$15,000 Claim Timeless Bounty Springs 50-1 Upset In $250,000 Steel Valley Sprint

On a brisk afternoon in Austintown, Ohio it was Timeless Bounty and rider Malcolm Franklin at 50-1 who found themselves across the wire first in the $250,000 Steel Valley Sprint at Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course. The day's races also marked a new wagering record for the Steel Valley Sprint race card and the race itself as handicappers wagered $1,745,129 and $343,665 respectively.

Claimed for $15,000 on Oct. 6 of this year, Timeless Bounty has proven himself a smart claim delivering both his owner, Willow's Green Stables, LLC, and trainer, David Wilson, Jr., their first stake victory. A son of Elusive Hour and the first foal out of the Even the Score mare, Nava, Timeless Bounty was bred in Michigan by Elkhorn Oaks, Inc. who was on hand to witness the victory as the owner and trainer of fifth place finisher Channel Fury.

Out of the gates it was Beren and Jaxon Traveler who showed the best speed with Beren quickly pulling ahead to a one length advantage through a first quarter in :22.27. As the field reached the three-eighths pole Jaxon Traveler began to rally, pulling even with Beren as they clocked a half in :45.15. The pair battled gamely for close to an eighth of a mile before Beren finally broke free, racing through five-eighths in :57.69. Beren appeared to be clear of rivals however Timeless Bounty, who had begun his move midway through the turn from near the back of the pack, was flying down the center of the track. Timeless Bounty ran down the leader to claim victory by three quarters of a length and stop the clock in 1:11.01.

Beren finished second with Mister Luigi and Jaxon Traveler a little over two lengths back in third and fourth, respectively. Following a steward's inquiry, Mister Luigi would be disqualified and placed seventh behind Baby Yoda for interference mid-stretch. The official order of finish was Timeless Bounty, Beren, Jaxon Traveler, Ahimelech, Channel Fury, Baby Yoda, A Few too Many, Real Talk, Insofar, Kiltoom, and Newbomb.

Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course races Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with a first race post time of 12:45pm and Saturday with a first race post time of 12:15pm. The fall race meet runs October 22 – December 30, 2021 with three unique cards on Friday, October 22, Friday, November 26, and Thursday, December 30 all with a first race post time of 12:45pm. The 2022 Winter/Spring race meet dates run January 1, 2022 – April 16, 2022 following the same Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday format.

‘Jackie’ Looms Large in Gallant Bob

MGISW Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) stands well above the rest of the field in the GII Gallant Bob S. at Parx Saturday. Winner of the GI Hopeful S. and GI Champagne S. last season, the bay captured the GII Pat Day Mile May 1 on the GI Kentucky Derby undercard and missed by a neck next out in Belmont's GI Woody Stephens S. June 5. Dominating by 7 1/4 lengths in Saratoga's GII Amsterdam S. Aug. 1, the $95,000 KEESEP purchase denied previously unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Life is Good (Into Mischief) by a neck after a gritty stretch battle in the Spa's GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. 27 days later. He earned a gaudy 107 Beyer Speed Figure and is the only member of this field with a triple-digit Beyer.

Also exiting the Jerkens is fifth-place finisher Newbomb (Speightstown), who romped by eight lengths in a Saratoga allowance prior to that event Aug. 7.

Carlos David saddles Real Talk (Gemologist) off a decisive score in Monmouth's Jersey Shore S. Aug. 15. A Gulfstream optional claimer winner June 4, he was second next out in the Carry Back S. July 10.

Hometown hero Beren (Weigelia) looks to take his Parx record to five wins from nine starts Saturday. Crushing the field by 9 1/2 lengths in an off-the-turf renewal of the Crowd Pleaser S. going two turns here June 22, the bay was well-beaten when seventh in Saratoga's nine-panel Curlin S. July 30. He returned to winning ways with a 6 1/2-length defeat of Marvalous Mike (Uncle Lino) in the track-and-trip Parx Summer Sprint S. Aug. 24.

‘Monumental Chore,’ But ‘Honest’ Beren Takes On Jackie’s Warrior In Parx’s Gallant Bob

After a year away, it's good to be back. That's what you've heard on the backstretch at Parx as the days get closer to the biggest day in racing in the Keystone State. The Pennsylvania Derby is back.

