Sconsin, Bell’s The One Among Salty Cast For Saturday’s Roxelana Stakes

Lloyd Madison Farm's multiple graded stakes winning filly Sconsin headlines a field of six fillies and mares that were entered in Saturday's $110,000 Roxelana Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs.

The 6 ½-furlong Roxelana will go as Race 10 of 11 with a post time of 5:26 p.m. (all times Eastern). First post is 12:45 p.m.

Sconsin, a 4-year-old homebred daughter of Include, won the $150,000 Winning Colors (Grade 3) four weeks ago beneath the Twin Spires. The Greg Foley-trainee finished second behind Gamine in the $500,000 Derby City Distaff (G1) on the undercard of the Kentucky Derby. Overall, Sconsin sports a stout record of 12-4-3-1 with purse earnings of $546,512.

Current Churchill Downs leading rider Tyler Gaffalione has the return mount and will break from post No. 5.

Also entered in the Roxelana is Lothenbach Stables 2020 Derby City Distaff (G1) winner Bell's the One. Trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One is searching for her first victory in her 5-year-old campaign. She finished second behind Kimari in the $300,000 Madison (G1) in early April and fourth in this year's Derby City Distaff.

Corey Lanerie has the mount from post 4.

Another accomplished mare that was entered in the Roxelana is Whitham Thoroughbreds' multiple Grade 3 winner Four Graces. Trained by Ian Wilkes, Four Graces recorded four victories through seven starts as a 3-year-old. The now 4-year-old daughter of Majesticperfection will make her seasonal debut from post 3 with Julien Leparoux in the saddle. Four Graces defeated Sconsin by 4 ¾ lengths in last year's $100,000 Beaumont (G3) at Keeneland.

The complete field for the Roxelana from the rail out (with jockey and trainer):

  1. Shesomajestic (Joe Talamo, Michelle Nihei)
  2. Miss Mosaic (Colby Hernandez, Ben Colebrook)
  3. Four Graces (Leparoux, Wilkes)
  4. Bell's the One (Lanerie, Pessin)
  5. Sconsin (Gaffalione, Foley)
  6. Jungle Juice (IRE) (Adam Beschizza, Anna Meah)

Wagering is available online at www.TwinSpires.com, the official ADW of Churchill Downs Incorporated.

Fans can catch the Roxelana, along with the entire 11-race program, on “America's Day at the Races.” The action is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. on Fox Sports 2.

Tickets are available for Saturday at Churchill Downs on www.churchilldowns.com/tickets. Admission gates are scheduled to open at 11:30 a.m. and “Churchill Downs Today” will air at 11:45 a.m. throughout the facility and on www.TwinSpires.com.

Fasig-Tipton July Catalog Now Online

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged a total of 348 yearlings for The July Sale, to be held at the auction house's Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Kentucky, in a single session Tuesday, July 13. The catalog is available for viewing online.

The front cover for the 2021 edition, which is back in its normal position on the calendar after being pushed back to September last year, is adorned with Grade I graduates of The July Sale, including Derby City Distaff heroine Bell's The One (Majesticperfection), recent GI Madison S. winner Kimari (Munnings) and Speech (Mr Speaker), victorious in the 2020 GI Ashland S. Five graded stakes winners from this season appara on the back cover, including Chess's Dream (Jess's Dream), Leinster (Majestic Warrior) and Mighty Mischief (Into Mischief). Just this past weekend, $55,000 July grad Lone Rock (Majestic Warrior) led home a Fasig-Tipton sourced trifecta in the GII Brooklyn S. on the GI Belmont S. undercard.

“Fasig-Tipton selected yearling sales return to their traditional spots on the calendar in 2021, starting with a strong renewal of The July Sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The sale will begin with the Freshman Sire Showcase–a long-time element of the July Sale that we are reintroducing this year–which will offer the first yearlings by 2021's exciting group of freshman sires. The sale will then transition into the more proven, sire-heavy part of the catalogue. Overall, our 'proven' sire-power has increased again this year.”

Fasig-Tipton is also accepting nominations for the July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale, which takes place Monday, July 12. Nominations will remain open right up until sale time, but entries are recommended prior to June 18.

“The market for racehorses is very strong right now, and the sale's placement ahead of the lucrative summer race meets make this auction immensely popular with buyers,” Browning noted.

The catalog will also be available via the Equineline catalog app. Print copies will be available beginning June 14.

Gamine Looks Long Gone in Derby City Distaff

'TDN Rising Star' Gamine (Into Mischief) is the 1-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday's GI Derby City (ex Humana) Distaff, and, facing just five other rivals that lack anything near her front-running prowess, she could go off an even shorter proposition than that.

Now six-for-seven lifetime as her once-disputed Oaklawn allowance victory has now been reinstated, Gamine was other-worldly at trips around one turn during her championship season in 2020, winning the one-mile GI Longines Acorn S. by 18 3/4 lengths last June and the seven-furlong GI Longines Test S. by seven lengths in August. The $220,000 KEESEP yearling, who topped the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds in training sale at $1.8 million, simply did not stay the nine furlongs of the GI Kentucky Oaks, finishing third (subsequently disqualified) to Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil) and Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil), but she righted the ship in no uncertain terms, besting the fleet Serengeti Empress (Alternation) by 6 1/4 lengths in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Nov. 7. The champion female sprinter galloped around on a loose lead when supplemented to the GIII Las Flores S. at Santa Anita Apr. 4, and Saturday's race could play out identically.

Bell's the One (Majesticperfection) is the defending champ of the Derby City Distaff, a race that marked her first career top-level success. The seven-furlong specialist, also winner of the GII Lexus Raven Run S. at three, outbobbed Serengeti Empress to win this last year, then ran with credit to be third, beaten a nose for second, in the Filly and Mare Sprint. At her best when there is a good pace ahead of her, the bay dead-heated for second with Estilo Talentoso (Maclean's Music) in the GI Madison S. at Keeneland Apr. 3, as the victorious Kimari (Munnings) raced closer to a moderate pace and held sway late.

Sconsin (Include) earned her way into the F/M Sprint courtesy of an off-the-pace success in the GII Eight Belles S. on Oaks day last year. Fourth at Keeneland in November, she exits a seventh in the Madison.

Champion Gamine Headlines Derby City Distaff

Michael Lund Petersen's champion Gamine tops a field of six fillies and mares for the 35th running of the $500,000 Derby City Distaff presented by Kendall-Jackson Winery (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Gamine has won six of her seven career starts and capped off her championship campaign with a track record-setting romp in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Keeneland in November.

Gamine opened 2021 with a five-length victory in the Las Flores (G3) April 4 at Santa Anita. John Velazquez has the mount Saturday leaving post four.

Her top challenger figures to be Bell's the One who is seeking to become the first repeat winner of the race.

Owned by Lothenbach Stables and trained by Neil Pessin, Bell's the One has compiled a 4-2-2-0 record at Churchill Downs. Regular rider Corey Lanerie has the mount and will exit post three.
