Toast To Vino Rosso: Freshman Draft At OBS Spring Sale Is A Grassroots Effort

Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Vino Rosso is well-represented with his first crop in the 2023 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, with 40 entered in the signature catalog of the North American juvenile auction season.

Throughout the week, we will be speaking with consignors about the Vino Rosso 2-year-olds they have entered in the OBS Spring Sale catalog, with photos and videos of the spotlight horses, and notes on their pedigrees.

Vino Rosso, an 8-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $15,000.

Vino Rosso won won six of 15 starts and earned $4,803,125 on the racetrack. In addition to his signature Breeders' Cup Classic score, the stallion picked up victories in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, and the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes. He was a First-Team member of the 2022-23 All-Value Sire Team in “The Freshman” position.

A daughter of the stakes-placed Vindication mare Choice Play, who is the dam of six winners from seven foals to race. Her extended family features Grade 1 winner Maxim Rate, French Group 2 winner Celtic Celeb, and U.A.E. Group 3 winner Nomorerichblondes.

This filly breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 flat during the under-tack show.

An Indiana-bred filly out of the placed Rockport Harbor mare Double Harbor, whose five winners from six runners includes stakes winner Sky Writer. Italian St. Leger winner Sierra Star can be found on her page, along with Grade 2 winner Azul Leon.

The filly breezed one furlong in :10 3/5 seconds during the under-tack show.

A Louisiana-bred filly out of the stakes-winning Flat Out mare Special Blessing. Her fourth dam, Darby Lake, is a half-sister to Turkish Tryst, the dam of Grade 1 winner and prominent sire Hard Spun.

Hip No. 449, a son of Frosted consigned by Longoria Training and Sales, Agent, breezed an eighth in :9 3/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the third session of the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2023 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The bay colt is out of Handwoven, by Indian Charlie, a half-sister to graded stakes placed Flatter Than Me.

Hip No. 484, a daughter of Nyquist consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, turned in the day's fastest quarter, stopping the timer in :20 3/5. The bay filly is out of stakes winning OBS graduate Hi Holiday, by Harlan's Holiday, a half sister to graded stakes winner Dr B.

There were two quarters timed in :20 4/5

Hip No. 332, a son of No Nay Never sped a quarter in :20 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the second session of the Under Tack Show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2023 Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

The dark bay or brown colt, consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc. (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, is out of graded stakes winner Etoile, by War Front, a full sister to graded stakes winner Ancient Rome.

Four horses shared honors for the session's fastest eighth, clocked in :9 4/5.

Elizabeth Snellings Named Director Of Sales At Denali Stud

Elizabeth Snellings has been named the new director of sales at Denali Stud after six years working as the farm office manager at Indian Creek. She succeeds Sarah Fishback who held the position for seven years. Elizabeth will also be managing the office at Denali.

“We are thrilled to welcome Elizabeth onto the team at Denali Stud. She brings a large skillset that will benefit us as well as our clients,” said Conrad Bandoroff. “Elizabeth has always felt like part of the Denali family, so we're happy and very excited to make that official.”

Elizabeth has accrued extensive experience in the Thoroughbred industry, including positions held at American Association of Equine Practitioners, Keeneland, Warrendale Sales and Mill Ridge Farm.

“When this opportunity presented itself, it was a very clear next step for me,” said Elizabeth. “I really appreciate Shack Parrish, Sarah Sutherland, and the entire team at Indian Creek and the time I spent there. I'm looking forward to working for Denali and its world-class farm and sales operation.”