Following a year's hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, a 13-race card comes to Parx Saturday, Eight stakes races – highlighted by a pair of $1 million Grade 1 races, the Cotillion and Pennsylvania Derby – worth $3.4 million will be held.

“It will be good to see the nation get a chance to look at us and look at the quality product we put out here,” veteran Parx trainer Robert “Butch” Reid said. “There are good horsemen here with good horses. To get the national press is a very good thing for the track. It was like last year never happened because we missed out on our big day.”

Reid has horses running in five races. He will send out Beren in the Grade 2, $300,000 Gallant Bob for 3-year-olds where he will tackle the imposing Jackie's Warrior.

Beren, owned by St. Omer's Farm and Christopher Feifarek, is 6-1 on the morning line and will be ridden by Frankie Pennington, the second leading rider at the Parx meet with 121 wins.

In eight career starts at Parx, Beren has four wins and two seconds. Overall, he has six wins in 12 career starts. The Gallant Bob will be his second graded stakes start; he was third in the Grade 3 Bay Shore at Belmont in April.

“It's obviously a monumental chore,” Reid said about going up against Jackie's Warrior, the 4-5 morning line favorite. “But the horse always gives a good effort and we will certainly give it a try.”

Beren is coming off a front-running 6 ½-length win in the Parx Summer Sprint Stakes on Aug. 24. His trainer says his horse does not need the lead to win.

“He won a race at Belmont (Gold Fever on May 9) and he stumbled out of the gate, righted himself, and ran really well,” Reid said. “He is just an honest horse.”

Reid has also entered 6-year-old Smooth B in the five-furlong Grade 3, $300,000 Turf Monster and Ninetypercentbrynn in the $200,000 Plum Pretty at 1 1/16 miles.

Pennsylvania Leaderboard Presented By Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: Beren Back On Top By Incentive Earnings

Beren started the year as the leader by Pennsylvania incentive earnings, and the colt regained that position at the end of June after coming home to conquer stakes competition.

The 3-year-old Weigelia colt has compiled $163,256 in incentive money for his connections through a combination of Pennsylvania-bred stakes purses, breeder's awards, stallion awards, and owner bonuses.

He jumped out to an early lead in the standings through the first two months of 2021 with a trio of starts at Parx Racing, including a maiden win and an allowance optional claiming score, before leaving the state for New York for a spring campaign. He performed well out-of-state, taking a pair of stakes races at Belmont Park, but his absence allowed fellow Pennsylvania-born star Wait For It to usurp the lead by incentive earnings.

Beren returned to Pennsylvania in June for the Crowd Pleaser Stakes at Parx on June 22, where he drew away effortlessly under jockey Frankie Pennington to win the 1 1/16-mile race by 9 1/2 lengths.

Most recently, Beren came back to the Keystone State once again to dominate the Parx Summer Sprint Stakes by a front-running 6 1/2 lengths.

Robert Reid Jr. trains Beren for Christopher Feifarek and the St. Omer's Farm of Susan Quick.

Beren's $65,876 in breeder's awards through the end of June was comfortably the most earned by a Pennsylvania-bred. Breeders Quick and Feifarek earned a 50 percent bonus on the purse for Beren's maiden special weight score on Feb. 10 at Parx, and a 40 percent bonus for his other in-state wins.

The $15,349 Beren earned in stallion awards for Weigelia's owner Wyn Oaks Farm was also the most of any Pennsylvania horse at the cutoff point. Stallions earn a 10 percent purse share of all top-three finishes in the state, giving Beren four races where he generated stallion awards through the end of June.

Weigelia a 21-year-old son of Safely's Mark, sat in second by Pennsylvania stallion awards through the end of June, with $50,896. He trails only the late Pennsylvania stalwart Jump Start, who had $73,763 in awards at the same point in the year.

Wait For It, a son of Uptowncharlybrown, held on to second in the incentive earnings standings by a slim margin over Trolley Ride, a Flashy Bull mare whose most notable effort this season was a victory in the Lyphard Stakes at Penn National on May 28.
