Lady Speightspeare Goes From Turf To Main Track To Take Bessarabian At Woodbine

Canada's champion 2-year-old filly of 2020, Lady Speightspeare has been a turf specialist so far in her career, going undefeated over the grass at Woodbine. In the Grade 2 Bessarabian Stakes at the Toronto, Ontario racetrack, the 3-year-old daughter made her transition to the all-weather surface a winning one, taking the second graded stakes of her career by four lengths.

In a field of nine, Lady Speightspeare was away in second, with Our Secret Agent taking the lead in the race's early strides. With jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson in the saddle, Lady Speightspeare transitioned from the rail to the outside of Our Secret Agent as they approached the far turn, pulling even with the leader as they entered the stretch.

In the Woodbine straight, Lady Speightspeare showed an impressive turn-of-foot on the Tapeta, pulling clear by a length at the top of the stretch and then pulling away to win with ease. Our Secret Agent hung on for second and La Libertee was third.

The final time for the seven furlongs was 1:21.03. Find this race's chart here.

Lady Speightspeare paid $12.90, $5.70, and $3.90. Our Secret Agent paid $2.90 and $2.50. La Libertee paid $6.20.

Bred in Kentucky by owner Charles Fipke, Lady Speightspeare is by Speightstown out of the Theatrical (IRE) mare Lady Shakespeare. She is trained by Roger Attfield. With her win in the G2 Bessarabian, the 3-year-old filly has two wins in two starts in 2021 for a perfect lifetime record of four wins in four starts and career earnings of $264,779.

Hard-Trying Juxtapose Steps Up For Bessarabian

Juxtapose, a 4-year-old daughter of Verrazano-Aldara, goes after her first added-money win in Saturday's Grade 2 $175,000 Bessarabian Stakes, at Woodbine.

The seven-furlong main track feature for fillies and mares, three-years-old and upward, has drawn nine starters, including Juxtapose.

Trained by Steve Owens, the Kentucky-bred heads into her second straight stakes date after notching a third in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron on Oct. 10 at Woodbine.

That effort came after a seven-furlong grass win, the sixth victory of her career, on Aug. 22 at Woodbine.

Sent off at 8-1, Juxtapose rallied from fourth at the stretch call to claim a head score over firm going on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

The dark bay brings a record of 6-0-3 from 13 starts into the Bessarabian for owners James Redekop and Stefan Ferrario.

“Juxtapose, she's a nice little filly who tries hard every race,” praised Owens. “She's a little difficult to train, but she gives 110 percent every time we take her out there in the afternoon.”

Bred by Alvin D. Haynes Estate, Juxtapose debuted on October 5, 2019, finishing sixth in a 5 ½-furlong sprint over the Toronto oval's main track.

Two weeks later, she broke her maiden, the start of a three-race win streak.

“She's always been a very consistent horse,” said Owens. “She's very aggressive in the morning, but she's all business when the gate opens.”

Last year, she went 2-0-2 from six starts. In 2021, she's 2-0-1 from four appearances.

Owens, closing in on 300 career wins, has a good idea of what to expect from Juxtapose in the Bessarabian.

“She's a little better, I feel, on the turf, but she'll run on broken glass. She does whatever you need her to do out there.”

If recent patterns are any indication of what's in store for Juxtapose on Saturday, Owens will no doubt be encouraged.

In her last seven starts, she's finished third, first, fifth, first, fifth, first and third, respectively.

“If that's the pattern, we really do [have something to look forward to]. She's at a good distance. She's cutting back from a mile-and-a-sixteenth and she had a really lovely work on the weekend, :48, out in a minute and one-fifth. She had a really nice work two weeks ago that set her up for that one, :59 and change, and galloped out in 1:12.1. So, she's coming into the race in the right condition.”

Trainer Roger Attfield and Kinghaven Farms teamed to win the first two editions of the Bessarabian – in 1985 with Summer Mood and one year later with Playlist.

Conditioner Josie Carroll has won three runnings of the Bessarabian, including in 2017 and 2018, both with Moonlit Promise. She also won with Smart Surprise in 2008 and sends out Gidgetta this year.

The race is named after Canada's champion older female of 1986, a multiple stakes winning daughter of Vice Regent trained by Michael Doyle and owned by Eaton Hall Farm. She finished her racing career with an 18-5-4 mark from 37 starts.

Also on Saturday, 10 fillies and mares, three-years-old and upward, will travel 1 ¼-miles on the Tapeta in the Grade 3 $150,000 Maple Leaf Stakes.

Starters include the Mark Casse-trained foursome of Art of Almost, Broadway Lady, Crystal Glacier and Skygaze.

Graham Motion will send out Sister Otoole, a four-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Amira's Prince (IRE), who sports a 2-3-3 record from 10 starts.

The race, inaugurated in 1892, was won by Heavenly Curlin last year.

Conn Smythe, principal owner of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs from 1927 to 1961 and builder of Maple Leaf Gardens, leads all owners with seven Maple Leaf crowns.

The Bessarabian is carded as race eight on Saturday's 11-race program. The Maple Leaf goes as race seven. First post is 12:55 p.m. Fans can also watch and wager on all the action through HPIbet.com and the Dark Horse Bets app.

Artie’s Princess Holds Off Boardroom For Bessarabian Success

Artie's Princess, a 3-year-old daughter of We Miss Artie, won her second straight stakes at Woodbine, and notched her first graded crown, in taking the $197,750 Bessarabian (Grade 2) at the Toronto, Ontario, oval on Saturday.

The trio of Jakarta, Souper Escape and Artie's Princess zipped out of the gate in the seven-furlong Bessarabian, matching strides through an opening-quarter mile in a swift :22.31. It was Jakarta who eventually assumed command with her other two rivals tracking her every move. Artie's Princess, who came into the race off a sharp score in the Ruling Angel Stakes on September 12, sat in third for Kazushi Kimura.

Jakarta continued to call the shots on the front end, taking her rivals through a half-mile clip in :44.41, as Princess Artie kept the pacesetter well within her sights.

As the field turned for home, Artie's Princess surged to the lead, holding a two-length advantage at Robert Geller's stretch call. Looking like a lock mid-way down the lane, the Wesley Ward trainee had to fend off a late-race meeting with hard-charging Boardroom, who fell a head short of collaring the winner. Our Secret Agent rallied to net third, while Amalfi Coast, last year's Bessarabian champ, finished fourth.

“Basically, if I could go to the front I wanted to go to the front, but I knew that just the two horses wanted to go to the front, and it looked a little bit fast that's why I was just patient, watched from behind,” said Kimura, who earlier in the card teamed with Field Pass to take the Grade 3 Ontario Derby Stakes. “She was just so comfortable today.”

The final time was 1:20.90.

“I felt [jockey Luis Contreras and Boardroom coming] but she wasn't that tired and kept going,” offered Kimura. “I felt I could win.”

The ultra-consistent filly, bred and owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, now has three wins from four outings in 2020. Last year, the Ontario-bred went 2-1-0 from three starts, taking her first two races before a runner-up effort in the Frost King Stakes in November.

Her sire, We Miss Artie, also owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, won the 2014 Plate Trial at Woodbine before finishing third in the Queen's Plate.

Sent off as the 5-2 choice, Artie's Princess paid $7, $3.80 and $3.30. She combined with Boardroom ($5, $3.90) for a 4-2 $34.40 exactor. Our Secret Agent ($4.30) completed a 4-2-7 triactor worth $156.90. Amalfi Coast rounded a 4-2-7-5 $1 Superfecta that returned $277.35. Outburst was scratched.
