Sadie Lady Sails To Easy Win In Dancin Renee Stakes

Saturday's featured race at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. was one for the Ladies, with Sadie Lady at 7-5 surging to the front and outkicking 6-5 favorite Fierce Lady in a gate-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Dancin Renee Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares 4-years-old and up contesting at six furlongs.

The eighth edition of the Dancin Renee saw Dennis Narlinger's Sadie Lady, ridden by Jose Ortiz, break sharp and go to the front, leading the five-horse field through the opening quarter-mile in 22.79 seconds and the half-mile in 45.61 on the fast main track.

Sadie Lady was challenged in the stretch by Fierce Lady, but had enough in reserve to win for the third time in four starts, completing the sprint in 1:11.05 for trainer Rob Atras.

Ortiz, who notched his third win on the card, rode Sadie Lady for the first time and earned his third victory in the Dancin Renee [Clear Pasaj in 2013 and La Verdad in 2015].

“When we passed the half-mile pole, she switched to her left lead and she kind of went on her own,” Ortiz said. “I knew I had enough room to wait, but she went on her own. It was hard to take that momentum away from her. I just let her do her thing and use her speed and she used it well. I was happy with how she carried on. She ran a very good race. Her speed is her weapon.”

The Freud mare won for the second time in three starts to commence her 5-year-old campaign. She bested Call On Mischief by a head in the Correction going the Dancin Renee distance in her seasonal bow in March at Aqueduct and followed with a runner-up effort last out in the Grade 3 Vagrancy Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs last month at Belmont.

Sadie Lady, running back in a restricted stakes, posted her first victory at Belmont since winning her career debut in September 2018.

“I know she's very fast and she's actually cleared quite easily in her other races,” Atras said. “I was a little concerned that Ruvies in Time might challenge us out of the gate, but she [Sadie Lady] broke so sharp and Jose just let her roll out of there and everything went to plan.”

Sadie Lady, bred by JMJ Racing Stables, improved her career earnings to $406,232. She returned $4.90 on a $2 win wager.

“She's a really cool filly and likes to win,” Atras said. “She's not easy in the morning and the exercise rider does a really good job with her.”

Fierce Lady, owned by Nice Guys Stables and Steve Hornstock, earned a placing in her first stakes appearance since January 2020, besting Ruvies in Time by a half-length for second. The Brittany Russell trainee, bred by Sugar Maple Farm, returned from a nearly six-month layoff to win against optional claimers last out in May at Belmont and recorded her best stakes performance since running second in the 2019 Joseph A. Gimma Stakes.

“I thought there would be more pace. The plan was to come flying at the end, but the winner went to the lead and had it easy,” said Fierce Lady jockey Luis Saez.

Espresso Shot and Eloquent Speaker completed the order of finish. Good Credence scratched.

Curlin Colt Turns In ‘Jazzy’ Effort at Belmont

2nd-Belmont, $90,000, Msw, 6-12, 3yo/up, 1m, 1:36.94, ft, 2 1/4 lengths.
MILES D (c, 3, Curlin–Sound the Trumpets, by Bernardini) made a single visit to the races last season, a well-bet and close-up fourth at Aqueduct Oct. 11, in an event that has turned out to be no ordinary maiden. Next-out 'TDN Rising Star' and Smarty Jones S. winner Caddo River (Hard Spun) was runner-up to Godophin's Speaker's Corner (Street Sense) and a half-length better than Greatest Honour (Tapit), who would go on to annex the GIII Holy Bull S. and GII Fountain of Youth S. ahead of a third in the GI Curlin Florida Derby. Behind Miles D that day were the sixth-placed Bourbonic (Bernardini), this year's GII Wood Memorial S. upsetter, as well as Original (Quality Road), last of the octet, but since Grade III-placed on the turf. The late money came for Miles D, who was sent off the 1.15-1 chalk in advance of 8-5 fellow second-timer Southern Flag (Union Rags), and proved spot on. Settled back on the fence as Absolute Courage (Into Mischief) set the pace from off the rail, Miles D was asked to come after that one at the quarter pole, stuck a neck in front a furlong from home and kicked on nicely to take it by 2 1/4 lengths. Absolute Courage boxed on gamely at the rail to claim second spot, a head better than Southern Courage, who was slowly into stride, raced three and four wide the trip and was forced to settle for third. Miles D is the first foal for his unraced dam, a half-sister to champion Storm Flag Flying (Storm Cat) who was purchased with this colt in utero for $675,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November Sale. Sound the Trumpets's 2-year-old son Trumpets Blare (Pioneerof the Nile) breezed three-eighths of a mile in :37.40 at the Skylight Training CenterSaturday morning and her most recent produce include a yearling Quality Road filly and a colt foal by Medaglia d'Oro. Miles D's third dam was the irrepressible Personal Ensign (Private Account), who was also responsible for Grade I winners Miner's Mark (Mr. Prospector) and Traditionally (Mr. Prospector) as well as MGSP Salute (Unbridled), whose produce include Lane's End stallion and GISW Mr Speaker (Pulpit), GSW Fire Away (War Front) and SW/GSP Vigilantes Way (Medaglia d'Oro). Belmont: Friday’s Card Features Double Pick 6 Carryover Of $260,473

Friday's Pick 6 will be boosted by a $260,473 carryover as the multi-race wager went unsolved for a second consecutive race day on Thursday at Belmont Park.

