Dale Weekend. Not only did the farm's stallion Violence (by Medaglia d'Oro) have two graded stakes winners in classic preps, but John Sikura's operation also is co-breeder of Slip Mahoney (Arrogate), who was a good-looking second in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct behind the Violence colt Raise Cain.

The Gotham winner was unexpected, starting at 23-1 odds, but the star turn on a very positive set of results for Violence was last season's champion juvenile colt Forte, who was odds-on at 1-2 for his seasonal debut in the G2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream.

The handsome dark bay or brown looked full value for those odds as he sat handily behind the pace, swooped four wide on the turn, and left his rivals with no recourse as he ran on through the stretch to win by 4 ½ lengths from Holy Bull Stakes winner Rocket Can and Cyclone Mischief (both by Into Mischief).

Bred in Kentucky by South Gate Farm, Forte was sold as a weanling for $80,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November sale and then resold as a yearling at Keeneland's 2021 September sale for $110,000 to Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable.

The striking colt is the first foal of his dam, the multiple stakes winner Queen Caroline (Blame), and this is a family that was developed over generations while in the Frances Genter family stable. This is the immediate female family of champions Essential Quality (Tapit) and Folklore (Tiznow).

A colt of considerable elegance, Forte comes from one of the most distinguished female families in the Stud Book, that of La Troienne (Teddy), who was bred in France by Marcel Boussac and imported as a broodmare carrying her first foal by Col. E. R. Bradley. The mare proved a success beyond the scope of that word in ordinary usage.

La Troienne produced five stakes winners, including the exceptional filly Black Helen and the champion and classic winner Bimelech (both by Black Toney). The distribution of Bradley's bloodstock came with the purchase of all of the Bradley broodmares and foals by Robert J. Kleberg (King Ranch), John Hay Whitney (Greentree Stud), and Ogden Phipps.

Phipps got La Troienne's daughter Baby League, the dam of Horse of the Year Busher, and for Phipps, Baby League produced Striking (War Admiral), winner of the 1949 Schuylerville and Broodmare of the Year in 1961. Her branch of this family produced Forte.

La Troienne herself went to Greentree, and she is buried in their equine graveyard, which is now part of Gainesway Farm. Bimelech likewise went to stand at Greentree, and other parts of the mare's legacy were distributed among the purchasers and went on to play significant roles in racing's continuing story.

Although La Troienne did not win, she was highly tested against high-class fillies. A winner of the Oaks in 1904, however, is the ancestress of this year's Gotham Stakes winner. A racer of exceptional character who found lasting admiration among the racing public, Pretty Polly (Gallinule) won 22 of her 24 starts and is generally regarded as one of the greatest racers ever.

This chestnut paragon is the female-line ancestor of Raise Cain. The Gotham winner is out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Lemon Belle, who is a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), the dam of champion Unique Bella (Tapit).

Raise Cain is the first stakes winner of his dam, and she has a 2-year-old colt by Frosted (Tapit) and a colt at side by Constitution (Tapit) who was foaled last month.

Bred in Kentucky by Rock Ridge Thoroughbreds LLC, Raise Cain sold for $180,000 by Andrew Warren at Keeneland's September yearling sale two years ago; returned to auction at the OBS June sale last year, Raise Cain was bought back at $65,000 and races for Andrew Warren and Rania Warren.

Should both of these colts make the rest of the journey to Louisville for the Run for the Roses, they will not lack for classic connections in their ancestral lines.

Turf Star Got Stormy Loses Pregnancy, Bred To Bolt d’Oro For 2024

Got Stormy, one of North America's most exciting turf milers of the past decade, will not deliver a foal in 2023, after losing her pregnancy late last year, Spendthrift Farm announced Wednesday.

The daughter of Get Stormy was part of the first book of mares for Spendthrift's Yaupon, a Grade 1-winning son of Uncle Mo, in 2022.

The farm announced that she was bred to fellow Spendthrift resident Bolt d'Oro on March 5 for the 2024 foaling season.

Spendthrift Farm's announcement can be read in full below:

“We are disappointed to report that near the end of 2022, Got Stormy experienced the loss of her pregnancy. While it is sad for all of us here at Spendthrift that she will not have a foal this year, we are very grateful she is in good health. We are excited to announce Got Stormy was bred on March 5th to champion freshman sire Bolt d'Oro. We thank all of her fans and MyRacehorse for their continued love and interest in this special mare.”

Got Stormy won 12 of 32 starts over the course of five seasons on the racetrack, earning $2,468,403.

