Strong Trade As BSA National Yearling Sale Ends

A bay son of Gimmethegreenlight (Aus) (lot 378) brought a session-topping R2 million (£100,745/€120,106/$126,676) during the second day's trade at the Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale which ended on Friday. Greg Bortz snapped up the half-brother to Grade 3 winners Ghaalla (SAf) (Var) and Due Diligence (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) from Varsfontein Stud, who is already named Steadfast (SAf). South African Triple Crown winner Malmoos (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) features under the second dam.

Second top lot was a son of Fire Away out of Equus Champion Broodmare of the Year Halfway To Heaven (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}) (lot 407). A member of the Wilgerbosdrift consignment, Hope And Dreams (SAf) brought a bid of R1.6 million from Form Bloodstock. The dark bay has three half-siblings that have won at the highest level in South Africa-Equus Horse of the Year Rainbow Bridge (SAf) (Ideal World), Equus Champion 3-Year-Old Colt Hawwaam (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) and Golden Ducat (SAf) (Philanthropist).

Lot 274, a daughter of Gimmethegreenlight (Aus), was the priciest filly of the day, and she caught the eye of Lammerskraal Stud for an even R1 million. Part of the Klawervlei Stud draft, the Oct. 1 foal is a half-sister to stakes winner Sovereign Secret (SAf) (Dynasty {Saf}), with the duo a product of Equus Champion 2-Year-Old Filly All Is Secret (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}).

After the two-day stand wrapped, 21 horses had made seven figures, with indices up across all categories when compared to 2021. The total gross was R136,355,000 (£6,868,564/€8,188,574/$8,636,378) for 381 sold from 451 offered (84%), while the average was R357,887 (£18,028/€21,490/$22,667) (+29%) and the median came in at R250,000 (£12,593/€15,010/$15,834) (+25%).

What a Winter Filly Leads BSA November

A juvenile filly by What a Winter (SAf) brought R800,000 (£37,797/€45,051/$50,687) to top the Bloodstock South Africa November 2-Year-Old Sale at the TBA complex in Germiston on Saturday. Purchased by Hollywood Syndicate, the full-sister to G2 Camellia S. and G3 Man O'War Sprint winner Celestial Love (SAf) (What a Winter SAf) was consigned by Hemel 'N Aarde Stud as lot 29.

The sale's priciest colt was lot 49, a son of Querari (Ger), who went to Greg Bortz for R750,000. A half-brother to the stakes-placed duo of Twinkle Toes (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) and Light On Her Toes (SAf) (Gimmethegreenlight {Aus}), the trio is out of Grade 1 winner On Her Toes (SAf) (Western Winter).

At the end of the day's trade, 135 lots were sold for a gross of R18,800,000 (£888,464/€1,058,616/$1,190,758). The average was R140,299 and the median was R100,000 (£4,725/€5,632/$6,336). For the complete results, please visit the Bloodstock South Africa website.

BSA August 2-Year-Old Sale Posts Positive Metrics

The Bloodstock South Africa August 2-Year-Old Sale saw increases in both average and median during a positive two days of selling at the TBA Sales Complex in Johannesburg on Friday and Saturday. Of the 316 2-year-olds catalogued, 280 sold from 299 offered (93.6%) and they grossed R39,540,000 ($2,603,631/£1,898,177/€2,219,487). The average improved 15.3% to R141,750 ($9,328/£6,801/€7,952) and the median also rose to R90,000 ($5,922/£4,318/€5,049) (+28.5%).

Topping Saturday's proceedings was a colt by Dynasty (SAf) (lot 224) for R1,200,000 ($78,983/£57,590/€67,322), which equaled the record price set in November of 2020. Consigned by Wilgerbosdrift, the son of triple graded winner and four-time Grade 1-placed Welwitschia (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) was purchased by Form Bloodstock. He is already a full-brother to G2 Golden Slipper hero Desert Miracle (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}) and a half to G1 Summer Cup third Tree Tumbo (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}).

Second highest on the day was lot 291, a filly by What A Winter (SAf) from the Mauritzfontein draft. Out of the placed Dame Eleanor (Aus) (New Approach {Ire}), she was knocked down for R850,000 ($55,964/£40,803/€47,694) to Sandy Arundel acting on behalf of fellow KZN trainer Wendy Whitehead.

“The two days of the 2021 BSA National August 2yo Sale will go down as a vote of confidence in the future of SA racing by a broad spectrum of buyers,” said BSA CEO Michael Holmes. “For many, the bidding proved more competitive than may have been anticipated, with a diverse range of quality 2-year-olds from a wide range of stallions in great demand. The proof of the pudding is in the numbers, and we are appreciative of a great team effort that incorporated the vendors, buyers, underbidders and all the support teams.”

Gimmethegreenlight Leads National Yearling Sale

The two-day Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale drew to a close on Friday with trade at a satisfactory level despite the ongoing pandemic and political anxieties in the country. The aggregate of R102,470,000 (€5,974,884/£5,175,174) was up from R87,065,000 (€5,075,345/£4,397,155) in 2020, and while the average dipped 6% to R276,946 (€16,144/£13,986), the median was up to R200,000 (€11,658/£10,100) from R160,000 (€9,327/£8,080).

Young More Than Ready sire Gimmethegreenlight (Aus), currently the leading sire in South Africa, was the sale's leading sire by aggregate and supplied three yearlings who made in excess of R1,000,000 (€58,308/£50,504), including a colt out of triple Group 1 winner All Is Secret (SAf) (lot 351) who topped the sale on day two at R2,800,000 (€163,264/£141,412) when bought by Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock. All Is Secret, South Africa's champion 2-year-old filly of 2012, is also the dam of the listed-winning Sovereign Secret (SAf) (Dynasty {SAf}). Gimmethegreenlight also supplied a seven-figure filly on the day in the form of Varsfontein Stud's lot 232, who was also bought by Malherbe. She is the first foal out of the listed-placed Scandola (SAf) (Fort Wood).

Also featuring on Friday was a colt by Twice Over (GB) who fetched R1,400,000 (€81,611/£70,706) from John Freeman. Lot 407, the son of Group 3 winner Cash Register (SAf) (Casey Tibbs {Ire}), is a half-brother to three stakes winners as well as the Group 1-placed Chat Ching (Saf) (Duke Of Marmalade {Ire}).
