The Comeback Filly: How Bold and Bossy Made it Back to the Starting Gate

Many will recall the peculiar story of Bold and Bossy (Strong Mandate), the unlucky filly who got loose before her juvenile debut at Ellis Park last summer and was caught over 30 minutes later after making it to the interstate and crossing state lines only to be involved in a barn fire the very next morning. Now, her trainer Michael Ann Ewing hopes that soon, people will remember Bold and Bossy for something more.

Almost a year after that ill-fated weekend in Henderson, Kentucky, Bold and Bossy is not only back to optimal health, but she just recently made her first start in a $17,000 maiden special weight at Belterra Park. The filly grew leg weary and settled for third, but for Ewing and those who had a hand in nurturing her back to health, the race was unquestionably a major victory.

“It's sort of like being a parent and you have a child that has a great difficulty or a sickness or injury,” Ewing explained. “You nurse them and you don't know what the outcome is going to be and then when it's really positive, there's a very big sense of, I guess, pride. There was a lot of commitment there, a lot of time and a lot of energy. I'm just happy to see her healthy and happy.”

A $15,000 Fasig-Tipton October graduate, Bold and Bossy was one of three yearlings purchased by Ewing in the hopes of having success in lucrative summer 2-year-old races. As the trio went through the breaking process at The Thoroughbred Center, Bold and Bossy was by far the most difficult trainee.

“She was quirky,” Ewing recalled. “Even after six weeks as they were starting to gallop in the field, she would still throw in some bucks. The other two would be walking through the gate, but she would want to just run through.”

Despite her headstrong character, the filly proved to be the most forward of the three and was the first to make it to the races in August. Ewing entered her at Ellis Park, but the filly got spooked alongside the pony in the post parade. She lost balance and fell on her side, unseating jockey Miguel Mena, and was soon off and running.

“I was back in Lexington thinking how we got her all the way down there and now we were going to have to start back at zero,” Ewing recalled. “My assistant Kelsey called me and told me she was gone. I said, 'What do you mean, she's gone?' and Kelsey told me that she had disappeared.”

Escaping the outriders, Bold and Bossy sped down U.S. 41 N, Interstate 69 and Veterans Memorial Parkway. She crossed state lines into Indiana before she finally started to tire and was caught by a policeman and trainer Jack Hancock. She returned to Ellis in the horse ambulance and immediately received fluids.

Ewing opted to keep the filly at Ellis overnight so that she could rehydrate and relax before shipping home in the cool of the morning instead of loading her in a trailer for a three-hour haul home in the heat of the afternoon that day. It was a good idea in theory, but early that next morning, the receiving barn caught on fire.

“She was actually rescued by one of our groom's brothers,” Ewing noted. “I think there were five horses in the receiving barn and she was the last one out. She had been burned and we were worried about smoke inhalation.”

Bold and Bossy was back in Lexington at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital by 9 a.m. that morning and spent three days in an air conditioned stall there. While the filly had no lung damage, the burns on her topline eventually led to her losing the hair and skin from her withers to her hindquarters. She had also lost two shoes when she got loose and had incurred severe hoof damage from running on the hot pavement of the highway.

When Bold and Bossy made it home to The Thoroughbred Center, additional fans were put in the stall to keep flies off her injuries. She was hand-walked daily until November and then went to the farm of Ewing's veterinarian Dr. Joe Morgan where she enjoyed daily turnout and continued to heal.

Early this year, Bold and Bossy again returned to The Thoroughbred Center. Her feet were healthy and while she did have scarring along her topline, the burns were completely healed. Ewing wasn't sure if the 3-year-old would be interested in returning to training, but she figured it was worth a shot.

“Since we're a racing barn and I bought her to race, I thought we would just see,” Ewing explained. “We put a saddle on her and we put a couple of extra pads on to protect her. Our number one concern was if the scarring would bother her, but it didn't. She went back into training and never had a day that she didn't want to go to the track or that she went off her feed. She was very forward and happy.”

