Champion Goodnight Olive Bounces Back in Bed o’ Roses

Last year's champion female sprinter Goodnight Olive (Ghostzapper), a luckless third as the heavy favorite in the GI Derby City Distaff S. May 6, stayed out of trouble this time and was along in time for a narrow success in Saturday's GII Bed O' Roses S. at Belmont Park.

Drawn on the fence, the 1-4 chalk broke on top and dropped back to caboose the tightly bunched field of five beneath the hot-handed Irad Ortiz, Jr. through an opening quarter in :22.90. Traveling nicely approaching the quarter pole, Goodnight Olive was tipped out and into the clear while four wide off the turn for home and rallied down the center to outbox Wicked Halo (Gun Runner) by a hard-fought neck.

Last year's GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner and GI Ballerina H. heroine kicked off her 5-year-old campaign with a win in Keeneland's GI Madison S. Goodnight Olive never got a chance to run and was defeated by two lengths in her aforementioned attempt on the GI Kentucky Derby undercard.

“I was really proud of her,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “She made multiple moves in the race. I thought each time Irad [Ortiz, Jr.] moved with her and used her, it was with good judgement. He gave her a great ride like he has every time he's ridden her.”

Brown added that Goodnight Olive could potentially stretch out to two turns for the GIII Molly Pitcher S. at Monmouth Park July 22.

Pedigree Notes:

Goodnight Olive, one of 14 top-level winners for Ghostzapper, brought $170,000 as a FTKOCT yearling. Goodnight Olive is one of two winners from three to the races out of dual Grade III winner Salty Strike, who was acquired by the Stonestreet team for $800,000 at the Keeneland January Sale in 2013. A half-sister to the stakes-winning Salty Response (Cozzene) and to the stakes-placed dam of MSP Mohawk Trail (Pioneerof the Nile), Salty Strike is also the dam of the unraced Katie's Keepsake (Medaglia d'Oro), who was sold for $250,000 in foal to Ghostzapper at this year's Keeneland January Sale.

MISCHIEVOUS ANGEL (g, 3, Into Mischief–Sabrina's Angel, by Scat Daddy), the only first-time starter in the field and the 2-1 selection with a $600,000 purchase price, spotted the field a step at the break and had only a single rival behind him through a half mile in :45.26. He began to make up ground as the leaders hit the far turn and tipped out to be five wide with room to run at the top of the stretch. Pacesetter Beer Run (City of Light) gave way as Mischievous Angel closed strongly on the outside and prevailed by three-quarters of the length to graduate on debut. Sabrina's Angel, herself a half-sister to GI Xpressbet Florida Derby winner Audible (Into Mischief), is still to be represented by a 2-year-old Curlin filly and a yearling filly by Practical Joke. Steve Asmussen ‘Sweeps’ 2-Year-Old Stakes With Tremont Win

Steve Asmussen made it a 'sweep' for the 2-year-old stakes wins at Belmont Sunday with a dominating performance by Gold Sweep to not only break his maiden but stamp himself a contender for upcoming summer races. Despite missing by a just a neck when unveiled at Churchill Downs May 18, the son of Speightstown was running late and still earned a 75 Beyer Speed Figure for his losing effort.  Bet down to 4-5 breaking from an outside gate, Gold Sweep came away in good order and raced widest of the three top contenders into the far turn with Vitement (Mizzen Mast) and Ship Cadet to his inside. Up onto even terms with that pair as they swung off the bend, the chestnut surged forward to take command into the final eighth and drew off impressively to the wire to win by nearly double digits.

“At the quarter-pole he was beautiful, and at the three-sixteenths, he switched leads and exploded,” described winning jockey Jose Ortiz. “I showed him the whip a little just to ask him to get away and from that point on I just told him to finish the race. I didn't encourage him a whole lot and he did it pretty easy. For a 2-year-old in his second race and a maiden, I think he's going to be pretty nice.”

A $285,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling, Gold Sweep is his dam's fourth winner from as many to make the races. Second dam Ginger Brew, Canada's champion 3-year-old filly from 2008, also produced GII Demoiselle S. runner up Jamyson 'n Ginger (Bernardini) and is herself a half-sister to MGSW/MGISP Bourbon Bay (Sligo Bay {Ire}). Wonder Brew foaled a Twirling Candy filly this spring. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
