VELVET SISTER (f, 2, Bernardini–Backslash, by Sharp Humor), bought for $500,000 after breezing a :10 1/5 furlong at Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream, debuted a sharp maiden winner Thursday at Belmont for Stonestreet Stables and Steve Asmussen. Showing a quartet of half-mile works at Keeneland, highlighted by a :47 2/5 (5/99) spin from the gate May 8, and a pair of maintenance spins over the local training track, the New York-bred was made a distant 12-5 second choice in a three-horse field behind 1-2 Chad Brown firster Gerrymander (Into Mischief). Out-breaking that rival as remaining foe Amazing Dream (First Samurai) stumbled, the bay dictated terms narrowly while pressed by the favorite through a :22.72 quarter. Gerrymander began to come under more urging nearing the stretch as Joel Rosario sat chilly on the frontrunner, and Velvet Sister shook away outside the furlong grounds, driving clear from there to win wrapped up late by 9 3/4 lengths. Gerrymander, who swapped leads several times in the stretch, was second; Amazing Dream never got involved. The winner is a half-sister to My Boy Tate (Boys At Tosconova), MSW, $584,988. Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Belmont, Monmouth, Woodbine

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing action from Belmont Park, Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey and Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Action commences in Race 7 [4:06 p.m. Eastern] at Belmont Park, when a field of nine older fillies and mares seek a first-level allowance triumph going seven furlongs over the main track. Breaking from the rail, Juddmonte Farms' Entreat makes her first start since a victorious career debut on September 25 at Churchill Downs for trainer Chad Brown. Jeff Drown and Don Rachel's Iaintfraidanoghost cuts back in distance after a four-length victory on February 28 at Aqueduct. Trained by Jeremiah Englehart, the daughter of Ghostzapper scored at fourth asking in a one-turn mile over a muddy and sealed track.

Action shifts to Woodbine Racetrack for the second leg – a 5 ½-furlong maiden optional claiming event over the all-weather surface. Praven Sorenson and Wayne Oliver's Thatsmykindanight seeks a first career win following two runner up finishes as the 2-1 morning line favorite. Carded as Race 7, the second leg of the sequence has a scheduled post time of 4:20 p.m.

The middle leg brings stakes action to the table when Monmouth Park hosts the Grade 3, $150,000 Salvator Mile [Race 10, 4:28 p.m.]. Defending winner Pirate's Punch invades from Kentucky for trainer Grant Forster, making his first start since finishing 12th in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in November at Keeneland. John Fanelli, Cash Is King, LC Racing, Paul Braverman and Team Hanley's Ny Traffic returns to Monmouth Park after a narrow defeat in last year's Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. Trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr., Ny Traffic arrives off his best Beyer Speed Figure yet when garnering a 103 when defeating his New York-bred counterparts by 6 ¾ lengths going seven furlongs at Belmont Park.

Woodbine gets back in on the action in an open maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and upward going one mile over the turf for Race 8 [4:51 p.m.]. Hall of Famer Roger Attfield sends out regally-bred Speightstown Shirl – a daughter of prolific sire Speightstown out of 2011 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl – for her fourth start after finishing second in all three previous efforts. Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber's Astrological, a bay daughter of Malibu Moon and half-sister to 2018 Woodbine Oaks winner Dixie Moon, makes her career debut for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

A field of 11 turf maiden special weight aspirants closes the curtains on the sequence in a 1 1/16-mile event, carded as Race 11 with a 4:58 p.m. post. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will debut Lumino, a son of Medaglia d'Oro out of Exotic Bloom. Owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the 4-year-old dark bay is a half-sibling to 2015 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria and was bought for $2.1 million from the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Pletcher also sends out Jackpot Farm's Freer, who makes his second career start after finishing second on April 24 at Gulfstream Park.

America’s Day At The Races Telecast To Feature Racing From Belmont, Churchill

America's Day at the Races, the acclaimed national telecast produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports, will air 18.5 hours of coverage Thursday through Sunday, with action from Belmont Park and Churchill Downs.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, America's Day at the Races will broadcast live racing action this week, with at least three hours of coverage every day on FOX Sports 2.

FS2: 3 – 8:30 p.m.

Friday, June 11
FS2: 12:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Thursday will feature a nine-race card at Belmont with a first post of 3:05 p.m. Eastern, with FS2 airing from 3-8:30 p.m. Among the highlights from the Elmont, New York-based track will be a 1 1/4-mile inner turf contest for older fillies and mares in Race 7. High Opinion, trained by Tony Dutrow, is the 3-1 morning line favorite, boasting a resume that includes a runner-up finish in the Winter Memories last November at Aqueduct Racetrack.

In Race 8, a seven-furlong optional claiming race on the main track, 2-1 favorite Town Classic will be looking to build off a last-out third-place finish in the Grade 3 Runhappy in May at Belmont Park. The Saffie Joseph, Jr. trainee ran third in the Sir Shackleton in the race prior in March at Gulfstream Park and is 0-2-2 in four stars to commence his 8-year-old campaign.

Thursday's broadcast will also feature the full eight-race card from Churchill, located in Louisville, Kentucky.

Friday's show will air the entire nine-race Belmont card, encompassing a 6 1/2-furlong main track sprint for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in an allowance optional claiming tilt in Race 7. Don't Call Me Mary, conditioned by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, will look to win her second consecutive start and is listed as the 2-1 favorite. The entirety of Churchill's nine-race program will also be shown.

Saturday will see the final two races on the 10-race Belmont card air on America's Day at the Races, while the first five races from Churchill, running its Downs After Dark program, will also be shown.

Temporary Injunction Allows Rice to Resume Training

A New York court has granted Linda Rice a temporary injunction that allows her to resume training while she pursues a legal appeal of the three-year license revocation and $50,000 fine for “improper and corrupt conduct” levied against her by the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC).

The ban went into effect Monday. Later on June 7, Rice's legal team filed a complaint in the Schenectady County Supreme Court alleging that the penalty is “unduly harsh.”

Daily Racing Form first reported the June 9 granting of the injunction. TDN could not reach Rice or her attorney for comment.

Rice had one entry scratched at Finger Lakes Monday because of the ban, but her lone starter Wednesday ran second at that track. She has 10 entrants over the next four days at her Belmont Park base.

Rice's court complaint seeks a declaratory judgment that would either annul or vacate her penalties for receiving race-entry information about rival horses from New York Racing Association employees while paying some racing office workers thousands of dollars in “gifts” between 2011 and 2015.

Culminating an investigation that stretched over five years, NYSGC members voted 5-0 on May 17, to agree with a hearing officer that Rice's years-long pattern of seeking and obtaining pre-entry information from NYRA racing office workers was “intentional, serious and extensive [and] inconsistent with and detrimental to the best interests of horse racing.”

Andrew Turro, Rice's lawyer, told the Form that “We are very happy about today's decision. The court's order restores Ms. Rice's ability to get back to racing and training immediately. We also look forward to challenging the commission's order in the court and ultimately vindicating Ms. Rice's rights.”