As a member of the board of directors for the Secretariat Center, Ewing was quick to add that if the filly had not been interested in racing or had been in any way uncomfortable, she would have found a second career.

For now, Ewing said that they are pointing Bold and Bossy toward a second start at Belterra Park in the coming weeks. She admitted that the filly would probably never drop to the claiming ranks.

“It is a business, but there's so much time and energy and maybe fondness with her that I'm not sure I'd want to put her in for a tag. There's an extra aspect of making sure she has a really good outcome.”

Looking back on all that has happened with the appropriately named filly since she first arrived at Ewing's barn as a yearling, the trainer said she is proud of all that her team has accomplished in getting Bold and Bossy back to the starting gate.

“[When the fire happened], I couldn't believe it,” she said. “I thought that this filly was such a bad-luck horse. But now, I think maybe she's a good-luck horse because she survived. When I look at her now, which is almost a year to when this happened, she's healthy and she has matured and it's really unbelievable. I think she will still improve. She might be a next-time winner. I'm always confident. If you're not confident, you wouldn't be a trainer.”

The Week in Review: While Racing Sleeps Late, MLB Opts for Morning Betting

Since the advent of the simulcasting era 30 years ago, I've never understood why some enterprising track somewhere hasn't seized a late-morning first-post slot and carved out its own niche at a time of day when no other pari-mutuel competition on the continent is running.

Be it midweek in the winter, when most of the fair-to-middling Eastern time zone tracks do little to distinguish their products, or as a Saturday special during the summer when some C-level track could have an uncontested advantage for several hours as a lead-in to the attention-grabbing cards at Saratoga, the 10 a.m. to noon Eastern stretch remains an uncharted chasm.

Four years ago this month, shortly after the legalization of sports betting in the United States, I wrote a morning racing-related column for TDN that stated, “The time slot is there for the taking. In real estate, the money-making mantra is 'location, location, location.' The equivalent in simulcasting–if you're not a top track on the totem pole–is 'timing, timing, timing.'”

The revisit of this topic will tack on a slight correction to that 2018 story: The late-morning time slot is no longer completely wide open in terms of the overall wagering landscape. Major League Baseball (MLB) now sees Sunday morning starts at 11:30 a.m. Eastern as a lucrative opportunity.

Although the Sunday morning baseball games debuted with a soft-ish launch, MLB has inked a multi-year deal to lay claim to that time slot (some of the games later in the season will begin at noon, which is still at least an hour earlier than most traditional afternoon starts).

The streamed-only games can only be viewed by online subscribers who pay a monthly fee to watch them. And while MLB revenue executives are championing the early starts as a way to reach new fans outside of cable TV as viewing habits change, the unspoken but obvious message is that pro sports are staking out new territory, time-wise, to maximize revenue from gambling partnerships.

The National Football League figured this out with Monday Night Football broadcasts back in 1970. Although critics were initially skeptical that viewers would tune in to watch (and although it was illegal at the time, bet on) whatever two teams happened to be matched just because it was the only action on the tube, Monday Night Football eventually morphed into an eyeball-capturing juggernaut that spawned only-game-in-town football broadcast strategies on Thursday and Sunday evenings.

A heat wave across the Midwest at the end of June caused both and Churchill Downs (10:30 a.m.) Belterra Park (11:35 a.m.) to experiment with morning racing as a means to keep horses from competing at the hottest point of the afternoon. The one-off post time switches weren't pre-arranged with much notice or fanfare, hence a handle comparison wouldn't be of much value in these instances.

And since Churchill is an A-list track that has the benefit of lights to add flexibility to its scheduling of post times, regular morning racing there wouldn't make much sense.

But you could make a cogent case for Belterra taking a flyer on morning racing.

The Ohio track's current Tuesday-through-Friday schedule with 12:35 p.m. posts causes it to get lost in the shuffle against Saratoga, Monmouth, Gulfstream and Colonial Downs during the month of July. It would even benefit from standing out from the likes of Finger Lakes, Thistledown and Horseshoe Indianapolis, all of which overlap to some degree depending on the day of the week.

