Silvano Yearling Headline Act on First Day of BSA National Sale

A yearling colt by Silvano (Ger) topped the first day of the Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale on Thursday. The Maine Chance Farms consignee, sold as lot 191 for R2.4 million (£122,652/€141,313/US$169,068) to the Hong Kong Jockey Club, he is out of G2 Sceptre S. heroine Princess Royal (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}). In addition, he is a half-brother to MGSW Princess Calla (SAf) (Flower Alley).

Lot 137, a colt by Gimmethegreenlight (Aus) from the Mauritzfontein draft, also attracted the HKJC's attention and went for R1.5 million. The bay is a full-brother to MGSW and G1 SA Classic runner-up Barahin (SAf) (Gimmethegreenlight {Aus}).

Sandy Arundel snapped up Drakenstein Stud's lot 73, a colt by Dynasty (SAf). Out of Jet Belle (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}), the September foal made R1.2 million. His dam, a triple graded winner, was also placed four times at the highest level.

A five-time champion sire, Silvano was also responsible for the most expensive filly on the day, lot 133. A member of the Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm consignment, she was knocked down for R1.1 million to Pieter Graaff's Lammerskraal Stud. The filly is a daughter of Miss October (SAf) (Var), a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and Equus Champion Tempting Fate (SAf) (Master Of My Fate {SAf}).

National Yearling Sale Catalogue Online

The catalogue for Bloodstock South Africa's National Yearling Sale, which takes place at the TBA complex in Germiston on Apr. 15 and 16, is online. The catalogue includes half siblings to a pair of Horses of the Year who were also National Sale graduates in Do It Again (SAf) (Twice Over {GB}) and Legal Eagle (SAf) (Greys Inn). Stallions represented by their first yearlings in the country include a few familiar names in Europe in Canford Cliffs (Ire), Erupt (GB) and Wings Of Desire (GB). Colts by Oasis Dream (GB) and Myboycharlie (Ire) are also on offer. The sale likewise includes a plethora of yearlings out of Group 1-winning mares, and siblings to Group 1 winners.

Cape Yearling Sale Topped By Vercingetorix Colt

A yearling colt by Vercingetorix (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) took top billing during Sunday's Bloodstock South Africa Cape Yearling Sale. Consigned by Wilgerbosdrift as lot 64, the yearling, named Galic War (SAf), hammered at R375,000 to the Hollywood Syndicate. Produced by the winning Oojooba (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}), the colt's second dam is the group-placed Salsabeel (Aus) (Elusive Quality) from the extended family of G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Dead Certain (GB) (Absalom {GB}).

The top filly (lot 9) of the sale was by What A Winter (SAf) (Western Winter) and she was purchased by GMB Bloodstock. Consigned by Daytona Stud and named Inner Sense (SAf), the filly brought R320,000.

Overall, the sale grossed R11.77 million for 141 sold (81%) from 174 offered. The average was R84,071 (+26%) and the median also rose to R65,000 (+62.5%).

Silvano Colt Leads National 2YO Sale Opener

A colt by recently pensioned South African champion sire Silvano (Ger) took top billing during the first of two sessions of the Bloodstock South Africa National 2-Year-Old Sale on Thursday. Offered by Wilgerbosdrift Stud as lot 100, the fourth foal out of the dual Group 1 winner Europa Point (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) was bought by Form Bloodstock for R1.1 million ($70,494/£53,710/€59,723) and was the only seven-figure transaction of the day. The colt’s third dam, Sheroog (Shareef Dancer), is a full-sister to Colorado Dancer (Ire), the dam of Dubai Millennium, and thus it is also the family of leading South African sire Fort Wood.

Silvano also supplied the session’s top-priced filly, lot 54, who was bought by John Freeman for R360,000 ($23,070/£17,581/€19,545). The Ridgemont Highlands-consigned filly is the fourth foal out of the Group 1-placed Careful Hiker (SAf) (Spectrum {Ire}), herself a daughter of the South African champion broodmare Our Table Mountain (Fusaichi Pegasus), a half-sister to American turf champion Artie Schiller.

On the first day of trade, 162 of the 184 2-year-olds offered were sold for an aggregate of R18,680,000 ($1,196,113/£911,770/€1,014,215). The average and median both ticked up 11.7% at R115,309 ($7,383/£5,628/€6,255) and R67,500 ($4,322/£3,294/€3,661), respectively.
