America’s Day At The Races To Feature Coverage Of Belmont, Churchill Downs

America's Day at the Races, the acclaimed national telecast produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports, will air 21.5 hours of coverage Thursday through Sunday, featuring graded stakes action from Belmont Park and Closing Day at Churchill Downs.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, America's Day at the Races will broadcast at least 4.5 hours of live racing coverage every day on FS2.

Saturday's broadcast will feature five graded stakes in total, including the Grade 2, $250,000 Mother Goose, a 1 1/16-miles test for sophomore fillies at Belmont that will see the undefeated Three Chimneys homebred Always Carina, conditioned by four-time Eclipse Award-winner Chad Brown, making her stakes debut against a compact field of five led by Stonestreet Stables' graded stakes winner Clairiere for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. The one-turn test is carded as Race 8 with a post-time of 4:40 p.m. on Belmont's 10-race slate.

Also featured on Saturday's Belmont card is the $100,000 Wild Applause, a one-mile Widener turf test for sophomore fillies. Wertheimer and Frere's Grade 1-placed Alda will be in search of her third career stakes score for trainer Graham Motion as she takes on a talented nine-horse field that will feature two contenders each from Brown [Minaun, Nevisian Sunrise], Christophe Clement [Bye Bye, Bubbles On Ice] and Hall of Famer Bill Mott [Lovestruck, Alwayz Late.]

A quartet of graded stakes from Churchill's loaded Saturday card includes the Grade 2, $300,000 Fleur de Lis [Race 5, 2:45 p.m.] for older fillies and mares led by multiple Grade 1-winner Letruska; the Grade 3, $150,000 Bashford Manor [Race 9, 4:55 p.m.], a six-furlong sprint featuring a field of 11 juveniles; the Grade 2, $300,000 Wise Dan [Race 10, 5:26 p.m.], a 1 1/16-mile turf test for older horses topped by multiple graded stakes winning New York-bred Somelikeithotbrown; and the Grade 2, $600,000 Stephen Foster [Race 11, 5:59 p.m.] at nine furlongs for older horses led by Godolphin homebred Maxfield.

America's Day at the Races is also broadcast on NYRA's YouTube channel which boasts more than 70,000 subscribers. Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Includes Races From Belmont, Thistle, Churchill

The New York Racing Association Inc. [NYRA] will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring stakes action from Belmont Park, Thistledown and Churchill Downs.

The sequence kicks off in Race 9 at Churchill Downs at 4:55 p.m. with a field of 11 juveniles sprinting six furlongs on the main track. Double Thunder, trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, boasts the field's highest Beyer Speed Figure garnering a 60 when sprinting to a debut win on June 5 at Monmouth Park. Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen will saddle a pair of contenders led by maiden winner Red Run and maiden Vodka N Water.

Action switches to Thistledown for the second leg as 11 sophomores do battle in the nine-furlong Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby [Race 9, 5:04 p.m.] The Pletcher-trained Promise Keeper, last out winner of the Grade 3 Peter Pan at Belmont, is listed as the 7-2 morning-line favorite. The experienced Keepmeinmind, trained by Robertino Diodoro, competed in two legs of the Triple Crown, closing to finish seventh in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby and fourth in the Grade 2 Preakness.

The middle leg will offer the $100,000 Wild Applause [Race 9, 5:12 p.m.], a one-mile Widener turf test for sophomore fillies from Belmont. Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown will saddle a formidable pair in Group 3-winner Minaun and the improving Nevisian Sunrise. Offering steep opposition are the Grade 1-place Alda for trainer Graham Motion and the regally-bred Lovestruck, a half-sister to Scat Daddy, for Hall of Famer Bill Mott.

The final two legs of the sequence will come from the Closing Day card at Churchill Downs beginning with the Grade 2, $300,000 Wise Dan [Race 10, 5:26 p.m.], a 1 1/16-mile turf test for older horses led by the multiple graded stakes winning New York-bred Somelikeithotbrown for trainer Mike Maker. Hall of Famer Mark Casse will send out eight-time winner Ride a Comet in search of a fourth graded-stakes score.

Closing out the sequence is the nine-furlong Grade 2, $600,000 Stephen Foster [Race 11, 5:59 p.m.] for older horses at Churchill Downs. A talented field of nine is led by Godolphin homebred Maxfield, a multiple graded stakes winner who boasts six wins from seven starts.

Mother-To-Be Oleksandra Beats The Boys In Poker Stakes

On Father's Day, it was the mother-to-be who brought home the victory for Team Valor International. Oleksandra (AUS), the lone mare in the field of nine, won the one-mile Grade 3 Poker Stakes by a neck over favored Raging Bull in Sunday's feature on the turf at Belmont Park, Elmont, Ny.