Beyer Blitz

Three Grade II stakes winners earned triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures last Saturday. Which was most impressive?

From a raw talent perspective, Life Is Good (Into Mischief)'s 112 wiring of the John Nerud S. over seven furlongs at Belmont Park was outright scary. Now 7-for-9 lifetime and having put together a string of seven consecutive triple-digit Beyers, this 'TDN Rising Star' scored by five after chewing up no-slouch rival Speaker's Corner (Street Sense). But beyond those two, the four-horse field was scant on competition, which allowed Life Is Good to motor home without any sort of a stretch tussle.

Fellow 'Rising Star' Charge It (Tapit) posted a gaudy 23-length victory in the one-turn-mile Dwyer S. at Belmont. His heaviest lifting involved bumping aside a pesky rival five-eighths out so he could maneuver off the fence and reel in the pacemaker, thus becoming the fourth also-ran out of the GI Kentucky Derby to win a next-out start. He earned a 111 Beyer, but only one of his five rivals had ever won a stakes (which was for Delaware-bred 2-year-olds last year), so the quality of competition angle applies here too.

It's difficult to believe that a horse can win five straight races with triple-digit Beyers yet still be considered a bit under the radar, but that's been the case with Olympiad (Speightstown), who is bound to get a lot more attention and respect after his no-nonsense cuffing of a decent field in Saturday's Stephen Foster S. over nine furlongs at Churchill.

Olympiad emerged from a five-horse, first-turn speed scrimmage to be a stalking second through robust splits. He then blasted off at the quarter pole and dug in furiously to repel a wall of contenders off the turn. His presence near the head of affairs early in the race combined with an ability to withstand significant pressure late to score by 2 1/4 lengths lends a nice glow of legitimacy to his 111 Beyer.

(Not yet) the end of an era

It might be a stretch to say Dr. Blarney (Dublin) is the “Last of the Mohicans.” But the 9-year-old sure looks like he'll wind up his career as the most impactful of the dwindling number of remaining Massachusetts-breds.

On July 4 at Finger Lakes, the good doctor won his 26th lifetime race, storming from off the pace to win a three-way photo by a neck for owner/breeder Joe DiRico and trainer Karl Grusmark.

The victory was even sweeter because Dr. Blarney was reunited with Tammi Piermarini, his horsebacking partner for most of his 37-race career.

Piermarini, 55, is the continent's third-winningest female jockey. She hurt her knee in a starting gate accident last November, and the ride on Dr. Blarney Monday was her first race back since that accident.

Fittingly, like her multiple stakes-winning mount, Piermarini was also born in Massachusetts, having started her career back in 1985 at Boston's Suffolk Downs.

Suffolk Downs is now three years defunct and the Massachusetts-bred program began to erode about a decade before the track closed for good in 2019.

Dr. Blarney won Massachusetts-bred stakes at least once a year between ages two and seven (to spend its remaining purse funds that were earmarked for stakes, the Massachusetts breeders' association ran those races at Fort Erie in 2020). Six of his lifetime victories have been by margins between 10 and 20 lengths.

Although many of those romps came at the mercy of overmatched restricted-stakes competition, he's also won a black-type stakes at Delaware Park and has bested open-company allowance horses at Finger Lakes.

Belterra Adjusting Post Times Due to Heat

With a forecast for extreme temperatures and heat indexes, post time at Belterra Park for Tuesday and Wednesday, June 21 and 22, will be pushed forward by one hour, with first post scheduled for 11:35 a.m. on both days.

Similarly hot conditions forced the cancellation of racing at Belterra June 14 through June 16, while officials at Churchill Downs about 90 minutes southwest of Cincinnati decided to call off live racing June 15 and 16. The live card at Churchill Wednesday, June 22, will begin at 10:30 a.m. in order to avoid the hottest part of the day, where temperatures could touch triple digits. Horseshoe Indianapolis also lost three cards to the heat wave.

