PUMPKIN SCONE (Into Mischief), a $1.25-million Keeneland September Yearling purchase by Spendthrift Farm, debuts for Brad Cox from the outside gate on Sunday. Bred in Kentucky by the China Horse Club, the bay filly is out of Embellish the Lace (Super Saver), who has also produced three-time winner and fellow $1.25-million KEESEP graduate Tap the Faith (Tapit). Pumpkin Scone hails from a female family which includes GI Travers S. hero Afleet Express (Afleet Alex) and MGISP My Miss Sophia (Unbridled's Song), the dam of GISW Annapolis (War Front). She will face a pair of debuting homebreds in Juddmonte's Call Again (Arrogate) and Winchell Thoroughbreds's Absinthe (Gun Runner). TJCIS PPS

A 2-year-old maiden special weight for New York-breds kicks off Belmont's Sunday card. Trained by Mike Maker, the rail-drawn THE WINE STEWARD (Vino Rosso) hails from the first crop of Vino Rosso, who is represented by one winner from five starters. The $340,000 OBS March buy's dam Call to Service (To Honor and Serve) counts MGSW Isotherm (Lonhro {Aus}) as a half-brother and the unraced half-sister Adande (Bwana Charlie), who is responsible for GSW Skelly (Practical Joke). Secret Oath Headed To Ogden Phipps

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas has not won the GI Ogden Phipps S. since 1996, the year the legendary Serena's Song (Rahy) got the job done when the race was contested as the Hempstead H. The 87-year-old will hope that streak comes to an end when he saddles 2022 GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Oath (Arrogate) in this year's Phipps, one of nine elite-level races slated to take place during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival. The winner earns a spot in the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff this November at Santa Anita.

Very impressive in defeating Clairiere (Curlin) in the GII Azeri S. first off a November layoff this past March, Secret Oath dropped a heartbreaker to that Stonestreet Stables colorbearer in the GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 15. The chestnut was unlucky yet again when going down by a head to horse for the course Played Hard (Tapit) in the GI La Troienne S. at Churchill Downs May 5.

“[Jockey] Tyler [Gaffalione] was still learning a little bit about her and he made his move a little too quick,” Lukas said. “He made a big move around the turn. We'd like to have both of those back, but we're in pretty good shape going into this race. She's bigger, stronger and doing well.”

Secret Oath ships to Belmont June 6, Lukas said.

Doppelganger On Target For Met Mile

Doppelganger (Into Mischief), last seen recording a 17-1 upset over Repo Rocks (Tapiture) in the GI Carter H. at Aqueduct Apr. 8, remains on target for a rematch with that foe in the GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. at Belmont Park June 10.

The $570,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase purchase has registered his three most recent works over the Laurel main track, including a best-of-12 five furlongs that was timed in 1:01.60 May 24.

“Since the Carter, he's quite sharp,” trainer Brittany Russell said. “He thinks he's a bear. Each race, each win, he seems to get higher on himself.”

Though Russell says that connections contemplated a start in the GIII Pimlico Special S. going a mile and three-sixteenths, the decision has been made to continue to race the colt over shorter trips.

“We were thinking Special, but if we want[ed] Special we were going to kill the idea of the Met Mile. If he's a Grade I horse and he's going to be a better miler, that's the way we've got to go,” she said. “We need to pick a path and stay with it and we feel like one turn right now is probably the best way to go. Yes, it's going to be tough up there but as good as he's doing, we're going to take a big swing.”

Fired NY Vet Hit with $8K Fine For Latest Lasix Mix-Up

The veterinarian deemed responsible for causing a six-horse field to scratch down to two runners by failing to administer Lasix to four horses at Belmont Park last week has been fined $8,000 by the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC).

The May 25 ruling stated that Dr. Steven Lascher failed “to follow proper Lasix procedures” in the third race on May 19.

A New York Racing Association (NYRA) spokesperson had told TDN in the initial aftermath of the unintended match race that Lascher was “no longer employed by NYRA.”

It was unclear at deadline for this story if Lascher planned on lodging an appeal.

In a similar incident, Lascher was fined $4,000 for failing to administer Lasix to four horses at Belmont on June 9, 2022, which also contributed to scratches that caused a two-horse race (although three other scratches from that race were not related to the Lasix mix-up).

Lascher's first fine of $1,000 per scratched horse from the 2022 incident was doubled to $2,000 per scratched horse for the latest error.
