Taiba To Miss Met Mile, Point Towards Del Mar

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said Zedan Racing Stables' MGISW and 'TDN Rising Star' Taiba (Gun Runner) will skip Saturday's GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap, at Belmont Park.

Taiba worked seven-furlongs in 1:27.40 Friday at Santa Anita in what was to be his final prep for the one-turn mile. He has not raced since an eighth-place effort in the G1 Saudi Cup February 25 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse.

“His works have been good, but not like I'd like to see them. I just don't think he's ready for something like that yet,” said Baffert. “I'm going to wait and run him at Del Mar. He's doing well, but not well enough for the Met Mile. To run in the Met Mile, you have to bring your 'A' game and I don't think he's quite there yet.”

“I don't know if he's ready to go a mile against top horses,” Baffert conceded. “He's not quite back to where he was. That's a long way to go to run against Cody's Wish.”

SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, Jay A. Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital and Catherine Donovan's GI Preakness S. winner National Treasure (Quality Road) is slated to breeze Monday in preparation for the GI Belmont S.

Baffert said he is hopeful that National Treasure will appreciate the added ground in the 1 1/2-mile “Test of the Champion.”

“You never know until they do it,” Baffert said. “He handled the Preakness distance and it wasn't a problem for him. We're all in the same boat. None of them probably want to go that far, but if they don't go too fast, they can do it.

“I just want him to show up like he did at Pimlico,” added Baffert. “He's never really run a bad race. All his races have been competitive. He's a pretty consistent horse. He's happy and he'll breeze tomorrow and hopefully everything goes well.”

Zedan Racing Stables' graded-stakes placed Arabian Lion (Justify), a winner of the Sir Barton S. last time out, was initially under consideration for Saturday's Belmont S. but Baffert decided to point him to the GI Woody Stephens instead.

“On the turnback, sometimes they run well. We'll send him back to two turns again after that,” Baffert said.

Tapit Shoes Is Belmont-Bound for Brad Cox

Trainer Brad Cox has added a third GI Belmont S. contender to his lineup with Tapit Shoes, a stakes-placed son of Tapit who was last seen running second to Red Route One (Gun Runner) in the Bath House Row S. at Oaklawn Park on April 22.

“He's a pretty consistent workhorse, steady, and always gallops out well,” Cox said Thursday morning at Churchill Downs. “He gives us some confidence that he could like the mile and a half.”

Owned in partnership by Spendthrift Farm, Steve Landers Racing, Martin Schwartz, Michael Dubb, Ten Strike Racing, Jim Bakke, Titletown Racing, Kueber Racing, Big Easy Racing, Winners Win and Michael Caruso, the $300,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling purchase is a half-brother to GISW Cyberknife (Gun Runner).

Tapit Shoes broke his maiden by seven and a half lengths at Fair Grounds last December. This year, he ran fourth and then third against allowance company before his second-place finish in the Bath House Row S.

“He seems to be getting better with the more he does,” said Cox. “He took a move forward  in the Bath House Row S. and he's had plenty of time to recover from that. I think he obviously has to take another move forward and I'm hoping that he will.”

Cox's Belmont trio of Tapit Shoes, Angel of Empire (Classic Empire) and Hit Show (Candy Ride {Arg}) are all set to work at Churchill Downs over the weekend before shipping to Belmont on Monday evening.

Vino Rosso’s The Wine Steward Impresses On Debut At Belmont

1st-Belmont, $75,000, (S), Msw, 5-28, 2yo, 5f, :58.68, ft, 6 lengths.
THE WINE STEWARD (c, 2, Vino Rosso–Call to Service, by To Honor and Serve) brought a final bid of $340,000 from trainer Michael Maker at OBS March earlier this year after breezing in :10.2 to be the second-highest progeny of his freshman sire (by Curlin) at the sale. A popular choice at the window, the bay drew the inside gate at post-time odds of 2-5 and, despite a hesitant beginning, stayed in contention with a rail-skimming ride around the far turn. As space opened up, he darted through an opening past the quarter pole, drew past pacesetter Khadullah (Mission Impazible), and was kept to task into the final sixteenth before easing up close to home for the six-length win. Khadullah was another 3 3/4 lengths clear for second. The first foal out of a half-sister to MGSW Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}), GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile third Giant Game (Giant's Causeway) and GISP Gio Game (Gio Ponti), The Wine Steward now has a yearling half-brother from the first crop of GI Kentucky Derby winner Authentic and a newborn half-sister by Curlin. Spendthrift's Vino Rosso now stands at two winners from his first crop. Sales History: $70,000 Ylg '22 SARAUG; $340,000 2yo '23 OBSMAR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $41,250.