In her fourth start of 2021, Oleksandra, who is currently in foal to Into Mischief, broke a step slow from the gate, bumping into favorite Raging Bull, and was last for the first six furlongs of the one-mile Poker. Jockey Joel Rosario did not panic, though, content to let his mount run at the back of the pack and allow the race to develop in front of them. Get Smokin, winner of the Seek Again Stakes in his previous start, took the lead within the first furlong, with Raased and Tell Your Daddy running close behind, and he held onto that advantage until the final turn.

Favorite Raging Bull found himself boxed in for much of the race, but, as the field entered the stretch, he made his move on the rail, just to the inside of Get Smokin. At the back of the field on that last turn, Rosario took Oleksandra to the outside, moving down the center of the course as Raging Bull began to overtake Get Smokin. Raging Bull got to the lead in that last furlong, but Oleksandra moved past him, taking over first place and determinedly holding off Raging Bull to win the G3 Poker by a head. The final time for the mile was 1:32.11.

Behind Oleksandra and Raging Bull came Front Run the Fed, Sanctuary City, Get Smokin, Penalty, Tell Your Daddy, Raased, and Veronesi.

Oleksandra paid $36.80, $7.30, and $5.40. Raging Bull paid $2.60 and $2.10. Front Run the Fed paid $3.00 to show.

Trainer Neil Drysdale was pleased with Oleksandra's career finale. “Things haven't gone exactly smooth this year for her. We ran in Kentucky and realized she doesn't like the soft going. So, then we decided not to run here [in the Jaipur] because it was raining a lot here too at the time. Since she's more relaxed this year, we decided to try her at a mile hoping she could get the distance, and she did. She's pregnant [in foal to Into Mischief], so this was her swan song. She'll go out on a high note.”

Joel Rosario was not deterred by that slow start. “She always comes out of there like that [slow] but then she can be a little aggressive after. She relaxed very nicely. Neil Drysdale is a tremendous trainer.”

Foaled in Australia, Oleksandra is a daughter of 2011 Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom out of the Caesour mare Alexandra Rose. Bred by her owner Team Valor, this 6-year-old mare was a $1.45 million RNA at the November 2020 Keeneland Breeding Stock sale. This victory in the G3 Poker Stakes is her first win of 2021 and her eighth career victory in 20 starts for career winnings of $705,748.

Cross Country Pick 5 Pays Big On Saturday

Saturday's Cross Country Pick 5 featuring racing from Belmont Park in Elmont, Ny. and Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., paid $37,936 for selecting all five winners for the 50-cent wager. The total pool was $89,270.

Churchill commenced the action when Exult rallied from eighth to win a starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up going one mile on the turf in Race 6. Exult, trained by Rodolphe Brisset and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, was fifth in the stretch before turning it on to post a 1 3/4-length victory with a final time of 1:35.33, returning $8.80 on a $2 win wager.

Belmont was the site of the sequence's first stakes, as Sport Model won the $150,000 New York Stallion Stakes Series Cupecoy's Joy for eligible state-sired 3-year-old fillies going seven furlongs on the Widener turf course in Race 6. The Christophe Clement-trained Sport Model, under jockey Luis Saez, outkicked Funwhileitlasted by a half-length, completing the course in 1:21.16. Sport Model paid $14.80.

The action stayed at Belmont for Race 8, as My First Grammy edged Top Gun Tommy by a neck to win a starter allowance going a one-turn mile on Big Sandy in Race 8. My First Grammy, conditioned by Oscar Barrera, was piloted by Manny Franco, hitting the wire in 1:36.78. Off at 9-1, My First Grammy returned $20.20.

Witez bested Take Charge Ro by three-quarters of a length in Churchill's Race 9, winning at 13-1 in paying $29.60 for the sequence's biggest upset. The Ian Wilkes trainee completed the 1 1/8-mile turf course in 1:48.43 under Chris Landeros, topping a 10-horse field of fillies and mares 3-years-old and up in an allowance optional claimer.

The $150,000 NYSSS Spectacular Bid in Belmont's Race 9 concluded the Cross Country Pick 5, with Ocala Dream repelling the favorite Step Dancer's late charge to win the seven-furlong Widener turf contest for 3-year-olds by one length. Trained by Tom Morley, Ocala Dream, ridden by Junior Alvarado, notched a final time of 1:21.20 and paid $8.40.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on track, on ADW platforms, and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.