Another Sonny Day at Belterra Park

It was back to business as ususal for jockey Sonny Leon on Friday afternoon as he returned to Belterra Park six days after his ride of a lifetime aboard Rich Strike (Keen Ice) in an unforgettable edition of the GI Kentucky Derby.

Coming off his first-ever graded stakes win in the Run for the Roses, Leon ran second in race one, third in race two, and won going away in race three. Fittingly, the 3 3/4-length victory aboard Runway Rosie (Tonalist) in the $18,800 allowance contest was for trainer Eric Reed. Prior to the race in the paddock, he shared an enthusiastic high-five with Rich Strike's groom, Jerry Dixon Jr. After the winner's circle photo, he posed with a '2022 Kentucky Derby Winner' sign and the crowd applauded as they watched a congratulatory video on the main screen with well-wishes from Belterra's racing community.

Leon wrapped up Friday's card with two more second-place finishes and a win in the finale.

“We had a very good moment last week but right now we've got to go back to reality,” Leon said at the end of the day. “We had a couple wins today. We made a Sonny day.”

Throughout the afternoon and even half an hour after the races had finished, fans gathered around the paddock waving racing programs and Kentucky Derby Woodford Reserve bottles. Leon willingly obliged their requests for signatures and photos, taking in all the added fanfare in stride.

“That was fun,” he said. “This is my first time having a moment like this. I took pictures with a lot of people and gave a lot of signatures.”

A native of Venezuela, Leon moved to the U.S. in 2015. He first started out at Gulfstream Park before moving his tack to the Ohio and Kentucky circuits. With several jockey titles at Mahoning Valley already to his credit, he is currently ranked among the top five jockeys at this year's Belterra race meet.

Leon first rode Rich Strike last December at Fair Grounds, finishing fifth to Epicenter (Not This Time) in the Gun Runner S. Leon described Rich Strike as “a little green” in the race in New Orleans, but noted that the colt gained valuable experience and learned a lot since then.

Leon said he was not nervous as Kentucky Derby day dawned. He was just thrilled to be running in the Kentucky Derby.

“My dream came true when Eric Reed called me Friday morning and said, 'Man, we got in,'” Leon recalled. “That was my best moment when I heard from him. I got super excited. I spoke with my wife and she was excited. I didn't know he was going to win the Kentucky Derby, but I knew in that moment that I would ride in the Kentucky Derby. I wanted to just enjoy my moment and that's what I did.”

The ultra-impressive ride Leon gave Rich Strike that day has been analyzed all week, but for the jockey himself, he believes the keys to his success were about having patience and knowing his horse.

“I knew they went fast in the beginning,” he explained. “I wanted to go to the inside to save ground, which was perfect. We saved a couple lengths there. I stayed far away because that's the way this horse likes to run. When I got to the three-eighths, I found a lot of traffic but I didn't get desperate. That was a good move, to be patient. When turning for home, I had to wait until they opened up the rail. I didn't know where to go because I still had a few horses in front of me. The rail opened up and wow, that was amazing because my horse got clear and he answered beautifully.”

'Wow' is a term Leon uses a lot when talking about Rich Strike and their accomplishments together.

“We have a very good connection and that is what was so special for me,” he said. “What can I say? We did it.”

On Thursday, Rich Strike's connections announced that they would skip the GI Preakness S. and instead, point toward the GI Belmont S. It was a decision that Leon supports wholeheartedly.

“I think it was a very wise move,” he said. “The horse needed some time to get a good recovery and get some rest. The Belmont is going to be a perfect distance for him. It's a long distance and a deep track. I think he's going to be tough.”

Until then, Leon plans to soak up every opportunity that his outstanding Derby performance provides, be it in a Grade I at Belmont or a claiming race at Belterra.

“My next goal is to go to the Belmont and enjoy that moment. It's a big race. It's going to be a tough race, but I think my horse, Rich Strike, can do it. After that we'll see what happens, but I'm happy to go back home and go to Belterra Park to win a couple more races.”