She excelled from seven furlongs to a mile over the turf, winning 10 stakes races over the course of her career with trainer Mark Casse. The mare was purchased by Spendthrift Farm for $2.75 million at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, and kept in training for one more season in partnership with MyRacehorse after previously being campaigned by Gary Barber.

Got Stormy is perhaps best known for her exploits at Saratoga Race Course, where she competed against males in three consecutive runnings of the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap from 2019 to 2021. In 2019, she lowered the course record for a mile over the Saratoga's inner turf by more than a full second, becoming the first filly to win the Fourstardave, and doing it in 1:32 flat – a record that still stands today.

After finishing second in the 2020 Fourstardave, Got Stormy came back to win the race again in 2021.

Other victories of note by Got Stormy include the G1 Matriarch Stakes, and Grade 3 scores in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint Stakes, Franklin County Stakes, and Honey Fox Stakes. She also turned in runner-up efforts against male foes in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park and the G1 Woodbine Mile.

Bolt d'Oro, an 8-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $35,000. He was North America's leading freshman sire of 2022 by progeny earnings and he tied for the top spot by stakes winners, with six.

His top runners include Instant Coffee, who won the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at two, and established himself as a top Kentucky Derby contender with a win in the G3 Lecomte Stakes. Bolt d'Oro also has Grade 3 winners Boppy O and Major Dude.

Mount Craig, Ek Haseena Top Fasig-Tipton March Digital Sale

The March Digital Sale closed Tuesday afternoon with 29 horses sold for $795,000. Offerings included breeding stock, horses of racing age, 2-year-olds, and yearlings.

Mount Craig (Hip 11), a 4-year-old racing/stallion prospect by Arrogate, topped the sale when sold for $140,000 to Harry Rosenblum from the consignment of Juddmonte. Out of the stakes winning, graded stakes placed Curlin mare Flash Forward, Mount Craig is placed in four of five starts at three and four with earnings to date of $54,074. A late addition to the sale after a running a good third in maiden special weight company on March 2, Mount Craig sold from trainer Bill Mott's stable at Oaklawn Park.

“Fasig-Tipton does a great job with their internet bidding,” said Rosenblum. “They have a good product and great people. We're thrilled to get Mount Craig as a racing prospect.”

Ek Haseena (Hip 10), dam of recent Group 3 Saudi Derby winner Commissioner King, was the sale's top-priced broodmare. George Sharp purchased the daughter of Songandaprayer for $130,000 from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Danny and Allison Caldwell. A stakes placed winner herself, Ek Haseena is already the dam of four winners from five to race. These include Commissioner King, a three-time winner in four starts to date at two and three whose victory in the Saudi Derby on the Saudi World Cup undercard boosted his earnings to $933,867. Ek Haseena was offered in foal to Jimmy Creed.

Other top hips included:

– Warranty (Hip 8), a stakes placed winning half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Imprimis, sold for $70,000 to the Fire At Will Syndicate from the consignment of Machmer Hall Sales, agent. The daughter of Artie Schiller was offered in foal to Champion Two-Year-Old Game Winner.

– Mimi's Shot (Hip 3), sold with her 2023 Florida-bred Girvin colt foaled Jan. 19, was purchased for $55,000 by Victory Stable from the consignment of Boutte Sales, agent.  Lynne Boutte originally purchased the mare in foal at the 2022 October Digital Selected Sale for $15,000 from the consignment of KP Sales, agent.

– Terrier (Hip 6), a 3-year-old colt by three-time leading sire Into Mischief, sold for $55,000 to JD Thoroughbreds LLC and Joey K. Davis from the consignment of SF Racing et al. A debut winner at Santa Anita on Feb. 10, Terrier was the subject of an extended bidding war which took him 17 minutes past his scheduled closing time of 2:10 PM ET. He was sold out of trainer Tim Yakteen's barn at Santa Anita Park.

– Scherzo (GB) (Hip 9), a graded stakes placed daughter of Golden Horn (GB), sold for $55,000 to Sonata Stables from the consignment of Baroda Stud, agent. A multiple winner in North America at three, four, and five, Scherzo was placed in last year's G3 Astra Stakes at Santa Anita. The 6-year-old mare was offered as a broodmare prospect.

“We had a fantastic sale,” said Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales Leif Aaron. “This was the first calendar sale of the year and we're thrilled with the results. It was great to see the 17-minute bidding war on Terrier, which showed that for the right horse, the digital platform can offer the same spirited bidding and excitement of an in-person sale.”

In total, 29 horses sold for $795,000, good for an average of $27,413. The RNA rate was 17 percent. Two-hundred-fifty users registered to bid on the 35 offerings.

Results are available online.
