BHA Signs Armed Forces Covenant

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) signed an Armed Forces Covenant during a ceremony at Horse Guards Parade on Friday. The agreement was co-signed by Catherine Beloff, BHA Director of Legal, Governance and Business partners, and Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Armitage, Commanding Officer of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

Following this show of commitment, and as a 'forces-friendly' employer, the BHA will:

  • Supporting existing employees who choose to be members of the Reserve forces–accommodating their training and development wherever possible.
  • Continuing to recruit from the community of veteran service personnel, both directly and through the Career Transition Partnership.
  • Providing support for the spouses and partners of Service personnel, with employment opportunities and additional flexibility around leave for duty–before, during and after deployment.

Catherine Beloff, BHA Director of Legal, Governance and Business partners, said, “British horseracing has a strong and longstanding connection with the Armed Forces, and the BHA is proud to reinforce these close ties by signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

“Through this pledge, we will continue to ensure that all current and future colleagues from the Forces community are not only treated with fairness and respect, but always have the opportunity to flourish in their role.”

BHA Halts Saliva Testing Programme

The anti-doping saliva testing pilot programme has been paused by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). Started in May of 2021, the programme was halted due to the negative laboratory follow-up analysis requested after a point of care racecourse non-negative saliva sample donated by jockey Sean Levey at Sandown on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

The BHA said in a statement, “A review of the pilot, which has tested more than 1,300 samples, is now underway to determine what can be learned and agree with the [Professional Jockeys' Association] (PJA) on a combined approach to a robust testing model. We will also be working with Sean Levey to determine how his positive sample came about in order to understand what challenges could be faced and different approaches that could be used when testing in the future. The pilot was a collaboration with the PJA and there has been a notable reduction in positive cases since its inception. It's important we incorporate all feedback and make improvements where necessary to ensure we continue keeping racing safe, fair and clean.”
