$1 Million Bonus Offered To Any Japan-Based Horse Who Wins Belmont Stakes

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced it will again offer a $1 million bonus to the connections of any Japan-based horse who wins the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes slated for Saturday, June 5 at Belmont Park.

The three-day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival from Thursday, June 3 through Saturday, June 5 will encompass 17 total stakes, including eight Grade 1s on Belmont Stakes Day, capped by the $1.5 million “Test of the Champion” for 3-year-olds in the 1 ½-mile final leg of the Triple Crown.

Tickets for the 2021 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival are not yet on sale to the public. Additional information and the timing of the general on-sale will be released in the coming weeks.

The $1 million bonus, offered for the first time in 2017, is in addition to the $800,000 winner's share of the Belmont Stakes, which is contested at 1 ½ miles [2,400 meters], the same distance as classic races in Japan.

In 2017, the Japan-based Lani competed in all three legs of the Triple Crown, with his best showing being a third-place finish in the Belmont Stakes.

The Japan-based Master Fencer, who was elevated to sixth in the 2019 Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, closed to finish fifth in that year's Grade 1 Belmont.

To qualify for the bonus, a horse must have made at least three starts in Japan prior to starting in the Belmont and must be nominated to North America's Triple Crown series. In the event of a dead heat, the connections will receive a $600,000 bonus.

Upcoming Belmont Meet To Offer Traditional Pick 6 Wager With 15 Percent Takeout

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced a return to the traditional Pick 6 wager, featuring a $1 bet minimum, at the upcoming 48-day Belmont Park spring/summer meet.

The Pick 6 will launch on Thursday, April 22, Opening Day of the lucrative Belmont spring/summer meet which will feature 59 stakes races worth $16.95 million in total purse money.

The implementation of a retail-only $1 Pick 6 is part of a pilot program in response to horseplayer interest in wagers that reward the daily player with the opportunity for impressive payouts.

“Our community of horseplayers have expressed interest in a traditional Pick 6 wager that will provide a challenging sequence and significant payouts,” said Joe Longo, NYRA General Manager of Content Services. “By raising the bet's base minimum to $1, the Pick 6 remains an accessible multi-race wager for players of varying bankrolls while maintaining the possibility for a lucrative carryover day.”

Featuring a $1 bet minimum and 15 percent takeout, the Pick 6 wager requires bettors to select the first-place finisher of six designated races on the card. A total of 75 percent of the full pool, minus takeout, will be distributed to bettors who select the first-place finisher of all six races. A consolation payout of 25 percent of the net pool will be distributed to tickets selecting 5-of-6 winners. In the event there are no tickets with six winners, there will be a carryover of 75 percent of the net pool into the next day of the meet with the remaining 25 percent of the net pool distributed as a consolation payout to tickets selecting the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races on the card. On carryover days, the Pick 6 is offered with a 24 percent takeout.

The Pick 6 replaces the Empire 6, a jackpot style wager featuring a $0.20 bet minimum first offered in August 2019 at Saratoga Race Course.

Potts: ‘This Industry Is A Family With A Fierce Love Of The Horse That Triumphs Over Anything Else’

Trainer Wayne Potts posted the following on Facebook Tuesday evening, after two of his horses tragically perished in a barn fire at Belmont Park:

I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who assisted in removing my horses from the fire this evening. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to every single one of you that put yourselves at risk to make sure 58 horses are able to see another day. The actions of so many this evening proved that this industry is a family with a fierce love of the horse that triumphs over anything else.

I am heartbroken to say that Beastie D and American Sailor were both unable to be saved and perished. Beastie D, a 3-year-old Verrazano colt was a recent purchase from the Sale in Ocala. While we didn't have him long, his presence was felt as he was an individual with an abundance of class and potential.

American Sailor was apart of my family and took my operation to a new level. We were preparing for a 9-year-old campaign and he had been training fantastic. This was a horse that owed me absolutely nothing. He was the pride and joy of my stable and was the horse that took me places in my career that I had only ever dreamed of going. Sailor was so loved by everyone that worked with and around him. He was one of the sweetest horses to be around in the stall, but when he stepped foot on the track- he was nothing but business. He was family.

I want to also express my condolences to my owners Dan Eubanks and Raj and Vedhya Jagnanan who love their horses dearly & to my staff who go above and beyond day in and day out to make sure our horses receive the best care.

Thank you again to everyone who has reached out. It is much appreciated.

UAE Derby Winner Rebel’s Romance To Skip Louisville, Await Belmont Stakes

The impressive winner of last month's UAE Derby in Dubai, Godolphin's Rebel's Romance will not take his place in the starting gate for the May 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. According to a Godolphin tweet on Wednesday, the 3-year-old son of Dubawi will instead be headed to the Belmont Stakes on June 4.

“Having spoken to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, we feel he needs more time and he will now be aimed at the last leg of the US Triple Crown, the G1 Belmont S.,” trainer Charlie Appleby said in the Godolphin tweet.

A winner of four of his five lifetime starts, including two on all-weather surfaces in Britain last year, Rebel's Romance was only defeated when shipping over to Saudi Arabia in February. He finished fourth in the Saudi Derby behind Pink Kamehameha. In the UAE Derby back on his home track at Meydan a month later, Rebel's Romance defeated that rival and 12 others for an impressive 5 1/2-length victory over frontrunner Panadol.

Reflecting on his latest big race win on Dubai World Cup night, Appleby said: “(Rebel's Romance) is still very much a work in progress and he looked much better tonight than he did in Saudi Arabia. I think the biggest attribute to him today is that he was going to stay. We were always confident he was going to stay. Stepping up in trip was going to be his forte.”

The Godolphin homebred is out of the winning Street Cry mare Minidress, herself a daughter of dual Group 3 winner Short Skirt. Minidress is a also full sister to recent Group 3 winner Volcanic Sky, winner of the G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan on Feb. 25, 2021 (1 3/4 mile on the turf).
