Pennsylvania Leaderboard: Weigelia Opens Up Early Lead In Stallion Awards Race

After a long rein by the late Jump Start at the top of the Pennsylvania sire ranks, it appears there is a new sheriff in town.

After leading all Pennsylvania sires by stallion awards earned for the first time in 2022, Wyn Oaks Farm's Weigelia is once again setting the pace through the first quarter of 2023, leading longtime rival Jump Start by a margin of $61,206 to $44,250.

The owner of a Pennsylvania-based stallion at the time of a foal's conception is eligible for stallion awards generated by that foal. Stallion owners receive 10 percent of the purse earned when a registered Pennsylvania-bred and- sired runner finishes in the top three in any pari-mutuel race within the state.

Weigelia's rapid ascent in 2023 makes plenty of sense when one accounts for the fact that the top five individual earners of stallion awards on the racetrack were each by the leading sire.

Chief among them is Disco Ebo, who earned $9,996 in stallion awards for Weigelia's owner through the end of March.

The 4-year-old filly went three-for-three in that time frame, taking a pair of allowance races at Parx Racing in January and February, then leading at every point of call and drawing off by 6 3/4 lengths to win the Penn's Landing Stakes at the same track on March 7.

Date Night Kisses was Weigelia's second-leading earner of stallion awards, bringing in $7,728.

Also a 4-year-old filly, Date Night Kisses went unbeaten in two starts through the end of March, leading all the way around to win a Parx starter allowance on Jan. 18 by 7 3/4 lengths, then going to the front once again in a Feb. 13 Parx optional claiming race, where she hung on to win by three-quarters of a length.

Rounding out the quintet of top earners on behalf of Weigelia were Captain Chazz ($4,872); Ninetypercentbrynn ($4,872); and Beren ($4,788).

Weigelia, a 22-year-old son of Safely's Mark, stands at WynOaks Farm in Delta, Pa., for a private fee.

He won 13 of 48 starts during his on-track career and earned $1,007,708, highlighted by victories in the Grade 3 Carry Back Stakes and Kenny Noe Jr. Handicap, with four additional graded stakes placings.

First-Crop Sire Watch Presented By Kirkwood Equine Advisory: 2023 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May Sale

Following is a list of stallions whose first crops of 2-year-olds are represented in the upcoming Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, including the number of horses cataloged and the farm where the stallion is currently advertised.

Offerings from the debut crop of a stallion are often met with a commercial premium from buyers at auction. A stallion's stud fee is often at its highest during their first season, increasing the initial investment, and the natural intrigue of a blue-sky prospect often put a unique spotlight on the rookie sires at any given sale.

Here are the opportunities to get in on the ground floor with a first-year stallion at this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale, along with analysis on a pair of standout sires by Kip Elser of Kirkwood Equine Advisory.

—List Continues After Analysis—

Analysis of WinStar Farm's Audible and Spendthrift Farm's Maximus Mischief from Kip Elser of Kirkwood Equine Advisory:

As we get later into the juvenile sales season, you really start to get a feel for how some of the more well represented sires' progeny are developing as they mature. Two that I have been watching the past few sales and wanted to save until later in the year to discuss are Maximus Mischief and Audible, both sons of Into Mischief.

The fastest 2-year-old of his crop, Maximus Mischief was known on the track for his speed, launching his career with an 8 3/4- length victory before dominating in the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes. As a group, his first crop is what you'd want to see. They're good-looking horses with a nice leg to them and they're great breezers, with two stopping the clock at :9.4 this past March. It's no surprise they're catching the attention of all the right buyers. With a $63,613 average on a $7,500 stud fee, I'd say those who got in on him early are looking smart now.

Cary Frommer, who sold him as a 2-year-old at this very sale, has been paying particularly close attention to his offspring and told me the other day how impressed she is by them. He seems to have stamped them well – they're big, fast and precocious, just like he was.

Audible is an exceptionally good-looking son of Into Mischief that showed both speed and stamina. I remember seeing him as a racehorse, he had such scope, balance and class about him, and his Florida Derby win against the best of his crop was truly impressive. His offspring have been well received by buyers this season and you can see why as you watch their breezes. They have an efficiency and smoothness to their stride, not only during their breezes, but as they go into it and as they gallop out around the turn. I think there will be some nice runners in his first crop.

New Yorker Repole Has Cal-Bred Juvenile Filly Set To Debut At Santa Anita

High-profile owner Mike Repole is a born and raised New Yorker whose vast racing stable typically competes on the eastern and Midwest circuits. But in recent years, the founder of VitaminWater has increasingly dabbled with California-breds.

Repole's California presence will be on full display Saturday with first-time starter Pushiness, a 2-year-old filly by Kantharos who debuts in the opener for trainer Michael McCarthy. Repole purchased Pushiness for $115,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearlings and Horses of All Ages Sale.

McCarthy's relationship with Repole dates to McCarthy's time serving as an assistant for Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, who is Repole's main trainer in New York. Repole and Pletcher had the morning-line favorite for this year's Kentucky Derby, Forte, but that colt was scratched the morning of the race.

McCarthy says he currently has a “handful” of California-bred 2-year-olds owned by Repole and more are expected in the coming days.

“He likes the state-bred program and tries to take advantage of it,” McCarthy said referring to the purse incentives that are offered for horses bred in California.

As for Pushiness, she is listed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for her debut, a 4 ½-furlong dash on the main track. She has worked six times since April 10 including a pair of quick gate drills. On April 22 she went a half mile in 46.80 seconds and added another gate work in 46.60 seconds two weeks later.

Pushiness is out of Imperial Pippin, a stakes-placed daughter of Empire Maker who got her start in Europe for international powerhouse Juddmonte Farms.

McCarthy said he had hoped to debut Pushiness on turf but landed on this spot in order to get a race under her girth.

“She's had a couple of decent gate works. We'll see what happens on the dirt,” he added.

Pushiness has lured Santa Anita leading rider Juan Hernandez for her debut but will have to overcome the inside post in a seven-horse field. Post time for the opener of Saturday's 10-race card is 1 p.m.