The $1 Pick 6, implemented at the current 48-day Belmont spring/summer meet, returned $1,479 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

Thursday's sequence kicked off with Dancingwthdaffodls [No. 3, $36.80] prevailing as the longest shot on the board in Race 4 with Jose Lezcano up for trainer Eduardo Jones.

Eric Cancel guided Ninth Hour [No. 6, $9.20] to victory for trainer Chris Englehart in Race 5, a six-furlong claiming sprint. The Last Zip [No. 12, $12.20], with Luis Saez up for Mike Maker, secured the win in Race 6 in a Widener turf route.

Higher Truth [No. 9, $8.50] rallied to win a 10-furlong inner turf test in Race 7 under Jose Ortiz for four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown.

In Race 8, Lezcano returned to the winner's circle aboard Jalen Journey [No. 5, $5.40], who left the gate as the mutuel favorite for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen in the seven-furlong optional-claiming sprint.

In the finale, Chulainn [No. 1, $19.60] secured the carryover as one of only five horses not covered in the loaded 11-horse field. Graham Motion trained the winner of the one-mile maiden claiming tilt over the Widener turf as Chulainn, with Manny Franco up, prevailed by a nose over Voliero [No. 2], who would have returned a $1 Pick 6 payout in excess of $130K to two tickets had he won.

Featuring a $1 bet minimum and 15 percent takeout, the Pick 6 wager requires bettors to select the first-place finisher of six designated races on the card. A total of 75 percent of the full pool, minus takeout, will be distributed to bettors who select the first-place finisher of all six races. A consolation payout of 25 percent of the net pool will be distributed to tickets selecting 5-of-6 winners.

In the event there are no tickets with six winners, there will be a carryover of 75 percent of the net pool into the next day of the meet with the remaining 25 percent of the net pool distributed as a consolation payout to tickets selecting the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races on the card. On carryover days, the Pick 6 is offered with a 24 percent takeout.

The $1 Pick 6 replaced the Empire 6, a jackpot style wager featuring a $0.20 bet minimum first offered in August 2019 at Saratoga Race Course.

Friday's $1 Pick 6 kicks off in Race 4 at 2:31 p.m. Eastern and will include four turf races topped by a 10-furlong $92,000 inner turf allowance in Race 8 featuring Shamrocket, the 8-5 morning-line favorite exiting a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Man o' War. First post on Friday's nine-race card is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Features Action From Belmont, Monmouth, Woodbine

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will host a Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing action from Belmont Park, Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey and Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Action commences in Race 7 [4:06 p.m. Eastern] at Belmont Park, when a field of nine older fillies and mares seek a first-level allowance triumph going seven furlongs over the main track. Breaking from the rail, Juddmonte Farms' Entreat makes her first start since a victorious career debut on September 25 at Churchill Downs for trainer Chad Brown. Jeff Drown and Don Rachel's Iaintfraidanoghost cuts back in distance after a four-length victory on February 28 at Aqueduct. Trained by Jeremiah Englehart, the daughter of Ghostzapper scored at fourth asking in a one-turn mile over a muddy and sealed track.

Action shifts to Woodbine Racetrack for the second leg – a 5 ½-furlong maiden optional claiming event over the all-weather surface. Praven Sorenson and Wayne Oliver's Thatsmykindanight seeks a first career win following two runner up finishes as the 2-1 morning line favorite. Carded as Race 7, the second leg of the sequence has a scheduled post time of 4:20 p.m.

The middle leg brings stakes action to the table when Monmouth Park hosts the Grade 3, $150,000 Salvator Mile [Race 10, 4:28 p.m.]. Defending winner Pirate's Punch invades from Kentucky for trainer Grant Forster, making his first start since finishing 12th in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in November at Keeneland. John Fanelli, Cash Is King, LC Racing, Paul Braverman and Team Hanley's Ny Traffic returns to Monmouth Park after a narrow defeat in last year's Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. Trained by Saffie Joseph, Jr., Ny Traffic arrives off his best Beyer Speed Figure yet when garnering a 103 when defeating his New York-bred counterparts by 6 ¾ lengths going seven furlongs at Belmont Park.

Woodbine gets back in on the action in an open maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and upward going one mile over the turf for Race 8 [4:51 p.m.]. Hall of Famer Roger Attfield sends out regally-bred Speightstown Shirl – a daughter of prolific sire Speightstown out of 2011 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl – for her fourth start after finishing second in all three previous efforts. Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber's Astrological, a bay daughter of Malibu Moon and half-sister to 2018 Woodbine Oaks winner Dixie Moon, makes her career debut for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

A field of 11 turf maiden special weight aspirants closes the curtains on the sequence in a 1 1/16-mile event, carded as Race 11 with a 4:58 p.m. post. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will debut Lumino, a son of Medaglia d'Oro out of Exotic Bloom. Owned by Phoenix Thoroughbreds, the 4-year-old dark bay is a half-sibling to 2015 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria and was bought for $2.1 million from the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Pletcher also sends out Jackpot Farm's Freer, who makes his second career start after finishing second on April 24 at Gulfstream Park.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country.
